soul coughing because it's like taking a shitload of heroin and watching raymond scott-scored cartoons and drinking coffee in your grimy 90s nyc apartment
They have some great stuff, but there's too much fluff to call them the best of all time.

>there's too much fluff
How? They only have 3 albums, and they're all fucking great.
They're like one of my top 5 bands ever. I still haven't found anything with a similar sound to them.

You'll never get it, all the musicians were of very different and distinct musical and cultural backgrounds, used different drugs, and they all fucking hated each other.

A few songs in Ruby Vroom and the second half of El Oso aren't that great.

This. You have these 4 guys that hate each other, with their own musical style, yet they worked perfectly together. This is why their sound is so unique.
I MET A GIRL
how is mike doughty's solo material?

worth checking out if you like soul coughing, but it's not as good. similar sound in a lot of ways

Weird you would say that because I always thought Irresistible Bliss was their weakest album overall. On mood and flow alone there isn't a single track on the other two I would cut (okay, maybe "So Far I Have Not Found the Science" is b-side tier but I still like it).
I always thought El Oso was a rock-solid album. I listened to it every single day for a looong time after I got the CD in 8th grade.

Of course, but a perfect band doesn't exist. And the only weak song on El Oso is Fully Retractable.

Kind of mom-core type music, I actually hear them play it on my work's radio sometimes. Same melodic ideas as Soul Coughing's poppier stuff but generally less interesting or inventive music (and certainly less noisy). He's written lots of good songs on his own though.
He did an album that was remakes of Soul Coughing songs in the way that he would've done em if he were in charge and I thought it was kind of terrible, but that's my taste and attachment to the originals.
They're pretty great. I like how they mix poetry, jazz, rock, weird cartoon samples and drum and bass. It works somehow.

ON ROLLER SKATES
Screenwriter's Blues is one of the best songs ever recorded.
El Oso > Ruby Vroom > Irresistible Bluss
Also that album where Doughty tried to re-record a bunch of the songs sucks.
