Friendly reminder: the kiddies who post in /gg/ threads have nearly ***zero*** experience concerning guitar. Playing, repair, new player recommendations, etc. The average age in these threads is around early 20s: green as shit grass.

If you have an actual question this is probably one of the most uninformed & least knowledgeable places you could ever expect a proper answer to come from.

Be weary of any advice given here as it's amateur & perfunctory at best.

Have a nice day.

Also, friendly side note:

Anyone posting their gear here has made a decision (either consciously or unconsciously) that playing guitar is nothing more than a meaningless hobby, something along the lines of stamp or coin collecting. Their uninformed opinions and amateur advice are firmly rooted in this unserious mindset, music being secondary to the compulsion to accumulate and publicly display their "enviable" possessions.

4chan is considered poison by most mature adults and is rightly shunned publicly for its immature, juvenile, and sometimes vile content. Lorde and the bassist from DIIV immediately spring to mind, both being heavily criticized for posting on 4chan and for their seeming willingness to be connected publicly to /mu/. No one with any real goals or aspirations would risk being contaminated with an association to this website, thus no serious musician would chance being recognized by posting their gear here. The only people who would be willing to subject themselves to this possibility would be the kind of hopeless, self-defeating troglodytes that routinely post on 4chan because they know they don't have any other options and nothing better (or more important) to do with their time. If you're posting on this site then you should be very familiar and thoroughly acquainted with this standard model 4chan user. There's no deliberate or pragmatic pursuit of knowledge or skill in these threads, just inane, unending circle jerking around gear, attention whoring, and fishing for replies.

For example: Aussiefag has been here for well over two years accomplishing absolutely nothing except for *getting some attention for himself*. The sad truth is that he has nothing else, this is his legacy: replying to other losers in /gg/ threads because his life is obviously devoid of any other social interaction.

If your goal is to wind up like this then posting gear here ad nauseum and avoiding actual musical discussion is definitely a good place to start.

Carry on.

When you actually start playing you will find no two people agree on what sounds best. It's much better to choose a pickup you like and install it later on, instead of get a pickup that will be just okay. You're not gonna save money, and you're only gonna save 10 minutes of time.

In any case there's nothing horrible about any stock bucker, cheap doesn't always mean it's going to sound bad.

>>
>>65574916
Honestly, don't worry about it for now. A beginner won't be able to make a decision like that easily. Just try to get a guitar that's sturdy and cheap for now. A beginner even choosing between a humbucker, p90s, and single coils is hard enough. It's good that you're looking for a guitar with more than one kind of pickup in it.

Though, these days you can get a pickup of any type to fit in any space, so I guess it's less of a concern.

No, they are not stains. If you are not going for a natural finish you do not need to remove the old finish. You can just paint over it, Fender did this all the time. Taking off a finish is difficult and dangerous, and a lot easier to fuck up badly.

I know that heavier strings are harder to bend, but I wonder if you have to bend them less distance to get the same pitch increase? Just out of curiosity.
>>
>>65576555
Same reason everybody gets a les paul.
She didn't know anything about guitars and thought it looked cool.
>>
>>65575509
don't play around on the guitar, you will be stuck in patterns that you know, thinking visually. what you need to do is think melodically, which you can start doing by humming a tune before you play.

maybe you could also try another instrument to break out of a writer's block

other than that, just keep doing it. i'm sure you can come up with SOME kind of melody right now, even if it blows. just keep doing it until it doesn't blow, whether that takes a day or a year
>>
>>65576724
i don't think so. i haven't tried it but i'm just thinking scientifically, i think bending a string is supposed to reduce the length of the part of the string you're picking. so heavier gauges wouldn't affect it, but the length of the neck and body would.

if somebody knows anything about this or has tried it before please correct me if i'm wrong

>>
>>65576803
Nah, what makes it go up in pitch is the increased tension, the distance is actually getting longer between bridge and fret.
>>
>>65576918
oh true, i guess if you stretch a string out it gets higher in pitch.

so he's right then, you have to bend heavier gauge strings less to get the same note?
>>
>>65575686
Lighter gauges:
>easier to bend
>are thinner and require less pressure so they're easier on your fingers
>easier to do things like barre chords and high-speed shredding
>not as durable
>sound isn't as full/powerful
>can't be downtuned as much

Heavy gauges:
>harder to bend
>require more pressure and are thicker, so they'll fuck your fingers faster
>then again, if you're new then it'll build up those callouses quicker
>have more mass to vibrate, creating richer, more powerful sound
>can be downtuned much more
>more metal in them (in the literal sense) so they take longer to wear out

Coated strings have the benefit of lasting longer due to being more resistant to abrasion and accumulation of dirt, sweat, and finger oil. On the other hand, the coating gives them a slightly different tone when compared to uncoated strings, making them a bit less bright. Though most people can't really tell the difference, so it's not really an issue unless you're a hardcore audiophile. Personally, I think the benefit of extra durability outweighs any change in tone.

>What's the best affordable brand/set to buy?
As a general note, you can't go wrong with brands like Ernie Ball, Dunlop, or Elixir. Not that there aren't other great brands out there, but if you want something good without doing research yourself, just get something from one of those companies. And out of those, the Ernie Ball Slinky series is probably the best all-rounder bang-for-your-buck sort of thing.

Because it's much quicker to get you from zero to playing something if you learn a few basic chords from the start, which helps a lot with motivation. Also, playing chords rather than single notes is a quicker way of training your muscle memory for frets and strings as well as finger strength/dexterity, since you have to do multiple strings at a time. And it gets you to learn root notes without realizing it.

Some other stuff to consider, is that lighter strings have a brighter sound, and more fundamental note. They may be better tonally for high gain stuff to some for this reason. They will also last longer before breaking, contrary to what you might think.

On the other hand, you can get lower action with heavy strings, and a wider dynamic range in terms of volume.

If there's any one brand that stands out for stings it's D'Addario. Simply really high tech shit that results in consistent strings less prone to breakage. They offer every type of string you can imagine. I'm someone who plays my strings to death. I might be a pleb for this, but I dig in hard pretty often. D'Addarios have always lasted me the longest on guitar, and I have never broken a bass string. I have no corrosion on my bass strings over three years, and the wind is tight as hell. Seemingly impervious to grime.

They just kick ass and I need new players to know this. /shill
>>
>>65577388
>I dont play any metal but was thinking about going to 10 gauge strings.
10-46 or 10-48 is a pretty good all-rounder choice. I've tried all sorts of gauges myself when I started playing, from 8s to 13s, and I found that 10s offered the best compromise between tone and ease/comfort of playing.

>Been using super slinky's for a while now. But heard they were shit from here.
It's the internet, lurk long enough and you'll hear that literally anything and everything is shit.

>>65577420
Yeah, maybe I should've said that lighter stings sound brighter, rather than "the sound isn't as full". I just like my tone thick and warm, and bright strings just don't sound right to me. As for the durability, from my experience thinner gauge strings wear out quicker. Maybe it just happened with the several sets of 8s and 9s I've used, but it did seem like a trend.

>>65578063
If the internals are identical, then the only difference will probably be in the build quality of the pedal itself. However, a lot of the time copies also cheap out on the internals, making it sound anything from "not quite as good as the real deal" to absolute horseshit. I think a better route to take if you want some pedal that's too expensive is to look online for schematics of the internals and make one yourself. It doesn't require much knowledge beyond knowing how to solder, and you can build whatever case you want for your pedal, so you'll know it won't break the moment you stomp that fucker.
>>
>>65577607
Heavier strings have greater harmonic content. This may be what you are perceiving as full. Personally, I like a bright tone, but I also like harmonic content, so I use heavy strings with lower output scatter wound pickups, and of course rely on EQ as well. I also use 1 meg pots.

As with any offer on craigslist, there's at least a 50% chance that when you get there you'll get jumped by several crackheads who will beat you with rusty pipes and steal your wallet. And that does seem like a very good offer, so it's either stolen or being sold off for crack money, which increases the probability of the crackhead mugging scenario to about 90%.

You sound like an insufferable cunt yourself. If that's an example of the music he makes then you're intentionally using unqualifiable terms like "fun" and "cool" in an attempt to evade criticism and obscure the amateurishness of what he writes and performs. What you're describing as "random pretentious fuckery" is probably due to your own intellectual limitations. Your inability to comprehend something musically is your own shortcoming, I don't know why you'd try to vilify Berklee musicians for that.

>>65587441
You should really be more specific. The neck posted above is channel bound. Normal bound necks aren't uncommon at all. Even cheap guitars often come with them. My $100 12-string has binding.

Personally, I don't like binding. It's a lot easier to chip than wood, which tends to dent. It makes refrets harder if necessary, and if you get fret growth, the binding can break on its own.
>>
>>65587566
If you want you could lacquer the back of the neck and the headstock but that's purely cosmetic and if you lacquer the back of the neck it could be very sticky. You could also out some fender logos on the headstock if you really wanted. The only differences between that neck and mine is that mine has compound radius and it's channel bound instead of a wrap
>>
>>65587575

When a bound neck is channel bound it just means that instead of the binding being a wrap that goes around the neck, it is the entire neck with a cutout for the fretboard. Notice how in this pic the binding is the neck itself, not a pearloid wrap
>>
>>65587711
Normal binding is a strip of plastic. Channel binding is not really binding at all, it's a neck that's had a channel cut in it for the fretboard to be placed in.

I've wanted to get my hands on some MIJ mustangs bjt I can't find any in my area, what's the color of that green one you have?
>>
>>65588472
Theyre sweet guitars, the best around for the money in my opinion. Although I am planning on selling my mustang.

The green Jag is Sherwood Green but I finished it myself.

Looks really good, I've been thinking of refinishing one of my squires with metallic purple and putting some p90's in it. I think I'll just do that with a jazzmaster or a Jaguar tho

Cheers, you definitely should, if you're in the UK you can really easily get Nitro in aerosol cans, theyre perfect.

Does anybody think that instrument players would benefit from an entire board for us, or is there just not enough of us on 4chan? It definitely would be nice imo if we could just have an entire board to discuss our hobby instead of being contained in /gg/
