I've been listening to this, Hurula - Vi Är Människorna Våra Föräldrar Varnade Oss För, it's very nice. Swedish, melodic, anthemic punk/indie rock. It's the singer from Masshysteri.

The National - High Violet

I added this to my chart last year because I remember seeing it high on the rym chart for the 2010s and despite the reputation, I still did not have high expectations for High Violet since the other National album that I had listened to (The Boxer) I was not fond of. High Violet was definitely better than The Boxer in every way aside from maybe the tone (I did sorta enjoy the quaint, personal tone of The Boxer) but even then, the depressive and triumphant themes in High Violet were just what i was looking for right now. It reminded me a great deal of Burst Apart by The Antlers. Only real negative to this album is that the tracks are pretty hit or miss (most of the tracks were hits though). 7/10

Stan Kenton - City of Glass (1952)
>progressive big band, experimental big band

The most impressive genre innovator here, for 1952 this is absolutely insane. This really is like a lost, primitive Mingus album, like Let My Children Hear Music with it's heavy classical influence but 20 years before. Sadly the major detriment here is the album's length, the album was originally only released on 10" vinyl and the album only runs about 12 minutes long to show for that. A lot of ideas that the piece introduces could definitely stand to be fleshed out more with a longer running time. But as is, this is both a really neat historical landmark and a really enjoyable jazz album.

>i've never listened to a mingus album
oh my god i'm so jealous of you, all his stuff's on spotify, go explore!

and no, mingus isn't very much like cecil taylor at all. taylor fits more in line with the abrasive free jazz of coleman/ascension era coltrane/ayler. mingus was a lot more structured and influenced by big band and classical music, albums like black saint and the sinner lady and let my children hear music seem like completely batshit, epic mixtures of big band and classical, but they're so immaculately composed and performed. mingus also took a lot of influence from rock n roll, mainly in how he played his bass.

check out his stuff, it's amazing!

I find it really fun to listen to an artist's full or almost full discog to see how they evolved, even if the evolution is only noticeable in details like production or lyrical themes. I've done it with Neu! the other day and now I'm doing a bit more structured look at The Jesus Lizard's stuff.
I've put a link to the song I feel represents the album the best, so you can listen if you want to see the evolution.

>Pure
Raw trashy noise rock with a mental vocalist who adores to imitate animals in pain. He shouts he's gonna do all kinds of horrible things with a voice that sounds like he means it. The little details like the background screams or audible breathing are one of the things I think sets this band apart from a lot of noise rock bands. The music is very formulaic, but that formula is out of this world good. But it's the vocals that will make you fall in love with this band.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMTmA-de0Yg

7/10

>Head
A very similar sound to Pure (they were packaged together even). Features more variety while maintaining the rawness and the scare factor from the music. It's a release I have to hear more to rate.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w03v_VJhgSI

nextlisteI'llrate/10

>Goat
Literally the GOAT. They tone down the rawness and add more technicality to it while still keeping it simple. The production gives it less of a trashy sound and the bass is more prominent. Everything sounds more clear and it definitely feels less menacing, but it's definitely their best record so far. Features my favorite song from them, Monkey Trick.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boUZqysP5go

8/10

>Liar
The transition from Head to Goat in terms of production repeats itself. Featuring an oddly clear sound compared to the other records, this is the "funnest" album from Jesus Lizard. More danceable and less insane, this might be my second favorite record from them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqY5TMAGX1s

>>
>>65715518
Nah, Mingus is much more structured and versatile in his compositions.

iirc he really didn't think very highly of free jazz.
>>
>>65716348
Now to listen to Scratch Acid to get the before of this band and to listen to Down, where the praise for these fucks began to end.
The evolution is pretty easy to see, starting with a very raw and scary attitude and moving toward more technical, slow and clean noise rock.
>>
>>65716047
kek, just leave it man. the harsh noise artist Kites shares the same spotify page as some sprinkly-pop neo-folk band and i think the mixup is amazing.

>>65716348
Goat gets a lot of love but I prefer other noise rock bands to get that dirty feel across (see Daughters)

>>65715717
alright, might do so after this Little Kid album. Really enjoying it so far.
>>
>>65716435
they are much more dirty in their first two releases, I just prefer the sound they chose for Goat. Haven't heard any Daughters album, but I will try them.
>>
>>65716348
I actually did the exact same thing with the Jesus Lizard discography, but never got around to Down. I love how you can pin where in their discography they first heard Slint, (on Goat, right?) when they tone it down a bit and create a much more textured, moody, and altogether more interesting sound as opposed to the balls-out aggressive punk of their earlier stuff.
>>
>>65716375
how do you feel about the style as a whole?

>>65716474
i did remember Goat as being "cleaner" which is probably where I messed up at. But that's weird to me, why does clean noise rock exist when a dirtier approach fits it well? Just comes across as too safe for me. Anyways, I recommend Daughter's Hell Songs and their self-titled. Beyond that you'll just run into average grindcore.
>>
>>65717211
It's not entirely clean or otherwise it wouldn't be noise rock but in this case the vocal production isn't filled with distortion and it sounds less raw while still being noisy. I tend to agree with dirty noise rock being better but in this case I think the exact opposite. And I wouldn't call it safer, it takes more skill the make good clean noise rock at least in my opinion.

>>
>>65717211
>how do you feel about the style as a whole?
What, free jazz? At its best, transcendental. At its worst? Pointless wank that does not at all translate from a likely more interesting live performance. I think a lot of modern avant-garde loses some potency when it loses the performance art aspect, tbqh.

>But that's weird to me, why does clean noise rock exist when a dirtier approach fits it well?
Well the thing is, at least in my experience, noise rock bands tend to dial back their rawness only to do develop a more unique sound.

Some bands that have done this over their careers:
Minor Threat; Fugazi, Scratch Acid; The Jesus Lizard, Butthole Surfer's self-titled EP; Psychic...Powerless, Pussy Galore; Royal Trux, Swan's--Filth; Children of God, etc.

Usually the less constantly noisy albums by great noise rock bands are more demented and interesting in different ways. And don't get me wrong, rawness is obviously an undisputedly amazing quality, but I'd take a King of the Jews-Oxbow over a Fuckfest-Oxbow any day.

Question. Do you tend to listen to new albums while doing other things or do you devote time to just focus on the album? For me personally if i listen to music while doing other things i find it hard to pay attention to the songs and forget most of what i listened to. Also what should i listen to next?(minus swans cause i don't have 2 hours at the moment)

Ravedeath, I prefer Virgins myself though

And if I'm really interested in the album I'll just lay down and focus on the songs. If I could go either way I'll browse /mu/ or do other things. Most of the time I try and research the band, lyrics, etc.

>>65719638
While doing other things. I don't have to time to dedicate to solely listening to albums. Well, I do have some time, but not the patience required.

Admittedly multitasking is just your brain's attention shifting back and forth between two tasks, so I'm not really giving the music constant attention, just intermittent moments of direct attention. I think the rate at which your brain shifts focus though creates an illusion of "varying degrees of attention" but I can't remember if that part is scientifically proven. Best case scenario I'm just perpetually training myself to be a better multitasker.

Yeah I mean, I get in the mood to listen to party music. Then I get in the mood to listen to hood stuff (my family is from a neighborhood that listens to a lot of hip hop). I studies jazz in college and high school. And my friends are in indie bands and I've been in indie bands (I play guitar and bass and write songs). So I guess the results look all over the map but it makes sense to me to listen to all the things I listen to.

>>65720309
I love SJ so much. The older AnCo is harder for me to get into because I feel like the recording quality of their stuff pre SJ is too quiet if that makes any sense. I will check out Amon Tobin thanks.

And thanks for all the friendly replies.

I sometimes do other things. If an album really catches my attention I'll relisten to it, and if it really gets my attention I will listen to it with my eyes closed. Merriweather Post Pavilion by AnCo was a really good album to listen to and focus on for me.

Their most popular stuff is dream/progressive pop, but they have a lot of rocksteady and dub influence, and their earlier stuff has a lot more of that.

also:

>Act of Impalement - Hyperborean Altar
>doom metal

Not bad, a doom metal act with a beasty edge, perhaps a little black. A sound that invokes images of old warrior druids raiding local villages to burn and pillages, grinding whatever remains to dust. Now not all the track have one me over, but the ones that I like (Necromancers theme) are grimey, sludgy, and full of reverb. I think there is something here worth paying attention too, but overall still needs a lot of work.

His music is just ridiculously intriguing. It's not often that I find an album that can really make me re-evaluate what I think music is supposed to sound like, but about half of the stuff I've heard by him has made me do so. The remarkable thing is that he really seems to jump around stylistically, so there's no expectation going into an album of what it might sound like.

>>
So, I enjoy the new Avalanches track, it's catchy and definitely has their old feel, but I have a feeling this album is going to be a million times less textured than SILY.

SILY has over 3500 different samples, I wouldn't be surprised if this one only has a few hundred. It feels like it will have a lot of good pop melodies, but it just doesn't have that meticulous craftiness that I felt from their one and only.

Does anyone else know what I mean?

>he was responsible for the birth of vaporwave
ehhhh
artists like Chuck Person and 骨架的 were the most responsible for the "creation" of vaporwave, but it's such a globalized concept that it's almost pointless to call a single person vaporwave's creator.
Ferraro was more or less the first artist to execute the Vaporwave style in such a refined and widespread manner. He's not the first, but he's sure as hell important.
Ferraro was also a leading contributor to the lo-fi cassette style that was popular through most of the mid 2000s, which included artists like Monopoly Child Star Surfers and Dolphins into the Future. This acted as a take on 80s and 90s culture as well.

That's what bothered me the most about Frankie Sinatra. The reason I like them is largely because of the amazing sound collages. Colours is pretty good, but there are other artists who make music like that. There are few who could make anything resembling Frontier Psychiatrist.

I love albums where the tracks all flow into each other without any breaks in between. I know it's a small thing, but i think it really adds to the album as a whole. All of the songs felt so huge and expansive and the slow pace was super relaxing. All of the different sounds felt carefully crafted to set a specific mood. green diamond/10

Citrac
On Air
Night Dolls With Hairspray
Condo Pets

>Jandek - Ghost Passing

The Rep presents a sextuple album instead of an nonuple one. Six more hours of piano improvisation in the same exact manner BUT this time he includes another performer. On a theremin! Lots of lengthy solo improvs over more of the same Smith piano shifts.

What is interesting is that as soon as the second instrument appears, the piano starts making much more sense. It sounds like both of the players are just sitting in a room, looking at each other and communicating their ideas with the instruments instead of words.

After several hours, I start getting a feeling that Loren Connors is playing the theremin. The type of playing is exactly what he does with his guitar. Just a theory though, but I wouldn’t say it is that far-fetched. On the other hand, it’s probably Sheila Smith (a Smith duet ha) who plays the theremin because she is the only one who played the instrument with the Corwood rep live. Smith continues to switch from soft mellow walkthrough the keys and hard hitting punches.

After 13 hours across both of Sterling Smith’s piano albums, something miraculous happens on Fantasy Five. Someone speaks. Someone fucking does it again. Someone shocks me out of absolutely nowhere. Just as I was expecting this album to end this entire Jandek studio album saga on something so unremarkable, Sterling inserts a gorgeous poem.

Captain said 23 degrees
Didn’t seem so cold
While I walked outside
Melted inside.

The water in the bay
The size of the city.
Well…I just watch
It’s a place to leave.

(Piano interludes in between the stanzas. Theremin continues to wail.)

So many trees and mountains
Movement is fast but the road seems long.

It’s nothing like a person. It’s not spontaneous.
It doesn’t change and unfold in a whisper.
Its eyes don’t light up. It stays on the outside.

Give me a person to love.
I don’t care if we’re in the bleakest place.
There’s the real beauty.

We’ll talk and walk
And sleep and dream.
Our bodies together
Like our thoughts.

Well thoughts come and go
And a smile breaks my face from the stone stare.

If I had said some things different
If I had interpreted it all in another way
And had been another person
It wouldn’t be the same.

Now I have some steps to take
And I couldn’t change it if I wanted.
So I’ll take those steps
And I’ll look back and see you.
And beacon that you walk my way.

Walk and walk and never talk.
Ghost passing.

Slip through the changing times.
The pendulum falls.

But you’re my anchor
In the calm seas of the dark universe.

(lengthy wailing and piano weeping)

Strong mystery. Unfolded heavens.
Fortuitous path.
Leading straight to the beginning.
Dancers dream on one point.
Mind’s eyes straight.
The joy of giving everything away.

The words were some of the most satisfying twists in Jandek’s discography. It almost redeems the whole time I dedicated to the last 2 solo endeavors. A truly 10/10 moment from Smith. His voice transmits acceptance. It’s not the suffering voice from Canticle of Castaway and prior. It’s just old man’s thoughts while he is sitting on some sort of porch. There are occasional ghosts of the past in some of the words spoken, but everything seems to be fine in the end.

Let’s disregard the fact that the album continues to wander around for an hour long coda and just look at that last stanza. I feel like it is lifted straight from Smith’s life. With each year he reveals more and more schematics to the mazes he has been designing since 1978. We all know why the furniture looks weird on Ready For The House. We all know why he combined the words January and Decker together. We all know who he jams with these days. We all know. Maybe that was the plan all along?

Either way, the album itself is hard to review. A moment of brilliance and hours of preparation. On one hand, the spoken word section wouldn’t be as powerful if it was just thrown into a twenty minute track. On the other hand, it is way too long. It was a good experience overall though.

7-/10

Honestly, you should just get the ingredients to make your own pizza. It keeps fresh longer than you'd think if you have a decently sized fridge, and dough is VERY cheap. We probably throw out a hundred pounds of the shit every night. Having enough ingredients can last you longer than you'd think, and the only real expensive part is the cheese.

A bit of a chore, but I did it last summer with my mom and sister and it worked out awesome.

That's just the way media works. Women empowerment (or "equality" as they see it) is a big deal.

Rape with intent is intollerable, but so is equating "clumsy drunk sex incident that you raised up years later to sell your new bandcamp release" to "rape".

Ok you fuckboy plebeians I always have been able to respect your taste and see value in your opinions, and I'm gonna let you finish, but I gotta say that I think anchovies are the best pizza topping and you disagree either you have a bad tongue or you're one of those people who hasn't tried them and are missing all the goodness because OH MY GOD FISH NO I CANT EAT THEM WHEN THEY'RE THAT SMALL
Seriously. Eat anchovies. SO fucking good. They are the only choice for a person of discerning taste.
All other pizza toppings are a joke in the patrician scene and you know it

>i really don't see what's so weird about mentioning stuff like that in a review.
>the music isn't separated from the artist, even if we would like it to be.
sure, but raising it as a main pivot for the entire review is not right. Especially the way The Wire did.
>>
I'm sorry I can't control myself when people talk bad about anchovies
I'm glad so many of you like them
>>
>>65725685
Definitely, it just seems like you guys are bitching about it even being mentioned in reviews.

So I just remembered that 4 of early Jandek albums were not reviewed by me. I think I should return to them sometime.

Any recommendations for small discographies with short releases? I really liked exploring Puce Mary because I always had 20-30 minutes time for a new release every day.

I mean yeah i agree, obviously, that it shouldn't be the basis of a review. But now i just skimmed through the aforementioned Tiny Mixtapes review, and it seems to me that they approach the subject very reasonably. I really don't see why that's a problem.

Half-Handed Cloud's albums are almost always less than 30 minutes and he's one of my favorite artists (thought you may find the religious imagery to be a bit liberal)

>>65725896
my mistake, i just assumed they made it the basis of their review.
>>
>>65725923
Does that include Croation Amor or only stuff released as LR? Also he has quite a lot of projects.

>I'd take a King of the Jews-Oxbow over a Fuckfest-Oxbow any day
But would you take a Narcotic Story-Oxbow over any of these? (If the answer is not yes, this band is not for you, go listen to Korn or some shit)

>>65720292

This would be an excellent meme and also re-establish your status as a normie and a capitalist pig

>>65725668
>the music isn't separated from the artist, even if we would like it to be
Yeah but talking about it for most of the review just seems like a poor excuse to avoid actually criticizing the music itself (WHICH IS WHAT A MUSIC CRITIC SHOULD BE DOING)

Plus, it's not like that whole case really threw much of a shadow over the making of this album, considering everything had already been written by the time that whole drama happened

>>65725677

>Did you ever listen to the first three Stooges albums? If you didn't, do that. Get the Iggy mix for Raw Power.
Embarrasingly enough I didn't. I always wanted to get on it but I always skip it. Keep reminding me if I don't listen to it in the next 2 weeks.
>>
>>65725971
Okay, you could go through his stuff released as LR and Croatian Amor which are his main aliases for solo stuff. That should be about 20 releases.

>>65725983
as i've said, i agree that it shouldn't be the basis of an album review.
And while it might not have had any influence on the making of the album, it certainly has cast a shadow over the public persona of the artist, and as such the perception of his work. But yeah, it shouldn't be the only thing talked about, and it shouldn't be discussed more than the music itself, but i certainly see no harm in mentioning it - like they do in the tmt review for example.

Gave up on Grand Mal because of its length and 之乎者也 because I can't find a copy anywhere.

Anyways "" from best to worst:

>Pere Ubu - Terminal Tower
wew
9

>李剑鸿 - 三生石
Pretty much just a 50-minute guitar solo. Beautiful noise that takes you on a journey.
8

>David Thomas Broughton - The Complete Guide to Insufficiency
Pretty incredible. Any folk fans should be ashamed for not hearing this yet. almost like a more minimal, yet out there and experimental Elliott Smith. I like it.
8

>椙山浩一 Dragon's Quest VIII Symphonic Suite
So, yeah, this was pretty incredible. I need to play Dragon's Quest, damn. However, the shorter fanfare songs were much weaker, and overall, the fact that it's two discs of more-or-less the same thing kind of disapointed me, but I liked the interpretation to a lot of the older music I've heard before + a couple surprises.
6

>Ruins - Symphonica
I can't say Zeuhl is really my thing, but this was some of the best I've heard from the genre. My main complaint is that it makes such a diverse genre as avant-prog more of a seemingly limited genre. This isn't really an exception, but the opera-fusion aspect wasn't necissarily annoying in the way of most of Zeuhl.

>The Gerogerigegege - Instruments Disorder
Yeah, it's abrasive. Yeah, it's raw. Yeah, it's mind blowing, I mean, at least at first. This was fun for the first few minutes, but after about three minutes of the same thing, I wasn't super into it, especially for not almost 40 minutes. Still, I can't really hate this for what it was.
6

>Aby Ngana Diop - Liital
Can't really say I've heard anything like this before, and the singing is awesome, but too repetitive and same-y for my own good. Had a lot of trouble differentiating one song from another, save maybe the first track
5

>Nmesh / t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者 - ロストエデンへのパス
I like a lot of the vaporwave-style sampling, actually, but the ambient effect is really shallow, and something this content-less has no business being this long.

I really like Kashiwa Daisuke.

I love piano and electronic music and he really fused the two together seamlessly.

Anyone else make program music with piano focus?

Late tourney stuff

Torts: Coil - The Remote Viewer

The first track off this is great. Absolutely love the sustained bagpipe sounding thing going on here and the other sounds Coil throw in. Very strong stuff. The rest of the album however was not nearly as good. The second track just sounded kinda disgusting. I'm sure that can be seen as good but I really did not like it. However it sounded like the voice there was saying "succ" so that's neat. The final track was kinda like the first one except not nearly as good which is disappointing because I really enjoyed the first one. Good album but Torts does not advance.

co: Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de Couleur Libres

This was excellent. Incredibly emotive, very creative, well executed, powerful and pretty political which is what the restriction for co was here. I absolutely love this stuff. Every track is great in its own way and they all flow together so well. Co, you've recced me two 5s already you better rec me another one for the final round.
