Metal fan here. I'm interested in jazz from the standpoint of an appreciator of complex, virtuoso, yet melodic music. I enjoy Louis Armstrong's stuff from his Hot Fives & Hot Sevens and have only really listened to swing after that. Where do I go from here? Do I just listen to the big names of the respective Jazz instruments? Like Coleman Hawkins?

Normally I'd say to check out some current jazz players since they usually favor complex compositions and there are some who have even been pretty influenced by metal but if you already like Louis Armstrong then just keep going off of that. Check out Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young and Roy Eldridge and Johnny Hodges and stuff like that then just keep going off of whatever you like of those.
