He's an individual that put out music that a shitload of people really liked, so he became rich, famous and respected. Same as every other well known musician. Why was his music so popular? Probably because of a combination of the production and style being a real fuckin awesome combination of hip hop and synth funk which was a new groundbreaking thing for the mainstream, combined with the personality and style of his delivery and voice and the subject matter of the songs which appealed to people because of it's over the top profanity and gangsterness. He might not be a lyrical genius but he has/had personality and delivery in spades and a knack for being able to read the public and figure out what makes bit hits
