Are augmented and diminished chords under-utilized in modern music? Should we encourage and promote greater use of them?
>>
Nah I'm fine with my major/minor indie shit
>>
Gonna piggyback on this thread. Is a series of fifths triad(IE C,G,D) an inversion of a Suspended chord?

nah not a suspended chord, more like a power chord add9
>>
Harmony in pop music has been getting simplified since new wave became the mainstream back in the late 70s/early 80s. Everything is underutilized except for the occasional suspended chord in a "jazzy" indie rock gesture.

Is it fair to blame the popularization of Black Sabbath and the "power chord" for this? Because I seriously think that basing a song almost entirely on the fifth is the reason rock bands sound so shitty and homogenized.

You listen to shitty music, not modern music's fault you don't listen to the stuff with more diversity.

Black Sabbath played power chords because they sound good on a distorted guitar. A lot of more complex chords just kind of sound like shit on a clipped, overdriven amp. There's still a decent amount of chromaticism in their music.

ain't the fifths fault it sounds so damn good
>>
>>65515937
Yes obviously all Medieval music is shit because of the reliance on fifths. Great logic anon

this is great, thanks anon

This tbqh. Pop music up til the 60s had interesting harmonic movement. Take a look at any Meme Boys song from Pet Sounds, there are wide variety of chords being played to invoke certain things. m7b5, dominant ninths, maj7ths, m9s, augmented chords were all there, even in Beatles songs.

Pop music is largely triadic now though minus rap and that's only because they sample old songs.
