I've done it! I've finally come to appreciate extreme metal vocals! I started with Death, At the Gates, and Children of Bodom.

I appreciate screams to growls most certainly. I think that the first two Death albums are incredibly primitive compared to what they start doing on Spiritual Healing. I also love At the Gates. The combination of melodic & technical death metal really hits the spot for me.

But I simply can't get into Morbid Angel, and if Morbid Angel is what the rest of Death Metal is like, then I won't be able to enjoy it. I didn't even know that Death Metal contained music as authored by Death and At the Gates, it's amazing! Just thought I'd share.

At first i also couldnt get into morbid angel, but beliebe it will grow on you
>>
>>65549369
>I didn't even know that Death Metal contained music as authored by Death and At the Gates
Gonna go ahead and assume you listened to the shittiest albums from these two bands.
>>
Is Martial Industrial a Metal sub-genre?

Can anyone recommend me some MI?

You'll be squawking like Lord Worm in no time.

Sounds like you'd like some black/thrash.
Check out Deströyer 666 and Melechesh, they're accepted entry level.

Please tell me you mean TRiTSiO and not Slaughter of the Soul
>>
>>65549457
Slaughter of the Soul is badass and you know it.
>>
>>65549369
>if Morbid Angel is what the rest of Death Metal is like, then I won't be able to enjoy it.
Sure, if you're not willing to be persistent and give albums more than one try, you'll forever remain a false. I remember when I was getting into metal and thought Morbid Saint was just noise.
>>
>>65549486
Yea, when you're 13 years old and don't know any better yet.
>>
>>65549369
Have you listened to In Flames's early stuff? That's what got me into harsh vocals and I still can't stand stuff like morbid angel (I've listened to altars of badness umpteen times, still not into it)
>>

There's nothing badass about yelling "GO" before a riff like some Slipknot loving nigger, especially in death metal.
>>
What are some good proto black/ black- thrash albums?(ia. Morbid Visions, In the sign of evil, show no mercy, endless pain)
>>
>>65549512
You're a gay FAGGOT.
>>
>>65549427
At this point I've listened to every Death and every At the Gates album.

Again, I think that the first two Death albums are extremely primitive. Once I got to Spiritual Healing and there were some distinct guitar parts, I was able to appreciate it.

>>65549427
>>65549457
I like all of At the Gates' stuff. I think that their first three albums are pretty comparable to the later Death albums.

I certainly notice a stylistic shift on Slaughter of the Soul, and I get why people wouldn't like it, but I really do. The music has a simple, melodic intensity that I can't help but appreciate.

>>65549412
What's the appeal of Morbid Angel? Really? Like, for Death I just kept playing their first two albums over and over again until it clicked, and upon moving on to Spiritual Healing and being impressed at the guitars, I knew I'd found my "in." Morbid Angel just sounds the same on every album and not in a good way. It just sounds like they're emphasizing "brutal" over everything else. The guitars are not impressive and the vocals IMO suck.
>>
IT'S REAL SOLO HOURS BOIS
SMASH THAT MUHFUQQIN EFFECT PEDAL IF U UP WIT ME
>>
>>65549503
But I've been listening to Morbid Angel's first album especially several times and I'm not hearing anything I missed out on before. The only thing about Morbid Angel that positively stands out to me is the extreme machine-gun blast beats of the drums on like every song. Are they like Death where eventually the music becomes more complex, or am I just such a pleb that I'm "not getting it?"

>>65549509
Appreciating At the Gates now, I'm set to move on to In Flames and Dark Tranquility.

>What's the appeal of Morbid Angel?
Riffs. Just listen to Altars Of Madness and close your eyes, close your eyes and focus only on Trey's guitar. Eventually it'll click, and when it does, you'll finally understand what death metal really is about.

>>
>>65549620
But that's what I'm trying to do. That's what I'm telling you I did with Death. Their first two albums sound incredibly simplistic compared to Spiritual Healing and that's with me focusing on the guitars.

I'll give it a go again tomorrow with Altars of Madness. This'll be my fourth listen .
>>
>>65549561
>The guitars are not impressive
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh you're that kind of faggot. Okay, I get it. I call you a faggot because Trey Azagthtoh is one of the best guitarists in death metal and was very innovative in his heyday. What you just said is the equivalent of saying Rob Halford wasn't an impressive singer.
>>
>>65549620
>have to focus on a sliver of the sound to appreciate it
yeah maybe if the rest of it wasn't shit then it would almost be good!
>>
>>65549662
>death metal
>the guitar is a sliver of the sound
wut
>>
>>65549602
give it some time. it might take a while. give it a break, wait a few weeks, than try listening to it again.
>>
>>65549602
Unfortunately Dark Tranquillity only has somewhat interesting guitar parts on their first couple albums, and In Flames has no interesting guitar work ever. Try the first few Amorphis records instead, the guitarwork will be engaging enough to get you past the guttural vocals.

>>65549695
>replying to AoM shitposters
Let it be
>>
>>65549655
I just don't get why he's so innovative at this point. If he's the best Death Metal guitarist, how is that being qualified? Is it like classical music where I have to understand music theory in order to appreciate the mathematical complexity of it, or what?

When I listen to Altars of Madness, I hear repetitive, non-distinct guitar parts. The drumming is explosive and certainly stands out to me however.

>>65549707
Well I'll listen to it again tomorrow and then take your advice and give it a cooling period before doing so again.
>>
>>65549651
Then death metal might not be for you right now
>SOTS
>In Flames
>CoB
>90's Death
It's obvious that you look for death metal that exceeds at missing what death metal is about. Arghoslent and Eucharist would be two good bands to start with, very mrelodic but still very heavy. Eucharist is focused more on tremelo picked black metal riffs whereas Arghoslent incorporates traditional heavy metal riffs with their sound (and not in the cheesy stadium rock fashion Carcass did with Heartwork).
>>
>>65549695
yeah what the fuck about the vocals, bass, and drums? yeah they're all shit but the guitars are good so its good?? lmoaing @ ur life

He thinks the guitars and drums on albums like Altars of Madness and Blessed are the Sick are shit while praising pure fucking garbage like Slaughter of the Soul. We're dealing with a metalcore kiddie here. It's best if we ignore his faggotry.

>>65549762
I listened to that album at least 6 times. The first five times I did it without reading the lyrics. The sixth time I devoted a whole session to reading the lyrics of every song.

Operation Mindcrime sucks. The instrumentals are bland, the album drags on, the lyrics aren't particularly groundbreaking in any way.

It's Tommy by an Iron Maiden cover band.
>>
>>65549651
>>65549753
You may want to try Covenant, their 3rd album, instead. I found it to be one of the most accessible death metal records, with very clean production and comprehensible songwriting, that is still quite good. One of the albums that got me into DM, along with ITP by Death for what it's worth.

You just gotta put yourself in the point of view of someone that lived during 1989 and understand that nothing that purely evil sounding had been released. The vocals, the riffing, the drumming, even the lyrics were all different from anything else that existed at the time.
>>
>>65549753
>Well I'll listen to it again tomorrow and then take your advice and give it a cooling period before doing so again.
Yes, do that. Not sure if this is the best example, but: have you ever been stuck in stage in a video game, just trying it over and over again and failing, then you quit and go to sleep and when you play it again the next day you do it on your first try?
It's the same thing. You take a break and go back to it renewed, with your thoughts clear.
>>
>>65549815
One other thing about Altars is that the catchiest songs are in the middle of the album (Visions from the Dark Side, Chapel of Ghouls).

This is probably one of the 10 best metal shows played by any band anywhere, but come on you don't always need context to appreciate great albums. Albums like Hell Awaits, Melissa, and yes AoM have excellent songwriting that remains fresh and engaging to this day.

The longer you spend time with death metal the more you'll hopefully appreciate the music from a wholistic perspective instead of pinpointing otherwise disparate elements and trying to make sense of it from there. I mean this from an aesthetic/compositional-structural sense.

How come this board (and this general, to a greater extent) has a much higher contrarian:normal ratio (more than 0.5 for /metal/ I'd say) than any other discussion forum? Is it the anonymity?

You gotta admit he's right here though. Heartwork featured bland chugga-chugga riffing underneath melodic, intricate solos. Modern melodeath picked up on their boring chugga-chugga style (not early-In Flames's heartwarming melodies, not Dark Tranquility's progressive nature, not even SotS's pounding, thrashy riffs) but forgot to write halfway decent solos.
