How long you been playing?
>>
>>65607720
Your fingers don't kill, you kill.
>>
>>65607726
11 days, its just that now i started pitch bending when playing medlies so my index figer feels like its being stimulated even though i havent been playing for a few hours.
>>
>>65607745
Keep at it, and after around a month your calluses will be built up and you'll be alright
>>
>>65607720
Probably took me around 10-15 days? Depends how much you're playing each day.

Make sure it's only the tips that hurt though. Pain from contact with the strings can be played through no problem, but take time off if it's the joints bothering you. Try applying less pressure as well, pretty much everyone puts at least twice as much force into holding the strings down as they need to early on.

Annoying.
Also, am I the only one who finds the rest of /mu/ cringeworthy as fuck? This is the only thread I ever visit on here and when I'm scrolling through the catalog it's just weird.

And I wouldn't call the rest of /mu/ cringeworthy, but it definitely doesn't align with my tastes. I'll occasionally scroll through and find an okay thread

Guthrie Govan, David Gilmour, Rabea Massaad (listen to toska - ode to the author), Hendrix, Page, Pat Martino, Django, Wes Montgomery, Slash, that guy from The Faceless.
>Current/Past Projects?
Nothing I can post here yet. Used to be in an extreme metal band when I was 17-19, then got into a hard rock project, turned into a proggy hard rock/metal band, now I'm in a trio playing prog/hard/post rock/jazz/funk/ambient or something.Sounds a lot weirder than it is.

I've been slowly finding out in the last few months how much having to dial in tones and add plugins and trying to make them sound not digital as fuck was frustrating me to the point where I didn't write down a lot of my ideas. I've built up a pedalboard, and with my amp and mic I can capture everything I want with no fucking hassle and on the spot, it's so liberating. I recommend you try it once, just with a fucking shitty mic with whatever amp you have even if it's solid state. it's just so simple and that makes it amazing.
>>
>>65608605

Plays great, sounds mediocre, but by next week I'll have changed the pickups to the Seymour Duncan California set (ssl-1) and also change all the electronics and pickguard to higher quality ones, will even add a 7-sound-strat mod to it, so it will sound better or at least as good as anything I can get except maybe those pickups that have silver wires and some shit like that but whatever.

Yeah, I mean I'm a logical guy, I know I can do anything with amp sims and plugins, but it doesn't feel the same, and though it bugs me, I've accepted it. BTW, If you haven't, try out a looper pedal. Get the simplest you can (i have the ditto from tc electronic and can't recommend it enough, but other companies make similar ones so try them) it will get your practising, writting, and improvising to a whole new level. The clyp I posted in my previous post is just me playing over a loop, only 2 overdubs but you can do infinite.

>>
>>65609876
5 string is basically a second standard nowadays. It's not a niche thing like 7 string guitars. You genuinely need those lower notes on a regular basis and on a bass you're also not "chugging" in those lower registers since you belong there anyway and know what to do. Also look at C or even B extensions on upright basses.

I dont know how people play Gibson style guitars with the tuneomatic.
I just can't. I like tele/strat bridges because I can rest my hand on them and still comfortably get the strings to ring through, LPs just make it so uncomfortable. Like you don't have anywhere to put your hand. The curvature of the body doesn't help either

Anyone else feel this?

Personally I rest my hands on the lower strings, that way they're muted regardless of where I play. I used to not do this, so I know how you feel, but nowadays I don't mind.
I hate how LPs feel however. They're heavy, the body feels like shit on your lap and keeps sliding off no matter what, and the neck isn't to my taste.

i've tried to pick up guitar a few times before but i always seem to drift away from it. how do you stay focused and committed? as a pretty indulgent and lazy person i tend to just decide i'm gonna do a thing, then after a few weeks i realise how much work it takes and give up. i would like to improve myself but i'm wondering if/how anyone else who may have been like this in the past got over it?

You have to really want it bro. You do want it, but your habits and your desires are at odds. You have to change your perceptions of yourself and what it takes to get something done if you want to learn. There is no reason you can't but you'll essentially have to relearn how to walk.
>>
>>65611842
Find your idols (and not just copying other people's) and set yourself goals. Listen to a lot of music, and not just guitar, for exemple brass inspires me a lot (especially saxophone) for soloing.
The reason why I'm personally working so much on playing guitar is because it's almost an obsession for me.

What this guy said is true but it's the same thing as saying you need a guitar to learn to play guitar. He is 100% right but that isn't what is going to teach your muscles to create coherent music. A good teacher will help immensely.
>>
>>65611936
I'm other anon on the same boat.
Sadly, that doesn't work for me. Actually listening a lot of music puts me into a weird mindset of "Why should I be practicing guitar if you could just listen to my favorites. I will never be good as them. Why bother?"
>>
>>65611992
Yeah, you don't really want to "play guitar" you want to be in a band already making music and having a good time expressing yourself. You're skipping ahead. You're not wrong for it, but you're not taking the steps in the right order so you'll never achieve what you want.

"i can show you the door but you have to walk through it"

So I just bought a DRRI and it sounds like absolute shit once I crank it too around 6. I mean, the distortion sounds harsh and ratty no matter how high I crank it--worse than my Peavey solid state desu.

Could it be that my speaker hasn't broken in yet? Or are the humbuckers on my Epi dot (unfortunately my only guitar) responsible for the harshness?

I really don't want to return this amp, as the cleans sound fantastic.

A good teacher can push you far if you don't have enough motivation, but I've gotten good without one, it's a matter of personality on this side.

>>65611992
They won't be eternal, and you don't have to copy them. Most of my idols inspire me in the sense that they show how far you can push the limits of guitar playing, this motivates me because I'm telling myself that no matter how good I am, I can still get better.

>>65612056
humbuckers aren't harsh generally. Try using less highs, or turning down your tone knob on your guitar.

Hey yall, currently have a fender hss strat and am looking to play some more gritty garage rock stuff, so I have been told to find an axe with microphonic pickups. I have a pretty limited budget, and have been looking at old Teiscos. Am I barking up the wrong tree? Looking to spend under 300/250. Ive also heard it's hard to tell how good a teisco is without playing it, so should I not order one online? Should I just get a pedal for my fender? What's the move guys?

You really don't need bad pickups to play garage rock, you just need ratty distortion, and more extreme EQ settings. The epitome of garage rock imo is the gories, and they play a strat and a jaguar.

There's a lot of ways to get ratty distortion, probably the easiest and safest bet is a DigiTech element. Those have some great lo-fi sounds. Another very ratty sound is out of phase wiring with some drive. Out of phase is a difficult sound to use, but it can help to have a tone pot directly attached to the out of phase pickup, with the two pickups in series. This will cause the tone you dial back from one pickup to be "added to" the other.

The thing with bad pickups is just emphasizing the "funky" part of those pickups. If you can find a quirky part of your pickups early sustaining sound, try to emphasize it with eq. A multiband eq can be good for this. A lot of garage rock like Thee Mighty Caesars has a good tone by avoiding distortion altogether during large parts of the song, and just digging in with plenty of high end. Underwound pickups can help with this.
>>
>>65613960
That guy definitely makes me feel like an idiot for using a pick.

I recently ordered a guitar with a maple neck that will be arriving soon. I wanted to achieve a "roasted" effect without actually heat-curing the wood, which would require removing frets and everything.

If I wanted to achieve a similar effect by staining the neck, what I would I have to do as far as preparation beforehand? Would I need to do any sanding assuming that the neck doesn't have a glossy finish? And would a stain discolor mother of pear inlays?
>>
>>65614768
Any humbucker in parallel will do that, But if you want it to be clean in series you need low resistance. A scatter-wound pickup will also have a tiny bit more high end. I have a gfs pro alnico II, or whatever it's called, and while it's definitely not on the extreme end of the spectrum, it surprised me with the clarity for a bucker.

Another great option is gfs vintage splits. Just check out any demo online to see what I mean. Those things are great.
>>
>>65614890
Pretty much every maple fretboard ever comes with a sealing finish. Also, I wouldn't recommend staining with the frets on because the stain will end up concentrating around the frets.

I posted this before but you guys were arguing about samefags or tripfags or both but, i play alot of Surf and Garage rock and i want an amp that can do both and im looking at a Deluxe reverb RI with pedals, a hot rod deville or deluxe preferably 2x12, 4x10 or 1x12, a Fender Super Sonic 60 head, and a Fender Bassman 1959' reissue. im leaning towards the Bassman more because of the style and its influence on early surf rock, plus when it gets cranked the dirty tone sounds amazing but i dont know if the reissue can do the same. Im also more interested in it because a guy is selling his locallly for $650 since hes moving away. Will the 4x10 configuration be durable enough for fuzz pedals? Finally does the Super Sonic 60s Bassman channel sound similar?

Any fingerstyle players who can give me tips on "percussive slapping"? (I don't know what it's called, but it's like a rhythmic, percussive slap of the strings to give your playing some flavor)

I keep slapping it out of rhythm and don't really know when to do it.
>>
>>65615564
It's kinda hard to think of any classic amp being very good at surf and garage rock. Fender amps aren't that versatile. For garage getting something that doesn't saturate your tone too much right off the bat is probably good, unless you're using low-output pickups. You want the tone of the guitar to come through. Fender amps give more of a "pushing the amp differently" kind of vibe with different guitars, if you know what I mean. It's hard to say off the top of my head what a better choice would be for both surf and garage rock... A good breakup tone for garage is vox. Some marshalls have a clean tone that can get spankier than you might expect, and they have a great mild breakup, even though they're usually dimed. 10" speakers are a very good idea.
>>
>>65615823

Just mimic what drums do. Listen to different drum patterns and try do percussive slaps for bass drum hits and notes/chords for snare hits or try reversing it.

Kinda like this. Also I can't figure how how he's slapping it, his right hand movements is really subtle. Is he hitting the strings with his thumb or with his other four fingers?
>>
>>65615823
If you're talking about the steady back-beat that most acoustic players do, slap every other beat on the two and four.
>>

This guy is the biggest twat I've ever seen. Also, he's just lightly using the side of his thumb. Don't worry about this too much since he's not sounding any notes out with it.

Of course a reissue would do the same thing, it's the same schematic. Don't get that bigass combo, though. You do not want to gig with something that hard to lift to and carry.
I use a Fender Bandmaster head and a celestion 2x12 for surfy psychedelic garage rock (I use lots of fuzz) and it sounds beautiful. My setup cost me about $600.

Opinions on the Pod HD Pro X (or the Helix, same shit)?

I normally despise Line 6 after trying my friend's shitty Spider, but after spending the day with this rack mounted Pod, I'm surprised. It doesn't sound too far off from a Fractal (especially considering the price), and doesn't sound very synthetic compared to my tube amps, which was the main complaint I've heard about Line 6's older shit.

I'm actually considering copping one.

If I remember correctly this is just the HD500X with more processing power. I have an HD500X and it isn't bad, but you have to mess with it a lot to get decent tones. >>65617091
I'm saying they're not great for surf AND garage. You get great surf tones from some, whereas for garage you have entirely different amps. Obviously there's no rules for garage rock and you can have as thick a tone as you want but IMO reverbs are bad at typical garage tones.
>>

Shielding. The source of hum in electric guitars is radio waves, or more accurately all electromagnetic waves. When the waves hit the foil, they are sent to ground, and the guitar remains silent.
>>
>>65618727
i think his question was more of a "why would you shield the hb covers"
>>
>>65618774
It's a p90 cover. 90% of the hum that your guitar picks up is from the coils themselves. Shielding the cavities and pickguard does a lot less than shielding the pickup covers. Well, I'm doing both. That said my other pickups aren't shielded.

Also, amp modelers never seem to sound as good in a live situation as they do in a studio situation.

My advice: get a real amp. This coming from someone who used a POD HD and Eleven Rack for 3 years and then went back to tube amps.

Looking to get any sort of solid body, maybe a strat. Of course it depends on what sound I want to get and how versatile I wanna be, not sure if I want something with humbuckers or not. I'm mostly a bassist but am getting into playing guitar as well.

I also have a Nord Lead 2x.

That was about 4 years ago, unless you're ACTUALLY good or know people, it's hard to get a following here in LA.

Nice Aria! I recognized it the second I saw the "Steel reinforced neck"

thinking of buying a Kiesel Vader. In fact, I'm dead set on getting one. found a couple on a few sites for under 1400.

>Current Gear
Guitar: Carvin DC727, Jackson DK2M, Ibanez(RG120 and S5EX1), Agile AL-2000, PRS SE singlecut, SBMM JP(the one with the KOA top)
Amp/pedals: Line 6 Flexione 2, Blackstar Fly Miniamp, JamMan express
>Desired Gear
Suhr Modern Custom, Kiesel Vader V6, EBMM JP(The one with the Koa top.). Maybe eventually I'll pull a multi scale.
>How Long...
since sophomore year in hs, ~9 years. I still suck.
>Fave guitars...
The same as my "to buy" list

>unless you're ACTUALLY good
So you're aware that your band sucked and you're complaining about not being able to establish a following? Damn son.

It's pretty normal but the gibson headstock makes this somewhat unavoidable. Try adding some graphite to the nut slot to lubricate. You can just rub a pencil in there. What gauge strings have you got? Are they the same gauge the guitar came with?

I didn't notice any complaining, let's dial it down a notch.

>P-basses aren't versatile
I hate this meme. It's either from People who put flats on their P-bass and then wonder why they only get one sound or people who don't know how to switch playing positions. With the tone control and your hand position you can shape the sound quite a bit.

Then you didn't read.

I wasn't complaining about anything lol. Anon brought up that "everyone" on /mu/ wants is trying to play shoegaze shit and I assumed they were implying that I was trying to do that now, but I was just clearing up that that was 4 years ago.

Yeah my band didn't get a following but whatever, that was 4 years ago, not a big deal lol. Never once complained about not being able to get a following, I was just pointing out the truth about bands here in LA. It happens to a lot of bands regardless of genre, and it happens everywhere as well.
