I've hear nothing but good things about them and "cheap shit". Honestly, I think people with more expensive pedals in their arsenal say they sound worse so they don't regret their purchases. To my ear, they pretty much nail what they are cloning.

Is there any benefit to having a pedal board if I never travel with my gear? I'm pretty much explicitly a bedroom guitarist and just have my pedals sprawled out on the carpet in front of my amp. Is there any reason why I should want/need a pedal board?

Guitar playing in a nutshell:

>if you can't improvise, you can't call yourself a guitar player
>improvisation consists of licks you have memorized with some scale runs, arpeggios and appropriate notes in between
>if you steal licks, you can say you've been influenced by the player you steal them from
>if you play your own licks, you have your own style

Agree/disagree? Oh wait, if you disagree, you're either stupid, or lying to yourself. Have a nice day.

How much would I be able to sell my LP for in my local CL (Los Angeles, 562 area).

It's a 2006 Gibson Les Paul Studio, in fireburst finish + gold hardware. Everything is stock.

However, there is a nick on the headstock (pic related), I'm not sure how much I should reduce the price because of this. Everything works, I'll probably change the strings and set it up before taking a new set of pictures for my CL posting. I'm going to include the HSC.

I'm thinking $600, does this sound about right?
>>
>>65684916
ask $650 get the take the $600 offer
>>
>>65684951
Used Gibson LP Studios in faded finish are in that price range but the finish on those guitars look like shit IMO. LP Studios with -burst finishes tend to sell around the $800 range new.

Considering the included hardshell case and the nick in the headstock, ~$650 is a reasonable price right?
>>
>>65685074
That's not how it works on craigslist.
>>
>>65684774
Clone is a vague term. Something might be considered a clone but is really just based on the pedal. However oftentimes the clones deliver tone that's very difficult to differentiate. A one to one clone will sound the same. Circuit layouts are a common selling point of boutique pedals, but this is more a matter of performance than tone.
>>
https://clyp.it/jtobtr4b
do you know what anime this is from? what are some /gg/ approved anime to learn how to play guitar from?
>>
>>65685146
What do you mean? I've sold small things on CL before but this is my first time selling something this valuable.

I guess I'm not conveying my thoughts correctly. I'll post it for $650 when I get back and see how it goes.
>>
>>65684916
$600 sounds pretty reasonable but always list it at a higher price than you realistically want/expect to get. People will low ball the hell out of you on CL. I've had instances where we've agreed to the price online, then when we meet in person they start trying to haggle. If you're not in a rush to sell it, price it high, then slowly drop it if you don't get any interest.
>>
>>65684910

Is that you, Jazzbro?

Why so passive aggressive? I agree with you but it's not that those statements are contrarian. Improvisation is elemental to guitar playing, just as it is to playing any other instrument. Either to come up with melodies, songs etc. or to do it onstage and live out spontaneous creativity.

improvisation is just spontaneous composition.

but you don't have to be a great improviser to be a great songwriter. if it takes you 20 min to work out some lick that you put on your song, its not objectively worse than a guy who can bust out some derivative blues/jazz improv on the spot

My guitar husbando keeps shilling V-Picks hard on his twitter. I thought I'd give them a go but fuck paying over $4 per pick.

What's the story? Are these actually forged of some face-melting shredding tone magic? Or is it all equivalent of audiophile nonsense golden cables?

For the record, I flip between JD's Max-Grip .88 and Jazz III depending on my mood and the song.

https://www.amazon.com/Marshall-DSL40C-Channel-Guitar-Amplifier/dp/B009AF7TBY/

Why is it that low-wattage amps are so expensive? At that price point, why don't you just shell out an extra 100 bucks for the 15 watt or even 200 bucks for the 40 watt? What advantages does a low-wattage amp have over a higher wattage amp besides portability? Thanks in advance.

Epiphones use cheaper Mahogany, Hardware and Pickups the last two which are essential to the quality of a Guitar. Lower end Epiphones typically use the cheapest chinese chrome hardware you can get.

This is a pic from the Epiphone factory, notice how they put a Mahogany veneer on a light colored wood that they call "mahogany" but is actually an Asian wood iirc.

The 40w DSL fills a large open living room with the volume around 3.5. It's great for playing with a drummer in a small room, slightly underpowered if you need to project beyond the stage in a mid sized room w/o a PA.

Looks like he kicks in some kind of extreme fuzz, starting off with a behind-the-bridge strum for that nasty dissonant clang. This dude is entertaining, good link.
>>
>>65690375
Thanks for the advice.

This is where I get confused about tube amps though. Can't you just reduce the volume on a higher wattage amp to be reasonably within a similar output of a lower wattage amp? I've read about the "natural breakup" or distortion that occurs in tube amps; is this why someone who lives in an apartment setting would choose a low wattage amp over a higher one?

Thanks again for the help. I'm trying to read stuff about tube amps but I can't tell which information is tonewood/audiophile-tier bullshit or genuine facts

The harmonic content of the signal changes drastically with the gain. Amps are usually tweaked to sound 'best' in middle of their range. High output tube amps tend to sound weird with the master at 1 or whatever. It's something you can test for yourself in a store. Go fuck around in a GC and see if it matters to you, it's one of the few things GC is good for.
>>
>>65690657

I would like to put 10s at least but still have 2 spare boxes of 9s so I might as well go through those and then move to 10.

Just so you know, there's tons of companies that make guitars that don't have the issues that epiphone and squier have. A common beginner mistake is only considering well known brands and whatever super cheap brands show up on amazon and "top 10 beginner guitar" articles. You're better off checking forums like tdpri, talkbass, and the gear page for info. Some other brands for gibson style guitars are Agile and Edwards.

The best thing to do these days is to get a guitar with good hardware and neck and swap pickups. There's very little objectively good when it comes to pickups, so swapping to something you personally like the sound of is a very good idea.

I'm sure other anons can chime in with other companies that make good gibson and fender copies.

They're good under certain circumstances. For me I like buying cheap >$25 pedals as sort of a "starter" pedal like people do with guitars. I get the cheap pedal and I can choose weather or not I like it enough to upgrade, I was in the market for a tremolo pedal and wasn't gunna drop $80 on certain ones so I bought the Joyo tremolo for $18 and it does the job, if I ever feel like I need a better one I can sell it for around $20 then use the $20 to upgrade. I'm currently doing that with a Donner Tutti Love Chorus to eventually upgrade to an Old Blood Noise Reflector Chorus but so far I think the Donner does its job. I'm also doing this with a Behringer Vintage Delay to see if I want to upgrade to a DD-3,5,7 or an Aqua Puss
>>65683287
Like everyone else I don't like them sprawled on my floor, plus if I ever need to move it or taking it to practice I'm just taking a tray of pedals rather than holding a long chain of pedals

DO NOT BUY THE EPIPHONE SG
I had one for a week and it made me hate SGs, the pickups and build are shit, like the other anon said just scout EBay auctions and you can score a cheap Gibson SG standard for $350-$450.
As for Fender/Squier you should buy a Mexican for around $250-300 (if sellers haven't realized that Fender raised the price of Mexicans to $600) or you could just build your own,
$100-150 on body
$100-125 neck
$50-75 pickups
$50-80 for hardware and electronics

what is this flaccid Tool ripoff? jesus what garbage.
>HATE AGAIN, LOVE AGAIN, SUCK IT UP BOY

anyways, identifying the chords by looking at his hands is going to confuse you here. he's playing in drop C with a capo on the 1st fret. i'm not about to tab this out but here's a basic sketch:
low notes go C# (high) A C# (high) E C# (high) E F# C# (low)
high notes go C# B,,, B C# D# C# B G#,,, B C# D# C# B G#,,, F# A# C# A# G#
these are approximations but play along with the track and you'll get the rhythm and positions. notice that when he hammers-on the low E/B 5th that the high lands on G#, forming a major chord. That major chord moves up a step, then back down to open C#.
the harmonic interest here results from the early low A. it forms a brief maj 7th with the high G# and a tritone with the high D#, and is chromatically between the 2 big major chords that follow - E major (E B G#) and F major (F C# A#)

I believe that the RD was the last of the guitar of the week run. That'd make it a late 2007 or early 2008. I could be wrong though, been awhile since I've seen one.

>I like having a guitar that you don't see every day, it's something special.

Sorry if I implied that. I enjoy the occult imagery, it's a cool spin on the type of music they play and it's executed really well.

And Subvision just has one album called "So far, so noir", it's great. Too bad they probably won't do another album, since Ghost has gained so much popularity.

Oh and that's a stylish Explorer you got there Anon. Black is always the way to go!

Yeah I knew that but I think that Subvision is the only band of theirs worth mentioning.

Might have to give Magna Carta Cartel another listen though, but I don't listen to death metal so Repugnant really isn't my thing.

Are effect loops necessary? Still deciding between a DSL5C and a DSL15C. I noticed that the 5C has it but the 15C doesn't, which I found odd.

I use delays and reverb minimal at best, and I almost never use any modulation effects.

Oh yeah I've definitely encountered that. You get the same thing with synthwave/retrowave. A lot of people dismiss it instantly because of the 80s tonality. To be fair, a lot of it is stupid, but there are some fantastic releases.

Found it, I'll give it a listen a bit later on.

The custom(s) I'm working on are Road Flare Red, but I've got a thing for the old 80s Ibanez DayGlo colours. Hoping to get an RG550 one day for laughs.

It's a surprisingly solid album, vocals sound a bit like Nick Holmes.

modulation sucks in the FX loop imo. things should only go in the loop that absolutely shit up the signal when used up front. if you don't already need one then don't bother planning your buys around it. maybe if you get 100% of your drive from the preamp then think about it. i get like 40% from pedals, 20% from the preamp, 20% from the poweramp - using the fx loop in my case would be a total waste of time and cables

I've always enjoyed the Electro-Harmonix POG.

I agree with this but I use it both ways. Then again, I'm a digital fag so I only have to press a button to move my reverb before and after. I like certain modulation before and after. 95% of the reverb you hear in recordings is after all distortion though. So if you like the sort of reverb you hear on x record, the fx loop might be worth it.

pedal suggestions for classic country/alt country?
I play a Tele going into a Fender tube amp. I already have a Carbon Copy for slapback echo. Anything else besides that?

ts9, soul food or some overdrive of some sort

boss compressor/sustainer or another sustainer pedal will let you do crazy pedal steel bends.

you're right about that. it's still pretty common to run a hall verb right into a cranked half stack in the studio, but it has a totally different quality to verb in the mix.

the way i approach it is that a great sound in the room is a prerequisite for a great recording, and that when at decent volume in a room almost everything sounds better somewhat driven.

what modulation do you use in the loop? i've always found it stands out too much regardless of the levels, making it difficult to mix. you do get more of the particular effect's character, no doubt.

mxr dynacomp. don't even look it up, just buy one and thank me later. it's *the* country telecaster sound

Sounds good! Your muting could have been better in some places, and overall the rhythm was a bit inconsistent. Your dynamics sounded good to me and you had a few sections that were squeaky clean though. Good job!

don't get a ts9. A soul food or other klon-family pedals are alright, but the pedal I would most recommend for country leads or solo boost is a jet driver. That said the most country thing I play is sort of texas blues. You want a pedal with quite a bit of transparency provided by a clean mix rather than a low gain setting.
