Do you have any dumb rules to collecting albums? I was wondering if I should have a 12, 13 or 14 album limit per artist. That way things don't get over saturated. So if I was to give myself a number limit, what should my cut off number be? I'm paranoid of becoming a hoarder.

preview it online at least once and ideally get it into rotation online at least a couple times

it's never been easier to sample an artist's entire discography for the price of an internet connection. so if you're enjoying some album, then check if there's not one you'd like even more, and buy the best one.

then wait. sometimes when I get that album, I say, "why did I want that? what did I see in it? oh well..." - all because once I've spent the cash, it changes my relationship with an album.

if it turns out it kicks your ass, then buy your 2nd favourite, repeat until questions about diminishing returns start nagging at you.

I've also spent too many years browsing in used music stores. I call it being in the market for nothing in particular. the only benefit is the one I go to lets me sample it before, so it's not so bad, but only having one shot at hearing it isn't the same thing as being able to relisten at home and compare the recording to other favourites at your convenience. but bargains are still to be had there, so whatever.

Well The Beatles had about 14 albums of good material, all good albums with different moods for sure... So 14 is a good number. Not unlucky like 13 or basic like 12. Go for 14 limit OP. After that... You are a hoarder good job!
