CLT tried to help /mu/ by cucking them into getting a musical education, while you can't even keep your cool talking to someone who opposes you
>>
>>65832933
This.

People always cry "branch out from /mu/core you pleb" all the time. But people only say that to people who happen to have /mu/core favourite albums.

It's a redundant statement. /mu/core is a limited amount of albums, and providing they continue to listen to new music (which pretty much everyone on this thread does), then of course they will eventually listen to non-/mu/core stuff.

And just because they prefer a lot of /mu/core to non-/mu/core, doesn't really mean or say anything.

There's a reason why /mu/core became /mu/core and that was because they were widely considered to be the best of the best.

There's a difference between /mu/core and an album that is purely a meme e.g. Blurryface. And the difference is the consensual love.

Is it wrong if you've never listened to any of the entry-level artists any genre wise but are listening to newer stuff and something people would consider either "more complex" or "avant-garde"?

For example, I never listened to Mozart, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, the list goes on... but I listen to Morton Feldman, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Horatiu Radulescu, Igor Stravinsky, etc.

Am I missing out? Or is it good to skip all the entry-level things because they're outdated and simple compared to newer artists?

This.

Why start listening to a bunch of obscure random Jazz artists just to be cool on /mu/ if you've never listened to Davis or Coltrane?

They aren't entry-level because they are worse or simpler, they're entry-level because they're celebrated and revered to the point they're unignorable in their respective genre.

They also usually influenced all the little obscure ones that came after.
>>
>>65833235
The point about them was that you don't need music theory in reviews, that it's unnecessary and unwieldy.
Of course his idea of music theory was an obsession with the "compositions" of pop songs, so of course it's irrelevant in that context.

>>
On March 18, The Daily Beast ran an article by Ted Gioia bemoaning the lack of music theory and technical knowledge that appears in music criticism these days. Of the many responses (including Mike Powell's on the Pitch) is this new one, by Owen Pallett, published today on Slate.
In response to Gioia, Pallett "explains the genius of Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream' using music theory"—analyzing the chords, keys, time signatures, suspension, syncopation, and melody lines, in order to unpack its "enormous chart success". "My bet is that it’ll be boring," he writes at the outset, "but I'm going to do my best not to bore you!"

Pallett approaches his topic in several ways. "Her voice is the sun and the song is in orbit around it," he writes at one point. Pallett's introduction reads:

I have picked Katy Perry's “Teenage Dream.” Because: this song's success seems to mystify all the Katy Perry haters in the world. Why did it go to No. 1? Let’s start by talking about the ingenuity of the harmonic content. This song is all about suspension—not in the voice-leading 4–3 sense, but in the emotional sense, which listeners often associate with “exhilaration,” being on the road, being on a roller coaster, travel. This sense of suspension is created simply, by denying the listener any I chords. There is not a single I chord in the song. Laymen, the I chord (“one chord”) is the chord that the key is in. That is, the song is in G but there are no G-chords. Other examples of this, in hit singles: Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” and Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better With You”; almost-examples include Earth Wind and Fire's “In September” which has an I chord but only passing and in inversion; same with Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida.”

For comparison's sake, Pallett describes the off-beat notes of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid". He also mentions the way Dev Hynes of Blood Oranges weighs syllables, with no syncopation, to produce songs that "sound like hymns."

not everything worthwhile in music sounds "naturally" good (to a 21st century pop listener) until you become sensitive to it, just like pop songs don't sound "naturally" good to everyone that hears them

like lots of people who are used to more intricate composition hear hammering four chord pop songs as uninteresting until (/unless) they somehow learn to like it

boldfaure here guys. Just wanted to say, I might be the next clt and all but even I need to unwind and relax a bit after a long day of pretending to go to school and studying music. That's why I always turn to the good classic album Avakaidan heavily endorsed by big time /mu/ trips. It's a collab between the best idols both currently in and just recenty retired from the business and hit noise band Hijokaidan.

Remember not everyone can keep up their classical art music act all day. And for those of you like me, there's always idol to save the day. Based idols.

Wow this is awful advice. Don't believe this fake's lies. As the real boldfaure I'm gonna tell you the proper way to learn theory real quick. Start with the classics. Listen to Mozart, Bach, etc. Study their compositions and sheet music.* Then move on to your middle periods ie Wagner. Keep going until you reach your modern classics like Stockhausen, Feldman, etc. The only real way to learn is by experiencing the cannon for yourself. CLT would be rolling in his grave if he heard someone giving advice like this poseur just did.

Yes, the best way to learn music theory is to analyze scores without understanding how notation works.

that's perfectly comprehensible. However, one should not rate music comparing it to things that do not have any kind of resemblance with it. If you want to rate a composition with 2 stars simly because you don't like it, feel free to do it and then to justify your choice, if asked. Seems a quite easy method to go on, uh?

True. Tentenko is a great survivor. Her industrial stuff is top of line tunes. There wasn't a single bad BiS member. It is all pointless however as I have given my life to Nayuta in praise of her glorious achievements.

>Well, being it a visual installation following 9/11, and dealing with erasure of memory and matter, I think there are some things which could go a bit over "people are not gonna listen to this for more than two hours".

Nope, just as much as The Well Tuned Piano wouldn't if it didn't last 4 hours. It would have lost most of his magic atmosphere and would not have been able to explore the progressive tape erasure in the same subtle way, applying the microtonal teachings of people like Scelsi.
>>
>>65834759
can Jojo even make regular/conventional music?
>>
>>65834791
I doubt it. Hijokaidan started because he couldn't decide on a sound for his normal band. Everyone was about to quit, so he made noise as a way to give up; so they all stayed. That and Mikawa just wants to make sound come from things. He doesn't care with what or how. Idol is the perfect output for the both of them. Cute girls mixed with cacophony. What a glorious time we live in indeed.
