Good Morning /daily/!
Today will probably be 13 hours of work but I'm flying back home tomorrow!
The Song Of Morgan part 7 now.
>>65696167
you're SOOO close! We're all proud of you!!

I heard it before once, but thanks!
I'm just happy to finalize my Jandek saga in the following days. I would be able to switch to Furwängler full time.
>>65696167
do you think Jandek has altered your mental psyche in any fashion since you started this discographic journey?
>>65696293
Well I'm still proud of you anyways :D
>>65696294
>do you think Jandek has altered your mental psyche in any fashion since you started this discographic journey?
Absolutely. There are specific moments in his discography that made me let some things go, get over some things that have been weighing me down and move on with my life. I think listening to the spoken word trilogy while walking around Houston was one of the most memorable musical occurrences in my life.
Gemma - As Ever
Delightful bandcamp pop-r&b. The album creates a headspace where the music can really just bounce around and play with your senses. It's also charming, not pushy as a lot of r&b has felt in the past to me (don't ask for examples, I don't listen to much r&b). Melody is another thing that is peculiar about Gemma, being particularly unusual but catchy at the same time. 8/10 Listen to this if you're interested, it's a fun album.
Good morning, /daily/

>>65697428
What's that like?
>>65697446
Amazing actually. Listened to it for the first time last weekish and kinda instantly fell in love. Post-rock meets spoken word hip-hop that focuses mainly on the artist's alcoholism.

Monster Magnet - Dopes to Infinity (1995)
>stoner rock, space rock
It seemed like this would be the kinda stoner rock that's right up my ally, both from the whole spaciness that seems to be a big part of it, and the fact that it starts of really promisingly, but this is buttrock through and through. Granted, it's buttrock that does get interesting spacy sometimes and buttrock that has some pretty good and heavy riffs, but there's just really nothing here that hasn't been done 100x better by a band like Kyuss. And when they get softer and more acoustic it's just plain ol' bad. I'd listen to it again, but it's just overall pretty bland.

Truth. I find myself enjoying pop about a billion times more than I ever have before. Lyrical content can now at least be somewhat interesting and at least on the electronic side there is minor experimentation going on. It's still mostly trash, but its shinier trash.

How much more can you endure?
Les Rallizes dénudés - Mizutani
>medium 6
This album has a better recording quality than their other albums (or at least, those that I've heard). And you can certainly hear the influence from The Velvet Underground, it seems very direct to me.
However, similarly to the Velvet Undeground post-WL/WH, it seems that when LRD are more traditional, they are less good. As such, "The Last One" is probably my favourite track on this release, and the acoustic pieces that precede it don't have any particular quality to them that makes them significantly relistenable to me.

15 years old calling it now
Despite not liking clppng., I listened to this EP because
1: it samples Whitehouse on the title track
2: I did actually like a single they released last(?) year
3: it features Signor Benedick the Moor and I like him
4: it's on Youtube
Turns out it wasn't worth it. Their instrumentals always were meh, but at least they had some interesting ideas going on. On this one, there aren't any tracks as bad as the alarm clock track on clppng., but nearly all the tracks are simply boring and unimaginative. The title track does sample Whitehouse's "Wriggle Like a Fucking Eel", but it's only worth mentioning because it's a PE sample on a hiphop record, the actual implementation of it isn't interesting at all. The final track also has some noise going on and it's probably the most ok track on here. The rest, uh, I already forgot almost everything about it? Honestly, this band never should have gotten the attention it did. 1.5-

For some reasons, these "two bands playing live together" might not be such a good idea after you see the result.
While there are some nice moments in there, it's sadly overshadowed by the overly prolongated soloing, the redundant instrumentation and the overall lack of cohesion of the whole thing.

what's great about live album is that the specific sound you get in a concert hall added to the liberties took while playing recreate the intensity of the performance.
what's not o great about this particular live album is that they play the studio versions to the note, and the mix is flat as fuck.

I do, however, would like to point out something. The original name of the track felt much more powerful. I thought it was about someone who had enough of absorbing other people's emotions (like a black-hole) and turned into an asshole. Now I'm not sure what to expect.

sounds exciting, looking forward to it now
For my 1,000th rating, it was voted that I would listen to Liturgy's Immortal Life EP. I listened to it. Here are my thoughts:
So this is some industrial black meal huh. This is a meal I would never eat again in my life desu. There is not a single track here that I can't describe as bad. A big part of that is because they all sound the same and sometimes sameness is enjoyable for a while. However, sameness can only be enjoyable when the formula the tracks follow is actually good. The songs here were all the same fucking shitty lame guitars and not very audible shitty vocals over the worst and most annoying use of a drum machine I've ever heard. I think this is honestly THE worst EP I've ever listened to in my life. To those who voted for this, fuck you but thank you because this was at least an entertaining listen. 0.5/5. Might move up to a 1/5 because the harshness was at times mildly enjoyable.

Albur! - She Used to Feed Me
Standard bedroom ambient. The first track was actually brilliant (nostalgic, beautiful, etc.) but the rest of She Used to Feed Me wasn't very memorable. Not bad per se, just not very memorable. 6/10 (3/10 without the first track).

Completely new sounding but also like a lot of things I've heard before. Very fucking cool, demands attention and repeated listens. Dense as fuck. Not familiar with these acts but I want to be, if for no other reason than to better understand ... How the fuck is this live? I can't tell if this is 0% or 100% pretentious & self conscious, but it's fresh as fuck. Best of the tourney so far, and first to put the artist at "listen to more ASAP" status. 4.0+ and could climb.
Still waiting for Allman Bros from the library. Could listen on the datasucking library app...

better how?
That was not as hard as I thought it would be. Although at point it certainly wasn't easy.
there are a couple highlights here and there, for the most part listening to the whole concert is nice enough, since the two bands had played together quite a bit at this point you don't get the feeling that they are trying to outshine each other anymore. Still that doesn't save some cuts from feeling very long, and Universe and its 24 minutes to destroy the whole momentum.

It's recycled trash; I'm not even a NuSwans hater, I gave the Seer an 8 and TBK a 9.
It's like a directionless mashup of studio outtakes from the TBK sessions that drag on to the point of exhausting all new ideas. The Gate is a much better release imo. Sad!

>have you heard Bitches Brew and In A Silent Way?
Yep, I really like In A Silent Way and could never really get into Bitches Brew too much, On The Corner is probably moreso what I disliked about Bitches Brew.
Also the one-word punch at the end of a paragraph is the best trend of 2016, get on board dude.
Art Blakey and the Messengers- Mosaic
The Messengers doing what they do best, laying down the grooviest hard bop known to man. Blakey is of course the legend he is, hammering away at the drums, and the Shorter/Hubbard duo are also in full effect, but also Cedar Walton suprised me, as I haven't heard him before but he was very good. (pls bully me for having no idea what to say here)
this gets a great
>>65706753
Nah man, just because some of the tracks were played live on the TBK tour doesn't mean that it's 'recycled trash'
I thought it was better than TBK in fact, that album could get really goofy in points (some things we do, anyone), the lyrics were mostly shite and they had this ridiculous Steven Wilson mellotron worship going on in the second half
>>65706922

The Glowing Man (song) is literally an updated version of Bring The Sun.
The World Looks Red repurposes lyrics written in the 80's.
This is the work of a band that has run out of ideas, and is grasping to fill the album with enough ideas for a release.
I almost always prefer studio recordings to live recordings, but in this instance EVERY song is a downgrade from their live performances.
This is probably the most disappointed i've been in a release that I've been hyped for for almost 2 years.
Good morning daily

>The Glowing Man (song) is literally an updated version of Bring The Sun.
Yeah, but that's not an issue, Bring the Sun/Toussaint L'Ouverture wasn't really that great of a song to begin with (fite me). Also you aren't wholly correct, Glowing Man evolved out of Black Hole Man, which they used to play along with Bring the Sun in Live Sets
>The World Looks Red repurposes lyrics written in the 80's.
For Sonic Youth, by Michael Gira, otherwise it has no other similarities to work in the 80s, also Your Property is a song that exists, also they're Gira's lyrics, he can do whatever the fuck he wants with it, also fucking pay attention to Soundtracks for the Blind next time you listen to it, Gira self plagiarises all of the fucking time
>This is the work of a band that has run out of ideas, and is grasping to fill the album with enough ideas for a release.
false, I could understand this argument for STFTB, because that was literally the case, but there are 8 tracks, worked to a science, not 32

>>65707417
The point of SFTB was to release everything they had left over from Swans, so it's not at all comparable to a totally new studio album.
"Plagiarizing himself" is totally admissible for SFTB for the above reasons, but for a supposedly new song with new ideas, repurposing lyrics is lazy and shows a lack of creativity in the writing process.
The instruments are less focused (focus on solely the drumming and tell me TGM is a step up from TBK) the songwriting is sloppy and not direct, and the whole "large sound" thing seems forced and at the forefront, rather than building on the songs structure. It's like a big repetitive jam that Gira decided to chuck some lyrics into, which is a big step down from the structure and style of TBK, which built sounds upon ideas rather than the reverse.

I do agree that Bring the Sun was one of the weakest tracks on TBK (it's length didn't help it either). Which is too bad since the Seer shows that it's possible for Gira to make long songs that make the cut.

>The point of SFTB was to release everything they had left over from Swans
not disagreeing with you there because I don't know enough about the production, but there was clear intent with the inclusions here, it's clearly not a compilation, also listen to more swans, Gira re-uses imagery all of the fuckin time
>for a supposedly new song with new ideas, repurposing lyrics is lazy and shows a lack of creativity in the writing process.
again, they were written for sonic youth and this is the song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmGWSm2a3Es, tell me that is a lack of creative process
>The instruments are less focused (focus on solely the drumming and tell me TGM is a step up from TBK)
we'll have to agree to disagree here, Glowing man has FAR better textures though

That is a lack of creative process.
>listen to more swans
Currently doing that familia, though I have heard almost everything from them, so maybe not your best line of defence.
>explain why TBK is better in this regard
TBK's songwriting is direct and progressive; they are 2-3 min songs that Gira has stretched with sprawling instrumentals to reach incredible heights and build atmosphere.
Here, they are 10+ min songs built on the instrumentys rather than writing, that go nowhere, and Gira tosses lyrics over.

Every time I hear live Swans I just remember sitting in Thor's house and drinking tea with my freaked out friend. The place where he lives is something else.
Holy shit, this is excellent. Super stoked for Wildflowers now. Ended up listening to "The Album" promo that leaked a few years ago with all the samples and I don't know the differences between the original but its just so damn fun and the way everything links together is almost cathartic in a way. 8 right now but very likely it moves up to a 9. Also added all the recs people had for me. Super grateful and pretty stoked that the Math Rock days are gonna be an even split between Western and Japanese.

Didn't I mention it last summer? Weird.
I don't have pics because me and my friend were in hurry to get to Houston, but he invited me after I asked him about any cool record stores around the area. His house in Houston looks like it is in a middle of a jungle patch with dogs and cats everywhere. Couple of "Do not enter" signs too.
My friend and I went inside. Had tea with Eva (the merch girl for the band), some other chick I do not remember the name of and Thor, talked about Daniel Johnston, Jandek and my friend's job in Houston. He told us about a good coffee place and then we left 20 minutes later because we had things to do.
Very kind people. One of the reasons why I want to go back to Austin at some point is to chill with this small crew.

>TBK's songwriting is direct and progressive; they are 2-3 min songs that Gira has stretched with sprawling instrumentals to reach incredible heights and build atmosphere.
and quite often go nowhere, your criticisms of Glowing Man Also apply to TBK, Glowing Man actually knows how to release tension, the songs on TBK often are all build up, no payoff, Swans don't actually drop instrumentation mid song like they do on Glowing Man
>Here, they are 10+ min songs built on the instrumentals rather than writing, that go nowhere, and Gira tosses lyrics over.
