>>65740327
I think that being on an image board kinda messes with our perception of whether that can be interesting or not. On one hand it does get boring to see the same old words and pics about the same old movies and albums, yet there's also the fact that there are all these people in the world that somehow get this particular response from a work. Why? How? What does it mean? Sure sometimes the answer to all that is "because someone else told them it's good" which isn't interesting, but other answers are far more so on the very interesting side.
>>65740415
best action movie of all time
>>65740382
its different with movies i think, almost every movie ever made from before 90s had to be a commercial piece because movies are far far more expensive to make than albums. we can celebrate tim buckley and nick drake despite little commercial success, because even thought they didnt pander they weren't losing much financially.
kubrick could not make any of his best films on small budgets. and the films he made as a student were pretty shitty.

Pic is my favourite album (difficult choice),
favourite film right now is Only God Forgives.
>>65740795
>Only God Forgives
That might be the most disappointing movie I've ever seen. Great lighting though
Ravedeath is gorgeous
>>65740897
I was assigned to write an essay about Only God Forgives by a professor who taught us about art in context of capitalist society;
it made me really approach the film in a different way.
It's certainly a very barebones film. There's very little in the way of character or plot development,
but there's a myriad of metaphors and analogies that you can take in multitudes of ways. It's a film that really relies on you, as the viewer, to flesh it out.
What separates it from other style-over-substance films is that, in my eyes, the aim is very clearly that there is *meant* to be substance but it's up to you to add it.
A lot of people wrote it off as simply showing off his fantastic directorial skills but I think it's much more of an art statement than that.
>>65741008
The essay question in particular references Zizek's theories of 'objective' and 'subjective' violence, meaning his take on different types of systemic and literal, physical violence. Due to the open-ended nature of the film, and that there was no lack of generally weird shit going on throughout, I had so much to write about; and the cool thing is that that was one of many essay topics that could be centred around the film.
It's certainly not entertaining, like if I wanted to entertain myself I'd just watch Drive, but watching and re-watching Only God Forgives was a really rewarding experience.
Airplane!
>>65741008
I'll watch it again to see
I feel like there's different ways you can do that though. Like a lot of soviet art films, Tarkovsky films heavily rely on you fleshing out what you're seeing, but he does it in a way that gives you just enough, and lets you think about what you're being presented.
I didn't feel like the movie was asking anything of me when I watched it

Intellectual without being pretentious
>>65741008
>>65741096
I've never seen Only God Forgives and I don't watch many movies in general but this sounds really interesting
>>65741174
I don't think it really asks anything of you, which I find intriguing,
it just presents violent scenarios perpetrated by weird people with an illogical plot, and that's it.
It's certainly a challenge to take anything out of it. Anyone's first inclination upon finishing it is disgust, first at the general pointless morbidity of the film, and secondly that it doesn't even attempt to pretend that anything deeper is happening.
But there's a lot to be affected by on a second or third watch-through. The sexual relationship between Gosling and his mother, quotes like:
'I want to fuck a child'
and
'wanna fight?'
that present themes in this really barebones way;
the fucking karaoke after each murder!
You don't necessarily take anything deep from all of that, but man is it WEIRD. Everyone takes something different, but to take something at all from the film you gotta know what you're watching, and that needs a second watchthrough.
I will say that what was a total travesty was the film's trailer. I saw that after watching the film for the first time and it totally does not set you up properly at all.

His favorite film was Nosferatu, a B-grade horror film known for it's use in metal music videos, and his favorite album was by GG Allin, the edgiest clown masquerading as a musician. He is creating a certain persona and posing for it.

You don't spout off to other people that you have good taste in music/movies, but whenever you're having a conversation about either you secretly feel superior to whoever you're talking to because of your taste

I can't be worried about that shit, though. Life goes on, man.

Ranking people who I believe have something interesting to contribute to the site. Someone's favorite album or film is their ideal that art should strive for, and if they have a small, commonly held favorite they probably have a narrow view of art.
And I'm sorry if you find what I bring here edgy. I'm sure people who listen to Bruno Mars and Meghan Trainer (or whatever's on top 40) would have the same to say about you.
intelligent, nihilistic, and with a wicked sense of humor.
>>65751240
No it's just the fact that you provided nothing to the thread except for pretty much annoyance for everyone. It also seems, like with these posts you think that you are better than others and put yourself above them by rating almost every single person in the thread an overly low score.

whats wrong with bruno mars he brought the funk to uptown
star wars episode 7
>>65751285
Never said I was that far above anyone, and I'm not saying much at all beyond my own subjective take on whether someone brings anything new to the table. Would I have a beer with this person? Are they yet another self-obsessed 15 year old?
The scores are low because, 1.) I do not overinflate my scores and 2.) this rating is meant to separate people I find interesting from the rest. If you're not aware, 4chan is full of drones and boring people. I can be boring and droning myself.
>>65751333
The question is what is right with Bruno Mars, and the answer is nothing.
Adaptation probably. I also like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Kynodontas.
