Common complaint, but Toyko~Sea of Lovers is a lil too long. A plane went overhead during and I honestly couldn't tell if it was part of the song or not. Despite that, I really enjoyed the first track and the album as a whole. I don't know the full story behind Juntaro/Gero but I think I'll try and learn it now. 3.5

>Lou Rawls - You've Made Me So Happy
A neat soul album with a couple funky jams that make it worth listening. Some of the slower cuts on there are not all that special but when Lou and his band get moving, it does get nice.

>Strangers Die Every Day
With this album, the truth finally hit me.
I don't like bowed strings.
It just does nothing for me.
At all.
So since the basic idea behind this album is to use them PLUS an occasional bass guitar and drums in order not to have to compete with contemporary classical composers, needless to say I was not exactly thrilled.

>Olethrio Rigma - Polemese Gia Tous Athoous
Something else that takes me back to the wonderfully awful world of small local bands.
That's some very amateurish hardcore here that takes the wors of punk and the worst of trash metal and mashes it together until it feels loud enough to be cool. But truth is, some of the riffs here are pretty weak and the vocals are either out of place due to how loud they are, or hard to deal with because of how cheap they feel. And the female vocalist made me wish I was listening to Sacred Child instead.

>The Energizer : Distance to HAppy Trance
Ooooh boy, Fun Radio. Now that's a name I havn't heard in a long time. This is a compiliation of trance and other rave tunes from the UK, Benelux and Germany curated by the french party animal's former favourite radio station. Whether "Energizer" or "Distance" is an old show on the station is a question I can't answer sadly.
Still, we still have a dozen trance tracks here, and the quality is pretty unequal. While a lot of them refer to old loud sawtooth-wave synths and other hoover-sounding melodies, we also have a couple tunes here that really makes you groove along to the loud beat and psychedelic synth layering.
The Blob sounds like a fucking car chase between a police car and some bank-robbing ravers in their amplified van with a dancefloor in the cargo bay.

>Pluxus - European Onion
These guys have had some stuff edited by Kompact, their debut tape is called Music Inspired by the Architecture of Kennedy International Airport and that would be a good sign.
Sadly it's not as good as one might hope.
What we have here is some very stripped-down electronic music that tries to go as far as possible with just a couple small synthetizers. They do go a couple miles, but their synthmobile ran out of juice earlier than they thought.

Last but not least

>t.h.u.m.b - Lunar Flight
Between that and Black Rainbows, I'm starting to want to dig deeper into italian heavy rock.
THis is a good little EP that hits all the spots it should hit but seems a little uncertain as to what it wants to do or where it wants t ogo. In one hand, the title track is very good and would absolutely have its place in a full length, on the other hand it eats up the duration of the EP and drains the momentum out of the short tracklist, leaving the two other actual songs feeling a little dry. And yet the two songs feel a bit more precise and concise as they do not lose themselves in the pits of riff repetition.
Not bad at all.

>Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
Liked this more than I expected, although that doesn't necessarily mean I "get" where the praise for Yung Neil is coming from. His voice is a little wussy, the songs are a little sappy, but hey, the dude can write a tune every now and again. "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" is a great example of how a track can be both sappy and still be very nice and pleasant, and "Southern Man" follows it up with a bit of cool that the rest of this album sorely lacks. Indeed, the rest of the album is alright (although the first two tracks kinda suck), but never really reaches any true standout moments after "Southern Man". Had there been less country influences on here and had Yung Neil had a better voice, this would have been quite a bit better. 2.5 (ignore the +, that was a little too optimistic of me)

>Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath. 3.0+

>Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Unique for its time in how all songs were written by the performer, no covers, just Bob playing his own songs. And hey, turns out they're good songs, too! I have to be very honest and say that I don't feel there's exactly a lot of standouts on here, and I do feel like some of the more lighthearted, jokey tracks go over my head a little, but those moments are fleeting. For the most, this album's just really really solid, and with tracks like the simple but oh-so-nice "Blowin' in the Wind", the sprawling "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall", and the proto-Nick Drake breakup song "Girl From the North Country" (personal fave), there's plenty to return to more regularly.
>>
>>65493153
>The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
"Gimmie Shelter" is such a good rocker that you'd almost forgive the Stones for following it up with mediocre country-inspired dreck. Almost. But not really. Songs like "Love in Vain" and "Country Honk" are plain and uninteresting, and to add insult to injury, Mick Jagger's voice really isn't fit for this style of music at all. The rest of the album is kinda average blues rock up till the final two tracks, where the blues rock gets better and they close off with a non-blues rock track that actually works. Still though, this album's got too weak of a middle section to really be worth all the praise. This album, for the time being, confirmed my suspicions that The Stones are but a decidedly average blues rock band with a few baller tracks. 2.0+

GF and I watched both Rise and Dawn of Planet of the Apes films the other day, and the second one was surprisingly decent and I feel like these films actually work well as prequels to the events of the book/original film. I did like the small little hints/nods to the original work they threw in, like a little semi-offscreen newsreport on a space mission launch. Pretty neat.

Also yesterday I had some friends over and we watched the original Robocop, which really was nothing for me, but it was entertaining enough. We watched Sharknado which was absolutely hilarious and I'm genuinely amazed at how modern technology can allow people to just create films like this and they have a shot at making pretty good money. Then we watched Enter the Dragon. I fucking love classic kung fu films, even though I watch way too few of them.

>how modern technology can allow people to just create films like this
because there are plenty of people with passion, energy, and the will to create this stuff, but with none of the no how (and more importantly the money). Even the old 80's b movie directors have switched to cheap cgi because of costs now.

Sharknado is a bit more self aware than your typical sy fy network shark movie which makes it a bit more bearable, but I prefer old schlock over new schlock.

kung fu movies are great.

ok guys first one down. only want to die a little more than I usually do. so far so good.

>Carissa's Wierd - Ugly But Honest: 1996 - 1999

Definitely not the best Carissa's Wierd album, but I love Carissa's Wierd. Wish they would experiment with the two singers a bit more, because my favorite tracks are when they would both sing. Glad they continued to mature as their career went on. It can really be seen that they had a unique sound and would only become better as they got more experience and solid equipment. Kind of a growth stage album here. Would only recommend it to fans.

Yeah it's interesting how far aesthetic can carry an album. For example, I see spotty production and terrible instruments synonymous with a lot of Daniel Johnston's music but the fact that the heart behind it reflects a more passionate and loving tone leaps it into good territory with me
(plus I kind of just really like the melodies he makes)

Am I supposed to avoid imagining music spatially in my head? Time progresses linearly but plenty of music (pic related?) seems to want to avoid that same linear progression, so what am I supposed to do with my imagination and attention if not imagining something 2D moving mostly 'forward'?

>Andy Stott - Too Many Voices
Man, this was pretty disappointing, and I wasn't even hyped up for it.
I don't know if any of you guys are fans of his, but he still hasn't topped Luxury Problems.
In this album he presents these barren, ugly dub techno soundscapes, and then they plod along until the song ends.
There are good moments on the album. The two opening tracks are great, and definitely call back to Luxury Problems without being overly similar.
It has those beautiful looped female vocal samples over a spacey beat, pitched down a bit in order to bring them near the uncanny valley.
It's a great atmosphere to start off on, but it just doesn't go anywhere.
Besides the few good tracks, others seem like Stott is trying his best Ghettoville impression.
Too much looping, too little going on, it’s a slog to get through.
However, Ghettoville is an album that manages to be much better because it commits fully to its ideas and doesn't compromise. I’d go deeper into what I mean, but then I’d end up reviewing Ghettoville by accident.
I struggle to find words to describe Too Many Voices other than middle of the road and bland.
Perhaps it's because his sound seems to have regressed.
In his previous album he toyed with organic sounds, featuring a bass guitar on the two final tracks. It worked great to support the juxtaposition between the cold, unfeeling synths and the warm, emotional vocal samples.
Instead he's eschewed that and continued to venture down these abhorrent, grimy textures.
This thing is full of ugly synths and other warped drum samples, which sit awkwardly in the mix.
Instead of having some restraint and balancing these ugly sounds with beautiful ones, he fully indulges in them.

If you care to know what I mean listen to the song Numb and then listen to First Night Alone.
The difference in the two really sums up where his sound has headed and what mostly my complaints are about.
I think as an artist he works a lot better with ambient and subtle sounds, like in his far superior EPs. These trap beats just need to go.
In a sense, his music has always been a balance of ugly and pretty, ambient and harsh, and he has been slowly tipping towards the ugly side with each new album. It’s just not my thing anymore.
Ah well, maybe he'll come back in the other direction?
For now, I give the album a light 5 and Luxury Problems a strong 8.
Anyway, if you've heard his other stuff or this album don't hesitate to chime in, I'd like to hear your thoughts.
If you're interested in his music at all I'd recommend starting with his EPs or Luxury Problems. I think he's worth listening to even if my review comes off as really negative.
Thanks for reading.

>NIN - Still
The first time really listening to NIN aside from Hurt. Umm....have people really gone 20+ years without realizing Trent Reznor can't sing worth shit? The instrumental is great, and sometimes his voice blends nicely with it, but usually his voice is so noticeably bad that no amount of awesome instrumental can save it.

>Hidria Spacefold - Balansia
Found this one in the "suggested" area of RYM on the Deloused in the Comatorium page. This is pretty similar to Jaga Jazzist - Starfire, but a rock version. And it's fucking great.

"Reviews": Everything is Good Edition

Decided to do another whole chart for Unearthed since it's 5 discs, will come back to eventually though.

From best to worst you know the drill

>Boris With Michio Kurihara - Rainbow
Frick yeh. One of Boris' best later career albums. Shows these dudes have a lot of surprises left in them. Def hear this is you like their sick nasty riffs.
8

>John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
You know what my favorite things are? John Coltrane. This review sucks already so I'm ending it here.
8

>Julius Eastman - Unjust Malaise
Can't review this I don't want to be called racist
7

>John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Wasn't huge on this initially because of the gorilla-style cuts on some of these tracks, but fuuuck it just has too many awesome moments to hate. Super rad.
7

>Curtis Mayfield - Curtis
Cool shit. I wasn't feeling the opening track as much on re-listens, but "Move On Up" still slaps idc what anyone says. "Miss Black America" kinda sucks tho along with the following track.
7

>Björk - Vespertine
Wew. This one has some awesome instruments and vocal chops by my main gal. On most of these tracks her graceful and smooth voice and lush instrumentation complement each other really well, but the last half of this album drags a bit too much for it to be one of her bests.
7

>Paco de Lucía - Fuente y caudal
This is really cool for a few tracks, but his style becomes really repetitive and after a while totally lackluster. Awesome if you like guitar music with latin flair, just don't expect more than two songs out of this dude.
6

>Current 93 - Thunder Perfect Mind
Gay renaissance fair where instead of prizes you win chronic depression
6

>Björk - Medúlla
Like Vespertine but more emphasis on vocals and less exciting instrumentation, which is one of the best parts of Bork imo
6

>The Rutles - s/t
Instead of a funny parody band, this is just a parody of the worst era of the Beatles but worse.
4

Only 16 albums left. What next?
>>
>>65500818
Frick forgot my Fish. That's me.

Real "review" for Unjust Malaise tho:

This guy achieves a LOT through repetition. He's the classic avant-teen's choice for great composers, and while he does have few amazing pieces, I guess I just don't really see exactly what they do. His compositions and performances are stellar, but "If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich?" is just alright and "Prelude to the Holy Presence of Joan d'Arc" isn't that good at all. However, "Stay on It" has much more appealing vocal tracks and Evil Roody Poo and Crazy Roody Poo imo go on for much too long, but I honestly don't see them having the same lasting effect without their length. Both tracks it seems were made with each other in mind, and it's a shame imo they're on two separate discs because they flow together very well when played in succession. My favorite piece of his was Gay Guerilla, a tribute piece to Harambe, which Julius Eastman obviously felt very strongly about.

I'm sure people think lowly of the spoken word track at the end, but it honestly does put his pieces in a good frame. He perfectly states the "why" of the naming behind a lot of his tracks, and does so without beating around the bush. The way he approaches talking about his names is actually a lot like his music: Simple, elegant, and without much bullshit (unless you think a 20-minute repeat is "filler").

This album had a very unexpected sound to it. I just assumed it would be a guy with a guitar singing sad slow songs about how everything is shit. It turned out to be a guy with many different instruments singing about how things suck. I loved the dissonant sound on a lot of the tracks and i didn't notice their length much at all. I'm a bit torn on the last track because while it's very good and has a cool almost drum and bass sound; it's 10 minutes too long imo. green diamond/10

>Blonde Redhead - Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons
Damaged it right. A post-punk threnody for dulled emotional responses and mild existential crises.

While I make it sound a lot more ambitious than it is, its use of introduction and coda and sequential song titles suggests there is indeed a high minded ambition at play here. And it does well enough for itself, but on the sonic end, I think it's caught somewhere between trying to be appealing to a wider audience through appealing songwriting and being weird through unusual singing and brief injections of odd noises. I think it may be a little imbalanced in that regard, but I enjoyed it all the same.

By the way, this is one of those albums where there's a male and female vocalist that switch off song to song. So if you're strangely into that kind of thing like I am, give this a listen.

I think the album tries to be disorienting and noisy, but unfortunately the mixing tends to stand in the way, so only every other song or so reaches its potential. I was able to just turn up the volume loud enough to mitigate the problem, but I couldn’t help but notice it all the same. A good example would be on "Loved Despite of Great Fruits" where the song tries to build to a noisy climax with a building synthesizer line and clumsy piano banging, but the noises are hardly audible and the guitar never gets louder, just fuller. The track "Mother" is another example of this. Swirling noisy guitars, furious drumming, Makino is screaming her heart out, the works—but it still feels a little flat. It's unfortunate really, because I think the body of this album could be so much more impactful, but it's just the recording aspects that hold it back.

The album ends with an actual coda, repeating the theme, as if the album were one long piece. The theme established there works perfectly as an opener (ignoring the introduction) and closer.

>Terry Riley - Reed Streams
Neither the 20-minute untitled organ piece here nor the 17-minute Dorian Reeds are at all worth the listen. Both are fairly one dimensional and uninteresting applications of Riley's minimalist tendencies. They aren’t engaging, and if you’re interested in their base compositional ideas, there are far better executed examples of minimalism, and not just from Riley.

The first piece is some uber repetitive and simple organ playing, as respectively the composer and title would both suggest, over a dull clattering drum sound.

The last track is if anything pretty impressive, assuming the descriptions on other websites are true: performed with just one saxophone and a bunch of tape manipulation. It fails to do anything much more interesting than the last track, though, even as it does display more variation along its length.

>Smoke - Another Reason to Fast
Another Reason to Fast is a sad and lonely alt country album with a surprising knack for symphonic backing instrumentation. Unfortunately that symphonic aspect gives a few songs an air of melodrama, which really pulls me out of the dark and dusty atmosphere some stretches of songs so excellently maintain. I'd dare even compare some of the songs here to Good News-era Modest Mouse, but much better executed and more emotional for sure.

Pretty much every song here sounds like it's belted from a seat at the local bar, especially the ballads. But the real miracle of it all is that the singer, despite signing bluesy bar songs with a gravelly smokers voice, against all odds, doesn't sound even remotely like Tom Waits.

In another vein of thought, I hesitate to call the album altogether inconsistent. In some ways every song adheres to the theme pretty religiously, but I'm definitely hung up on those stray string parts that don't seem to agree with the tone of the album, let alone the tone of each respective song where they're featured. Also, the whole thing kind of stretches on a bit too long, in my opinion.

I really wanted to enjoy this more, and I particularly enjoyed a few odd tracks, so I'll probably give it another shot later.

>Yura Yura Teikoku - Hollow Me / Beautiful
An odd album for sure, mostly because I usually hate all its component parts, but it somehow pulls it off. It’s an indeterminate fusion of post punk, indie rock, jangle pop, and chill dance music(?) or something. I really can’t describe it, and it’s very frustrating, because it sounds like it should be obvious. (Wikipedia says psych rock, but that couldn’t be further from the truth, with the exception of track 8.)

So what should I hate about this album? Dance beats on nearly every song, very simple songwriting, smooth sax solos on every other song, next to no emotion? If I had read about that before I listened I wouldn’t have touched this thing with a ten foot pole, but it ended up working together so nicely, it’s just too hard to hate the final product.

The peaks of the album, by the way, have to be the album version of the lead singles, “Listless Dream” and “Beautiful,” but the surprise psychedelic explosion on the following song, “In the Forest” also really caught my ear.

I was going to comment further how the album dragged on way too long, and including the single versions of Beautiful and Listless Dream was pretty unnecessary considering the album versions worked much better in context, but it turns out I had four bonus tracks. And they were the longest tracks, too, adding a whole ‘nother 22 unnecessary minutes to each listen. Go figure.

>Jeff Mills - Waveform Transmission, Vol. 3
What the hell happened here between Volume 1 and Volume 3, Jeff? Does this have something to do with the conspicuous lack of any Volume 2? Whereas Volume 1 was dark, brooding, hard-hitting techno with a lot of period flavor and tremendous influence, Volume 3 is lackluster, ambiguous, middling techno that’s debilitatingly dated.

This was immensely frustrating to listen to, and I kept thinking he’d turn it around eventually, but front to back, every track is lame and occasionally even bad. And the tracks are still short, but unlike on Volume 1, where they were painfully short, here it’s a relief. They’re over and done with so quickly!

I gave this thing a second listen immediately because I was having a hard time believing the disparity between 1 and 3, but there it is. It’s honestly just such a disappointingly middling album and I’m probably wildly overreacting, so I’ll try and factor that into my rating. It’s so dated though, that I think it even drags down the rating of Volume 1. The Liquid Room DJ set rating shall remain 10/10 tho.

>SPK - Leichenschrei
So I understand this a bit of a meme? I can see why, I guess. It starts off all Faust I-like with the buzzing synthesizers and spoken word-ish vocals, but quickly ascends to its true industrial-noise planar form. This peaks on the tracks (I have the separated-out tracks version, not the Side A/Side B version) “Baby Blue Eyes” and “Israel” where a furious maelstrom of tribal drumming and searing harsh noise threaten me with one of the coolest things I have ever heard.

It’s a damn shame the album tapers off after that, retreating back to industrial dance music(?) and spoken word bits. The sex/rape noises on “Despair” and the incessant screaming on the following track, “The Agony of Plasma” are particularly unsavory, and readily assure me I will never get to show this otherwise awesome album to any of my friends.

The EDM-esque bits scattered throughout the album are particularly intriguing though. While I understand perfectly that by this time, 1982, disco was well under way and even dying in the mainstream, so this album loses any claims to electronic dance music primacy, it still seems very ahead of its time. With its unrelenting industrial atmosphere, it certainly predates techno and other now more ubiquitous forms of EDM, but it obviously lacks any element of the same commercial appeal. I also get the sense that SPK wasn’t quite aware that they struck gold with those EDM bits, as they pop up all too infrequently among the (admittedly also good) noise wank and depraved sampled spoken word segments.
>9/10

And here's all the ratings on the "freeform" chart. I also relistened to Memory & Money today and it's still an easy 9-10/10. I still struggle to determine, between SILY and M&M, if one is better than the other.

It was perhaps even more curious that nobody on RYM mentioned this aspect of the album. Maybe it's just another face of early industrial, and the industrial I'd heard up until now just never displayed it?

If anyone more knowledgeable in the ways of industrial could shed some light on this, that'd be appreciated.

> I Wonder If You Noticed "I'm Sorry" Is Such a Lovely Sound It Keeps Things From Getting Worse - Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke, Oren

Such a nice album. It goes right into the 2016 top 10. Nice vocals, Keiji is singing in english for the first time which is woah. Also I don't know how to write reviews so: nice drums. Some songs felt a bit empty tho.
