in both cases there's two very distinct parts of the "fanbases", of which one is terribly cancerous and the other is alright.
With DG there's a very clear divide between memeloving fucks and actual fans. The thing is that the actual fans don't have the pressing need to discuss the band because they consider them to be just another good band. The memeloving fucks however, whose first DG album was no doubt jenny death, have the need to incessantly type out lyrics of the songs to other "unenlightened" friends to make them ask what they're talking about, and tagging eachother feverishly whenever the DG facebook page makes a new post. They probably don't even like the music as much as the fact that it's "a black guy screaming lol have you seen the video where he looks into the camera laughing like a maniac wait let me link it to you :ppp"
in Grimes' case you have the girls and gay guys who worship her persona but not the musician, these are the people who will agree with claire that AA is her best album "because it's just a woman who is free to do what she wants and that's great" but whose previous exposure to her is limited to the videoclips for oblivion and genesis, while there's an actual fanbase of people who knew about 4ad before she joined it and probably don't even care much about what colour her hair was last week

I agree with your DG description. A lot of /mu/tants feel the need to meme out with lyrics and what is the 'best album' without taking into account their own personal taste. DG constantly changes their style in every album, so when discussions arise, its more about "who shares my one-sided opinion" and "if you don't agree, you're not a DG fan." And its not even just DG, I'm a big Radiohead fan and I seriously get sick when I read some of the threads on this board.

I brought a fan of Death Grips to game night once as a favor to his brother. Apparently he had expressed interest in getting into tabletop.
He wouldn't shut up about them, that's how I determined he was a fan.
