Swans borders the beautiful and the disgusting. So its important to start with the subtler stuff first.
No generic stuff in Swans at all actually. it's not really going to sound like something you've heard before.
Start with Children of God....the prettiest sounding (my favorite record). Maybe White light from the mouth of infinty, followed by Father Will Guide Me (these are relatively easy on the ear). maybe then move on to the challenging stuff like Seer, To Be Kind, and of course Soundtrack For The Blind (very inetresting, diverse and experimental record). If you're in for hard, tedious noisy post punk the you should try Holy Money (pretty great, more interesting and less difficult), and then Cop (difficult stuff...nightmarish), Filth, Greed.
Try the live album We Rose from Your Bed with the Sun in Our Head if you like Seer or To Be Kind.
