They changed their main genre, but I don't think they got any less intense.

I disagree. The aggression part is arguable. although Jenny Death and Bottomless Pit have plenty of anger in them, but I think they have gotten more noisy generally over time.

I mean, it's poppier for sure, with it being more conventional in a sense. Bottomless Pit was probably noisy, true -- but very poppy off some tracks, or most tracks actually -- which was really obvious that it had been done purposely with all the forced choruses and hooks

I just can't bring myself to really hate it. It's cheesy, corny, but I didn't really see the Surfers as an absolutely out of left-field band soundwise anyways, even considering Rembrandt Pussyhorse and Locust Abortion Technician.
It's definitely the worst BS album, and the most dated, but, still, can't hate it.

>>65650659
Noctourniquet is very much poppy compared to Frances the Mute or Deloused. I wouldn't say that it's bad, but it was very much simple in it's design, but that's what they we were going for. They started out pretty experimental, especially sonically. They used so much sound design and sonic transformation to define their songs, such as with Intertiatic ESP, Son et Lumiere, Cyngus...Vismund Cyngus, etc. to help paint pictures. The last few albums of theirs were very simple. Again, not bad, but it is inherently more poppy and less experimental. Nevertheless, good tracks like The Malkin Jewel came from Noctourniquet.
>>65642724
They alternated between a popper sound and a punkier sound for a while, then went more pop.

Granted, Type O are one of the rare cases where them going softer actually kept or improved the quality of their albums. October Rust is a fucking masterpiece, and so is Slow Deep and Hard.
It's actually the reason you probably shouldn't go chronologically into Type O Negative, especially considering Slow Deep, and Origin of The Feces are practically a different band from everything that followed.
