Does /mu/ listen to instrumental hip hop albums? Do you prefer a great rapper on an average beat, or a average rapper on a great beat?
Great rappers on average beats for sure. At least then I can listen for lyricism and ish like that. When shitty rappers have amazing instrumentals it makes me feel like the instrumental was wasted. I really love instrumental btw op, check out

The whole things on YouTube and there's a link to a free download in the description. I don't think I've ever seen it talked about on here, it's really nice.
depends what qualifies as an average or great rapper

I rarely separate the rapper from the beat..I just overall like the song or I don't. I don't listen to much instrumental hip hop. For one thing it's difficult to make it interesting. Most instrumental hip hop consists of sample loops and boom bap drums. The music they draw from are beats that were intended to be rapped on. When pete rock or whoever made a 2 bar loop it wasn't intended to stand alone for 4 minutes. For another thing, most instrumental hip hop tries to be very smooth or pretty, which can lead to some boring music. Plus smooth jazzy boom bap beats have been done so many times.

If the rapper has an engaging flow and voice, generally a great beat will keep me interested even if their lyricism isn't top tier.
