It sounds like an incomplete album, because it is. There are decent ideas here and there but it rarely feels cohesive or even fully thought out. Half the songs are snippets of songs that might be great if finished. It has none of the elements that made me love the material they made before (heart on your sleeve lyrics, the harmonies, the lush instrumentation, the intensely personal feelings of Pet Sounds on these big pop songs). The only appeal I can see in Smile is the way it plays with the history of pop music, but even that isn't really compelling and seems like a stretch

No matter how many times I read praise for Smile it eludes me.

SMiLE is all about diveristy, there are cowboy songs, shaker hymns, and obviously the over all homage to Americana
