try layering a quiet hihat with the snare (bell hits are good for this), makes it cut through the mix better, the way they're now they sort of get drowned out a bit. Maybe turn down the bass just a little bit too, it'd make the drums sound weak on a big system.

It just seemed like more teenage boy action with melodrama and really clumsy references thrown in.

The music, as expected of one of the largest electronic dance music (EDM) festivals in the US, is amazing, with most of the hottest names in EDM spinning. Headliners this year included Tiesto and David Guetta. Tiesto's set was one of the best sets I've ever seen at any rave, festival or EDM club. I was also blown away by Afrojack and Steve Aoki, who were lesser known artists and I didn't really have any expectations going in, but they both put on amazing shows.

idk what it is with anime TV shows but they just irk me. Everything is so massively over the top, characters are always either screaming at eachother or whimpering in the corner. The characters themselves are always paper thin and just follow boring archetypes. Anime TV reminds me of soap operas. I've watched a bunch of critically acclaimed anime series and they all have the same feel to me, I guess it's a Japanese thing. I mean, maybe it's just like a genre I don't like, but the way I see non-japanese people talk about anime it seems to me that it's comparable to western drama and it's just not even close for me. Anime shows to me will never master the art of comedy like The Simpsons, or master dramatic character story telling like The Sopranos or Mad Men.

that is a part of it, yeah, but it's also not done for the traditional reasons (bad storytelling)
in my opinion it's almost as much a commentary on other animes/anime culture and tropes as it is a story of its own
even if you don't like the genre, i still strongly encourage you to at least finish the series (and the movie as well, it's an alternate version of the last two episodes) just for a better understanding of why people like/don't like it

Yeah it's always tempting to crank the subs up too much when listening on home setups but trust me if you played that loud on a proper soundsystem you wouldn't be able to hear anything else. Try listening to tunes you know have good bass quietly and comparing the bass levels to your tracks.
Also maybe shuffle your hihats more to get that proper staggering vibe.

I wouldn't say this applies to Eva imo, but also, Eva is in part meant as a deconstruction of typical anime archetypes, so if you don't watch a lot of anime, keep that in mind. But then again I find most western drama boring (The Wire was really great though) so it could just be a 'matter of preference'

The electronic music from 2010 - 2012 was beast...nowadays all of the electronic music (except all forms of trap) sounds exactly the same and gets boring after the 4th song in the Playlist (EDM, Deep house, tropical house, tech house...).
in 2010-2012 you can find songs like Memories and Sexy Bitch from David Guetta, Spaceman or encoded from Hardwell, all songs from Swedish house mafia, no beef from steve aoki and afrojack...i could name million of other songs...
now TYPICAL 2015/2016 songs...cannot think of one example... every song nearly gets the same lead synth, behind that a 128bpm kick and a drop, which is shitty af... and while that I have not even puked me of Deep House and Tropical House .thanks....
