you might say "But they're not that successful" but even their cultish fanbase doesn't really make sense
>>
>>65815008

Jimmy Buffett is good though. He doesn't have tons of hits or anything, it's as simple as having great songs and lots of old people liking to get drunk and go to your concerts

His success is legitimate af
>>
>>65815118
But he's a hack
>>
>>65815136
Not really. Hack implies he's trying to be something he's not. He knows exactly what he's doing, who he's playing for.

Just because you're not into his style (which is fine, I don't like it much either), doesn't invalidate him.

His success doesn't defy any logic whatsoever, especially if you understand 70s rock music and the mentality of a 40 something in the 21st century.
>>
>>65815118
He has one hit song. And out of that he has a line of hotels and restaurants, three best-selling books, and a legion of annoying fans who follow him around like he's The Grateful Dead. All I want to know is why him?
>>
>>65815136

Jimmy Buffett is far from a hack, he's a really good songwriter. His songs are simple and instantly grab you. I would call people like Radiohead a hack before I called Jimmy Buffett a hack. The fact that he still makes millions of dollars a year playing shows without radio play/mtv attention/magazine covers is indicative of someone who is not a 'hack'

compared to some FOTM fake internet hype shit that most of /mu/ consider 'patrician', acts with no memorable songs that rely on gimmicks or production to sound interesting
>>
>>65815291
This is really not that hard to understand if you actually listen to his music.

His schtick is so carefully catered to his fanbase, it is neither surprising he is a success nor his fans are so loyal.

He is the epitome of middle aged parents who take a cruise to the Bahamas, drink a shit ton of cocktails and passing out at nine o'clock, and spend the rest of their cruise sitting in their rooms watching television, perfectly content.
>>
>>65815291
His music is chill even if you have no friends like me. Nothing but good vibes, not hard to see why he's popular.
>>
>>65815100
I can't figure out who their fanbase is tho

I've never met anyone who unironically liked them

>>65815008
Not logic defying. If you listen to pop country, you'll notice that every song seems like it was either written by Jimmy Buffett or a frat guy that really like Jimmy Buffett. This is music for people who don't listen to music, who just want basic melodies with lyrics that paint a pleasant picture.

I think the average age of Stones audiences was at its highest in the 90s-early 2000s and it's gotten gradually younger since then.

>Jimmy Buffett (born in Mississippi, but raised in Alabama) has concocted a hybrid of singer-songwriter, comedian, romantic individualist, eccentric and drunkard. He has dedicated his career to the sea.

>After moving to Florida, Buffett founds his mission in life. His first masterpiece was A White Sport Coat & A Pink Crustacean (Dunhill, 1973), that contains colloquial vignettes such as Great Fillin' Station Holdup and They Don't Dance Like Carmen No More, and Death Of An Unpopular Poet, the first of a long gallery of nostalgic and ironic characters that express his humane but detached view of life and the world: Lord Buckley's God's Own Drunk on Living & Dying in 3/4 Time (Dunhill, 1974), that also contains the catchy Come Monday, Pirate Looks At Forty and Life Is Just A Tire Swing on A1A (Dunhill, 1974); Livingston Saturday Night on Rancho Deluxe (United Artists, 1975) Havana Daydreaming on Havana Daydreamin' (ABC, 1976), which also contains the bizarre My Head Hurts My Feet Stink; and the most famous of them all, the ode to laziness and relaxation Margaritaville, on Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes (ABC, 1977), which also contains Changes In Attitudes. His style slowly mutated into a quirky Carabbean honky-tonk (i.e., colored with elements of reggae, salsa and calypso).

>Cheeseburger in Paradise, Cowboy In The Jungle, African Friend and Son Of A Son Of A Sailor make Son Of a Son Of a Sailor (ABC, 1978) one of his best.

Nothing about Jimmy Buffet defies logic. His music is so completely inoffensive and bland, yet pretty enjoyable. We play it on the radio at work all the time.
>>
>>65825064
Now RHCP...that defies logic.

At least those bands were good at one time. U2 sucked in 1981, they sucked in 1985, they sucked in 1991, they sucked in 1995, they sucked in 2000, and they suck now.

it's funky and fun alt rock that middle-aged stoners can get stoned and chill and pretend to dance to and 20 something year olds can pretend they've loved their whole lives since they grew up with them and "new music is shit"
>>
>>65825233
That's not a fan, you moron. That's bandwagoning a disgustingly overplayed MOR album that you can hear on your local classic hits station 25x every day.

your opinion is not shared by a very large number of people. And regardless what you say now. Had /mu/ existed when Actune Baby was released it would have been all praises for that album and the total reinvention and experimental path for the band. It had very strong rotation and was played on Top 40, Rock, and Alternative radio stations as well as having all the videos being played on MTV.
>>
>>65825310
That's one of those albums that along with Hotel California, Joshua Tree, and American Idiot you only listen to for irony's sake. Also the CDs make great drink coasters. ;)

bad. again. not a widely held opinion outside of /mu/ and the whole U2 is bad meme based on 1 song "Vertigo" and Southpark..ohh..and they put an album on my apple meme. pretty sure U2 don't nor did control Apples I-Tunes servers. U2 is a solid band. Their output in the late 80's and early 90's is pretty damn good even if they descended into the mushiest of pop rock post 2000. South Park made hating U2 a meme; I remember when the Bono shit episode came out and suddenly everyone was making fun of the band even though they had been well respected up to that point.
>>
>>65825584
U2 got big for the sole reason that they took themselves seriously and didn't wear clown costumes while playing shredder guitar. In the 80s, that was almost refreshing.
>>
>>65825509
I never disputed the album was digitally remastered and put on CD. Why was this even mentioned. True. CD's did not exist in the 70's and the best format for music was vinyl followed by reel to reel, then cassette then 8-Track. in terms of musical media quality.

The Joshua Tree [Island, 1987]

Let it build and ebb and wash and thunder in the background and you'll hear something special--mournful and passionate, stately and involved. Read the lyrics and you won't wince. Tune in Bono's vocals and you'll encounter one of the worst cases of significance ever to afflict a deserving candidate for superstardom. B

Have you seen them live? I've only seen them twice thus far.

First time was at the Fox theater in Pomona. They played their favourite tunes, but also played Dirty Drowning Man "for the first time" as Les stated, and Wynona's Big Brown Beaver as a closer. The whole show was in stereoscopic 3D too, so all sorts of crazy videos were played on a fantastically large projected screen. Me and my best buddy started the circle pit for Wynona's Big Brown Beaver, and beavers flew at us in 3D. One of the greatest times in my life. I fucking love Primus. Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers is the greatest fucking opener track for their shows, and being able to play it is the greatest feeling ever.

That 3D tour was great, Jay Lane nailed those shows. Green Naugahyde is a fucking awesome album too and Lee Van Cleef is one of my favourites from that album. Primus w/ The Fungi Ensemble was awesome too, The Chocolate Factory live was phenomenal.

Les too was the reason I picked up bass, and while I don't have expertise, I love to play around with it.

Anyways, I bought Green Naugahyde when I was on vacation in Bullhead Arizona years ago after it had first come out. The package came with two CDs, both of which were identical in serial number and content. I believe I purchased I a fluke unit, and I love it.

By the way, who the hell's Bob Cock and where's that yellow sock?
