The actual reason is because the first label they released on was called Animal.
So, whenever more than one of them releases music, it's as the Animal Collective.
It has nothing to do with Panda, really.
Also, an "animal collective" is a word referring to a group of animals, such as "herd" or "pride". They didn't know it at the time, but it is an actual thing.

Yeah, though it was only formed by Panda and Deakin so they could release the album.
That was in 1999, when both of them were 20 and in colleges in Massachusetts, so they couldn't record with Avey and Geologist (who were at their respective colleges in NY).
Probably their logic was that each configuration of them was a different group under their own label, but all four of them on one release was the Animal Collective.

Swans (not *The* Swans) are named that because according to Gira they are "majestic, beautiful looking creatures… with really ugly temperaments.”.
It not only refers to their lyrical themes talking about how, similarly to swans, humans are really, really ugly creatures. Also it refers to their music itself, which is often either ugly-but-beautiful or beatiful-but-ugly.
