I haven't listened to a lot of their music but I've tried getting into them before and songs like "Losing my religion" are just banal and horrible. I don't know how anyone could like them.

It's almost like music is subjective

>I don't particularly enjoy something so it must be bad
Was this worth an entire thread?
I don't even like R.E.M. that much either.
I really hate REM aswell
especially their name

How about this OP?

Op, their early stuff is fantastic and catchy Jangle pop. Give it a listen.

Early R.E.M. is quite good. Radio Free Europe is a classic, and It's The End of The World As We Know It is the best hardcore punk song ever written and performed by a band that was neither. (And their cover of Strange by Wire is pretty good too) They lost me after Green, though. That much, I'll admit.

Agreed. It's the kind of music that has absolutely no discernable effect on me whatsoever. Silence literally produces the same effect. In fact, I think silence may be more powerful -- it's certainly preferred.

>buh... but it's all relative
Invoking subjectivity is a lazy and tepid approach to artistic critique. OBVIOUSLY it's all an abstract matter of perception.

>Silence literally produces the same effect
It actually literally wouldn't. Silence is the absence of sound, and REM is a sound.
>Invoking subjectivity is a lazy and tepid approach to artistic critique
Like saying something is worse than silence?
>>65761593
U2 is way worse but I still like U2

>it actually literally wouldn't
>not being able to detect sarcasm
>like saying something is worse than silence
No, at least that might facilitate a dialogue.

U2 is THE average rock band. Any band that is better than U2 is good. Any band that is worse than U2 is bad.
