Flipper's Guitar - Doctor Head's World Tower: Another 1991 classic.

The plunderphonics influence was entirely unexpected, and when the album opened with a melodic sample from "God Only Knows" I got unreasonably excited as to what this album had in store for me. To my enjoyment this album shares quite a few similarities to Cornelius' sample heavy Point and Fantasma, all the while maintaining a similarly cheerful aesthetic. The samples are seamlessly integrated and layered upon with original vocals and instrumentation, allowing the artist's creative abilities to shine through. I'm always hesitant that heavy sampling may overtake the original vision and reduce it to it's lesser components but this is certainly not the case.

A lot of times the music reminded me of shoegaze songs sans the shrouding wall of tremolo, especially "Aquamarine," a definite favorite of mine. A song with Cocteau Twin-esque guitar dreaminess combined with the subtle sludginess of a Boris track. The space tinged groove in "Ground Zero" calls to mind the signature guitar effect (someone please educate me on how that is achieved/what it is called (just tremolo?)) perfected by J Spaceman in his musical outputs of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized. Influences seem to be thrown about every crevice of the record, yet it flows with a lax ease- even the sporadic vocal samples.

The funk of rhythmic drums and driving basslines really kick in on "The Quizmaster," which I feel shares many similar qualities to "Loaded" by Primal Scream, with similar progression and percussion (Perhaps they contain overlapping samples). The rising noise of frazzled guitars in the middle of this song grounded by the bass gives way to a triumphant return of the contagiously happy chorus, a brief climactic moment soon to be overshadowed by the next track.

The final "World Tower" opens as the grungiest track on the record, but sometime along the way the tempo changes along a swinging piano and allows a foray into a whimsical vignette before jumping back into this refreshing punk motif away from the sunshine pop previously established. The vocals are melodically interesting and had me hoping to sing along had I been able to understand the lyrics. A splendid eleven minutes slide by without warning- never dragging on a repetitious sound or idea. A closing remark applicable to every song on the record. Thanks for the recommendation whoever, haven't had this much fun listening to a new record in a good while.

Agent Steel - Skeptics Apocalypse (1985)
>speed metal

Totally dumb, meatheaded, and not dumb and meatheaded in the way that metal should be dumb and meatheaded. There's really nothing /wrong/ with it, it's performed well, but it's just so completely bland and boring, there's nothing interesting about it at all. It's just a metal album. And this kind of metal isn't my thing anyway, it's too damn cheesy.

Germany - Ukraine was actually sort of boring. Germany was playing way too safe, Ukraine had a fair defense but if their attack can get them into the competition, it can't make them win against teams of Germany's caliber.
So far the competition isn't very good. I still have high hopes for tomorrow. Although Spain will probably walk all over the Czech, Italy might have their shit handed over by Belgium and that would be a priceless spectacle.

Also not drunk enough to decently drunkpost, soI'll just wish you gardeners a good night.

Michael Mayer - Immer (2002)
>microhouse

There are a few tracks on here that I actually flat out don't like because I feel they just meander a shitton more than they need to and seem to be a buildup to a climax that never really happens, but the whole mix as a whole is done to well that I can't fault it /too/ much. I can still fault it because it drags a fair bit, but not /too/ much. And of course it does have some very wonderful tracks, like "Perfect Lovers". It doesn't really bang like house normally does, it's more airy and pretty, and this is both to the mix's advantage and disadvantage.

3.0-

Odetta - Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues (1956)
>contemporary folk, country blues

It's all about the voice and the pure conviction that Odetta brings to what she's singing. The instrumentals may be kinda standard and the songs themselves are either pleasant but a bit forgettable or standards that I've already heard 1000 times, but her voice is so goddamn powerful and passionate that it elevates everything by about 110%. Pretty great stuff.

Violent Femmes - We Can Do Anything (2016)
>alternative rock, acoustic rock

Violent Femmes have been treading the exact same sonic ground for 33 years (except with the more gothic and dark Hallowed Ground), and they've gotten consistently more and more bad at it. There's nothing really wrong here (well, the polka/calypso esque rhythm of "I Could Be Anything" is pretty offensively terrible), but the whole band just sounds so bored and not into it. Just hang it up, I'm gonna listen to "Kiss Off".

0.5

>>65625628
I saw the words "kiss off" and I thought you gave their s/t a .5

It's sad to see how far they've fallen. From a songwriting perspective most of the songs ain't that bad, particularly memory. But damn is the energy lacking, everything needs to be 5 clicks faster and the singing is soooooo underwhelming.
like you said, they all sound so bored and tired.

first two albums will not be matched

ah yeah i watched Nightmare Before Christmas btw and oh, trish was right, it really is about cultural appropriation! pretty blatantly.

couldnt say whether it makes a good portrayal of or case against it but hey, i like the art style and danny's musical numbers, it's all very lighthearted, theatrical, kinda silly, kinda fun, kinda ykno, for the whole famalam
not fond of the incidental music though, i've heard very similar scores so often they sound like one huge cliche, or at least i'm pretty sure i have, but ykno.

doesn't work against the movie's favor but i guess im just sposed to rate the soundtrack ykno? might listen to that disc seperately some time, didnt remember anything i really loved tho, so yeah, p ok

Just came back from Brooklyn, NY where I saw Brian Wilson play Pet Sounds

And boy, he's really not doing too hot. They had to walk him on stage to his piano, and he was constantly wiping his mouth and forehead for whatever reason. He'd constantly forget lyrics or randomly stop singing, even with a teleprompter set up in front of him. And he had two backup singers in the band to reach the high parts, so his parts were mostly just off-tune shouting.

It was honestly hard to watch, but the crowds were pretty good sports about it. They'd even keep singing all the words when he would just randomly stop.

At least the rest of the band was good, and the two openers were both pretty cool. I'm pretty glad I saw him, all in all.

Yeah, I've heard better reports from other shows, so maybe today was just an off day. He tried to be a little more animated between songs, and even tried to get the crowd to sing "row row your boat" mid-set, weirdly enough.

Taking a small break from japanese fusion jazz. And even if this thing has "japanese" in its name,, it doesn't have the same sweet synth action Casiopea does.
Anyway.
I must say I am a little torn about this album. Or rather, conflicted.
What we have here is under half an hour of dream and reality clashing against each other in quite a few ways.
the first obvious contrast lies in the sound itself. All throughout the album we are presented with a very well played and created instrumentation that, through the very spacious production and airy composition creates a very pleasant and comfortable atmosphere during the entire record, and through a very careful attention to details in every layer of sound it manages not to fall into repetition and self-indulgence by making sure every sound or texture never overstays its welcome. That entire effect is however attacked by the vocals that come in a sharp contrast first by how high they are put in the mix, how much room they take on the overall range and how rash they come off as with a lot of breaking points in which the breath is reaching its end and the sung sentence leaves in a final rash, louder peak (intensified hy how discrete the instrumentation seems in comparison). While the idea, the concept and intended effect behind that opposition is something I can appreciate, I am not sure I can say the same about the process itself. The voice breaking the mood settled previously does what it might be supposed to do, ich istaking the listener out of the comfort zone that was on its way to be created. The odd timing, in how short the record is and how the structures of the songs are kept abstract are also keeping the listener guessing and make the entire thing feel like it ends just as it started.

Again I am torn. I am still not that sure whether this record was not exactly sure what it was trying to do or if everything was well within the artist's intention (although I would rather believe the latter). I am not sure whether this constant game of contrasts and expectations is keepng the album down or if it is precisely what makes it stand out. I am not entirely sure whether this album is not as good as it could be or just as great as it can be. It has to be either of these and I am starting to believe it is the latter, but that might require a couple more listen, which I will gladly give it.

I wanted to get /daily/'s opinion on this a while ago, but completely forgot about it.

So I got the Fishmans "best of" CD reissue a few weeks ago, and although it has none of the extra demo tracks on the original version, it claims superiority by being an "Ultimate High Quality CD". I had heard nothing about this prior to picking this up, but basically from what I could gather is that a Japanese audio company invented the "HQCD" a few years ago to improve the quality of CDs, then just last year started producing the "UHQCD", supposedly an even greater improvement.

There are only a minute amount of these that even exist, practically all of them to my knowledge are from Japan printed around a year ago, but they seem to be somewhat popular there, and a large amount of the CDs produced in the past few months I could find from websites like HMV and CDJapan seem to be using this format.

I've only read a few articles/posts on the matter, and some people are quick to claim snake oil, but others say given the correct equipment, it can make a vast difference in sound quality.

Basically, I'm an amateur to "audiophilia" and would love /daily/'s input on this, if you had any.

they were actually a slight improvement that was marketed so that it would be possible to increase the price of new releases and make up for the loss due to the decrease of CD sales in the 2000s.

1) I have other things to do sometimes
2) I have other music to listen to
3) I don't feel like listening to music at all sometimes
4) Schedules are lame

>>
>>65629541
It's already gone past its possible settling date honestly. And it didn't have much to offer in the first place. if it had more visible advantages over CD (such as being smaller, or keeping in more data, etc) it might have worked but the thing is overall, the market doesn't give a damn about sound quality, and the niche market that does knew well enough.
if you look at the varying formats that existed, an improvement was always required to make it popular. Vinyl records took over shellac records because they had longer playtime, were less expensive and had better hardware to read it. 8tracks failed because they ovvered portability but were fairly fragile and still close in price to vinyl records, while cassettes took off by being considerably cheaper, being portable as well but also allowing you to record things yourself. CDs worked because they introduced compatibility with varying sorts of readers, could store more and were smaller and thus seen as more practical. MiniCD failed because it was held back by proprietary readers and had little to offer other than being smaller, so did Musicslots. Digital files worked because they introduced dematerialization to the consumer atop of all the previous advantages.
I'm not really sure what more could be added to create a new format. if anything I'd say streaming may be the last format that wouldn't just be proprietary plugging, but I'm a technological dinosaur who deeply believed bought digital music would fail, so what do I know?

Today I listened to Chet's choice by Chet Baker. One of his later albums, the lineup has Philip Catherine on guitar and Jean-Louis Rassinfosse on bass. The album is mostly mellow, at times with a very sad tone. Chet plays the trumpet on this one, save for 'my foolish heart' on which he also sings. His voice sounds a bit deeper, and has lost its boyish tone with age, but is nonetheless mesmerizing. And the rest of Chet's qualities seem to have only improved on the other hand. Great interplay too, Catherine works nicely around what Chet plays. He supports him very well but also takes the lead a few times, on which the record's quality doesn't drop for a moment. A lot more than I had expected, great record from start to finish.

From what I've heard about Fishmans, that album is sort of an acquired taste that you really start to get once you are very familiar with the band (I dunno,I don't particularly care about the fish people).
I doubt that's the case. I'm nearly 50 albums in so I don't think I'll get any more familiar thant this, until I reach the next lineu-up change (if I find dl links that is, their couple last things I couldn't find yer. nto that I searched very hard)
>>
>>65631631
>I'm nearly 50 albums in
I don't know why you brought this upon yourself. You really didn't have to. However, I really have to appreciate your ardent dedication to doing going on this ride. Godspeed, Mort.
>>
>>65631631
50 albums hot damn that's stringent commitment
>>
>>65631646
I dunno if that was with you but I think I explained it yesterday (or the day before, I don't remember)
At first I grabbed the whole thing nearly ten monthes ago because I was going back to work and had to walk there, the walk from my flat to the uni is about 20 minutes long so I can listen to a full album during that time, one half in the morning, the other haf in the evening.
I ended up not doing it somehow.
Then I had a crappy time overworking myself for nothing, doing very little stuff tht I wanted to do and going nowhere with what I was supposed to do. And once it was over I had a large amount of time to dispose of. I went back to /daily/ because why not, and realized I couldn't write shit anymore and lost say my "critical listening" if I ever had it. So I figured it could be a good way to get back into the whole thing.
And it actually sort of worked. Heck i even managed to write something not too terrible just today.

Plus I actually genuinely like some of what they have done and the Jimbo/Sakurai and leter on Jimbo/Naruse interplay is really something I'm taking notes on. I'm gonna try to slap like that because it doesn't only seem fun to do but it can also be fun to listen to.
And now that I have all the time I'll ever have, maybe I'll try to stop sucking at music and plut my cheap instruments into a computer and make some covers.
>>
>>65631703
I don't know why you thought exploring Casiopea's discography specifically would get you back into "critical listening" but hey it kinda worked. Also, if you plan to do covers, share em here please.
>>
>>65631747
Really it's because I knew I would like some of it (again, I've known the rythmic section of the group for a while and already taken a couple clues) and really dislike some other parts, and the challenge would be to sort it all out and make sense out of the whole thing. Think of it as an exercise to get yourself back on track.
Ad I'll see about covers. I'm not really sure I could even decently record the whole thing, not to mention that would require me to stop sucking at playing any instrument which I have consistently done for about 10 years now.
>>
>>65631831
I feel like I'll have to give the Casiopea thing a try in the future then cause I know what happened to you will happen to me someday. As for covers, I believe in you, man. If you can get through nearly 50 Casiopea albums, you can get through a cover.

The United States of America - The United States of America:

(Down with the bourgeoise): Nice gritty cacophonic introduction, bordering on lo-fi. The collaged bookends of "The American Metaphysical Circus" certainly add to the already political aura surrounding just the name of the band, borrowing from John Philip Sousa(?) among others. The loungey vocals provided by singer Dorothy Moskowitz seem absurd upon the noisey soundscapes and guitar scratches, an exciting juxtaposition. The album appears surprisingly experimental and psychedelic considering the date of release in 1968. The oriental bubbly dubs of "Cloud Song" are laid back and trancelike, providing a nice release from the chaos contained in the previous two tracks. "The Garden of Earthly Delights" returns to the traditional pop structures constantly interrupted by shooting rays of jarring synths heightened in whimsy at the chorus. Joseph Byrd takes control of the lyrics in "I Won't Leave My Wooden Wife for You, Sugar" in an off kilter take of a southern country tune. "Where Is Yesterday" returns to 'patriotic' theme established in the first track through a surprisingly normal sequence of horns but quickly gives way to a liturgical chant confusingly enough. The rest of "Where Is Yesterday" resumes as a brooding melancholic questioning as to where yesterday has gone.

Nice riffs and beefy bass on "Coming Down," I really can't complain about much yet. "Song For The Dead Ché" provides another interlude in the form of a dreamy escapade towards some vague exoticism, incredibly balanced pacing. It also serves as an ode for Che Guevara, a notable Marxist vigilante who died the year prior to this record's release- I suppose a good thematic tie in. The short lived "Stranded in Time" is characterized by swelling strings and pleasant vocals from Gordon Marron who wouldn't sound out of place amidst a Beatles lineup. "The American Way Of Love" retreads many of the same ideas, even sampling previous songs of the album to make a strangely familiar sound collage. It's like the first sentence in the conclusion of an academic paper that attempts to explain the entirety of the text before it but fails to add anything of note. The strings are nice .

Favorite songs: Cloud Song, The Garden of Earthly Delights

Witcher 3 Dlc is fucking great

on a side note:

Yes - Close to the Edge
gotta admit this surprised me with how ahead of the curve the mathy guitars are
Interplay between bass and guitar is pretty next level as well, also appreciated the SE Asian influences
don't really dig the tone of the guitar, could have benefited from either a cleaner or dirtier sound, also the repartition on the title tracks gets a tad annoying

Sly and the Family Stone - Stand
Could lay off the wah a little, aside from that it's a fairly straight-forward, groove heavy funk album
Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey irks me a bit, not really that well thought out or subtle
appreciated how bassy this was, the wah is just ridiculous though

>Ground Zero - Revolutionary Pekinese Opera Ver.1.28
This took a few listens to digest properly, but now after 4 listens I have to say I like this a lot. It's very unique, and throughout the whole thing I'm mostly in awe and wondering how they managed to create this. It was very experimental sure but there were some great jams on here too like "Crossing Frankfurt Four Times". Its abrasivnes at times is also very well balanced with some beautiful slower tracks like "Paraiso 1". Some of those free-jazz bits were bananas ("Revolutionary Enka 2001"? Holy shit.) I expected to find this interesting but kinda shrug it off but I was wrong, this was really great and I'm sure I will go back to it often. The last track was a little useles with the minutes of silence I have to say though.

Meh, the general idea about that design wasn't bad either, just implemented in a very bad way (read: not finished, because it was a joke) and they don't seem to have the problem of making everything big af like last.fm

Jared Leto can't sing for shit
This album is cheesy as fuck, some of the textures are alright, still cheesy though, reminds me of that one Goo Goo Dolls song that nobody knows the title of

Now that's just mean. I thought he was a nice guy. Unless you like Nirvana a lot or something I dunno.

eh, Nirvana's fine, they're overrated but still something worth listening to
it's more that there's 3 hours of it
>>
>>65636816
Yeah I think Nirvana are okay too but I really couldn't handle 3 hours of them in one session.

No? If you don't like the Fish people you probably won't like 98.12.28 honestly.

I just think that having context to that album is important before jumping into it, which is why I recommend if you enjoy their other stuff (important!) then you will probably enjoy 98.12.28.
