copypasting what I already posted in other threads regarding funk :
first of all, you should get to known James Brown's music, which is really a cornerstone. for example, get his Live at the Apollo vol. II, and then listen to some of his 70s releases (Love power peace or The payback for example, and notice the evolution). The Singles boxsets are also great addition, especially volumes 6 to 10, as well as JB's and other Brown's collaborators solo stuff
as for early funk, Sly & the family Stone albums are quite essential, especially Stand and There's a riot goin on. a compilation of Sly's 7" from 1969-70 called I'm just like you was recently released and is also worth of interest
You also have to take a look at the Funkadelic/Parliament galaxy (P funk all stars, Godmoma, Sweat band, Brides of Funkenstein...) and the various offshots that the band members did (Eddie Hazel, Bootsy Collins, Fuzzy Haskins...)
from here, you can venture into the other well known funk bands territory, like EW&F, Mandrill Brass construction or The meters, and into the realm of obscure and forgotten singles and maxis, be it on compilations or original 7"/12"

here are some LPs that can get you started, but they're barely a scratch on the ice covering funk sea, and only representative of my opinion

James Brown - Live at the Apollo vol. II
James Brown - Love Power Peace
Funkadelic - One nation under a groove
Parliament - Mothership connection
Bootsy's rubber band - Bootsy ? Player of the year
Sly & the family Stone - Stand
Mandrill - Mandrill
Kool & the gang - Kool & the gang
Prince - Dirty mind
Brass construction - Brass construction 5

I hope this will help

Betty Davis [Just Sunshine, 1973]

Between her connections (wife of Miles, girlfriend of Jimi) and her concept (autonomous black woman forges metal funk), Betty's got a head start in the hype department. She makes up for these advantages, however, with a forced, narrow voice and a complete absence of riff sense or melodic gift. On the other hand, she--or producer-drummer Greg Errico of the Family Stone--does know a lot about rhythm. Upshot: most overstated comic-book sex since Angelfood McSpade. B-

I really don't get this meme and I'm quite sad because at this point it will definitely stay and Thrill of the arts be considered as representative of contemporary funk, while it's nothing but fun music with nothing to get down for. I mean it's not a bad album but there's definitely lots of better funk from the same year

whatever you like, we all got our own understanding of what soul is... But I got a tip for you: don't JUST look for good albums. There are a lot of good singles out there and I tend to find the best stuff on 12" and 7" singles.

Have an open ear and mind and try to listen to everything you can find. There are a few obvious milestones of course, but these will come to you naturally if you keep on digging for the stuff you like best.

Here's one of my all time favourite soul tunes and this has only been released on a 45 ;)

>>65704086
it's not I who will tell people what to like and what not to like, just giving my opinion. what I regret the most is the fact that most of /mu/ only starts to care about albums when they are spammed and rarely care to go deeper than the meme, so since Vulpeck's was the only one to get such treatment it will more than probably end on user made charts as the only worth 2015 funk release

She's Gone [Bell, 1975]

Since we've stopped resisting middle-class soul, why is Lou Rawls more objectionable than Gladys Knight? Because for Rawls, middle-class soul feels like a compromise rather than an achievement. Again and again, the sureness of his rich voice betrays a subtle disdain for what he's doing, and even worse, what he's doing often deserves it. Respectful Gladys would never settle for a song as fustian as "Hourglass" or as contrived as "Now You're Coming Back Michelle." Which is why she's irresistible. C-
