Friendly reminder: the kiddies who post in /gg/ threads have nearly ***zero*** experience concerning guitar. Playing, repair, new player recommendations, etc. The average age in these threads is around early 20s: green as shit grass.

If you have an actual question this is probably one of the most uninformed & least knowledgeable places you could ever expect a proper answer to come from.

Be weary of any advice given here as it's amateur & perfunctory at best.

Have a nice day.

Here's the type of SG I want. I'm a huge fan of Santana I grew up listening to Europa since my dad would play it a lot, plus the P90s are the only type of guitar pickup I don't have and it'll be nice to get something with more bite

Yea NZ bro he had the Beck mustang and we'd talk about it here sometimes. I was gunna build him a blonde telecaster like Yuyuki had on the show, I love the Orange too since it'll match my amps and it's a color you don't see everyday.

My new MIJ TUNE bass, they're not well known here but held in pretty high regards. New price is 200,000Yen, I got it for 350€ used. 2 Humbuckers, but they're very slim and the neck one is actually fairly close to the bridge side, impressive. Seems to be the case that sound quality on basses plateaus fairly quickly, this bass is really well built and a blast to play so I guess that's where the money goes.

In case you were wondering I just left the PU height the way the previous owner had it, and I'm pretty sure he didn't touch it.

So, I think I'm settled on a boss gt-5 for my effects, and a zoom g5n for my amp sim. It's pretty autistic but I can get a gt-5 for $100, and a g5n for $240 new, so it's still cheaper than a pod hd500x. I figure I'll wait until a g5n shows up cheap used. I think this'll get me a rock solid tone. The cool thing is I can put the zoom g5n in the boss effects loop to keep my reverb clean.

It's all a bit excessive but I like the idea of it, and the money sure isn't excessive. Plus, the zoom g5n has an 80 second looper, which is pretty nuts. Even better since the reverb can both go into and after the loop depending on my needs. If I can find something as good as the zoom, but for dedicated amp sim I'll go with that. >inb4 that's called an amplifier

>>
>>65449010
Wait, so you're just running this stuff into an amp sim on your computer?

If that's not what you're doing then disregard all of this, but you could just get an interface and then use VSTs to get pretty much whatever tone (although it will still sound like a guitar through a PC) and that'll end up being cheaper.
>>
>>65448969
Some tone deaf Fenderfag tried shitting on my tone in the last thread, what do you guys think? I hate to admit it but he got under my skin a little bit and I lost my cool and embarrassed myself.
>>
>>65448969
Try lowering the bass side of the neck pickup a tad, you might like it. Anyway not setting your pickup height is a horrible sin. You never know where that sweet spot is or the variety of tones you can get until you play with it.
>>
>>65449078
I don't like the sound of the third position but everything else sounds fine, I like the first position best, probably.

I guess I'm used to the sound of single coil bass pickups as well.

Nah, I want to use the g5n for the amp sim. I want to run to audio interface sometimes, amp fx return sometimes, and headphones sometimes. It'd be cheaper to use computer amp sims but my computer can't handle them and I wouldn't have the same portability.

I think computer is the best way for most people to use digital fx.

>it sounds perfect and I'm not touching it
ugh, you know they just set all the pickups to the same arbitrary height at the factory, right? Even Seymour Duncans have a variation of like 500k between pickups of the same model. The chance that it's really "perfect" to your ear is
pretty slim. It's not like you can't revert it later.

This just requires a screwdriver, it's not even a mod. It's like turning your volume knob. I mean, I'm not saying you should do this now or anything but there's no way you can say something's perfect until you exercise the full range of options.
>>
>>65449381
I just got through telling you I didn't want to touch it. Leave me alone about it, I don't want to do that.

Folkfag here. As a reference, I've got a strong repetoir of folk, easy classical and rock/post punk standards

Looking to branch into either jazz or blues next, but can't decide which rabbit hole to jump down.
I appreciate the rhythmic style of jazz more, but I'd honestly have to say I prefer the lead/melody styles of blues a bit more.
I could study just jazz rhythm and blues lead but I wouldn't really be doing either justice, then.

Where do you think I should go next, /gg/?

ignore these weird internet people and just do whatever you want, literally. I've had bandmates who go into steve vai mode and want to understand their instruments more, and i respect it, but i could tell that something was wrong with the guitar the next time we played together, and i believe i even heard the strings making contact with a pickup a few times which obviously isn't on.

All i know is he was going on about setting it up. Pissed me off because we didn't get asked back to that venue.

you're not autistic, you're just not obsessive to the point of ruining the sound of an instrument when you know it sounds fine the way you purchased it.

Is that a decent price for this? 500 cad for a strat seems decent, but it's a partscaster so I'm a little weary. I've heard horror stories about those bodies but I'm not really well informed on anything specific about them

No friend. Im a guitar player who happened to have jammed on a rumble with a mexican pbass this afternoon at guitarcenter and found it pleasing. I personally find overdriven or distorted bass distasteful. I jusy imagined the rumble to be a terrific bargain and figured one could round out his sound with pedals.

Probably go for a peavey or something and get pedals as others suggested. A nice clean amp is much more valuable to a bassist these days than a complex drive, since you can get drive pedals, but not clean/definition pedals!

I'm no expert on pedals, but a lot of bass players like the distortion in the high end, while maintaining the low end. That's a pretty easy sound to use, since you can dial the effect back and forth without having to change much on the amp. An unconventional choice that actually results in a pretty conventional tone is the boss bd-2.

Anyways, watch lots of videos. Here's a good one: https://youtu.be/eIyTYV5u27E

I don't think your setup can change the acoustic sound of your instrument other than buzz. In any case a tech or luthier won't consider the acoustic sound when doing a setup, they'll just worry about the measurements/buzz.

pleb question coming through

I've been playing bass for almost half a year now and I've decided to pick up guitar and I have no clue what I'm doing. Should I just learn some chords and go from there?
>>
>>65451185
Sure, not a bad place to start if you already play bass. Don't sweat it to much, when you already know bass you don't need to be that strict about learning guitar. There's lots of mays to play a bass right, but there's TONS of ways to play a guitar right. Just try to learn a bunch or chords for now. Then learn CAGED. right hand technique as needed throughout.

Bridge position will affect intonation, string tension (could be using shit strings for it), whether the nut is cut properly, etc. He'll be able to take a much more educated look at the fiddly bits that affect tone.
>>
>>65451924
I dunno if this advice is really helpful, but setting intonation is the easy part, hopefully if you get that right all should be well from a tone standpoint. A basic tuner is enough to set your intonation, even a cell phone tuner in a pinch. If you are tuned to E and your intonation is set there's not going to be significant variation in tension, which is simply a matter of string length, gauge, and pitch. Tension on the bridge doesn't affect the tone unless it's low enough to cause buzz at the saddles. This is rare but easily diagnosable.

The only thing that bothers me is that in some of the pores you can sort of see the white residue from the wax. I disagree with your assertion that string tension has little if any effect on tone. It affects resonance coming from the bridge and thus affects tone. Where I'm sticky on that matter is moreso how the scale length of that particular guitar plays with the strings I'm using. Feels fine, but archtops are different beasts to what Im used to

Anyone have experiences running VSTs for live rigs? I have been thinking about building a Scarlett 2i2 into my laptop as a live rig, currently I use a zoom g5 as a interface, it manages 64 buffer size well enough but sometimes there are hiccups.

It's not dark sounding. It's as if it's not picking up as much sound as it should compared to the other pickup. I'm afraid I don't know the wiring scheme since I got this guitar off craigslist. These are supposed to be American installed pickups on a mim telecaster.

>>
>>65454035
Do you have a multimeter? Well, not that it changes what you need to do. You need to lower the bridge pickup. You can do that by turning the three mounting screws counter clockwise. Do this with the strings on so you can keep checking the balance of the pickups. Once you've got the pickups balanced, use the same screws to balance the bass and treble strings approximately. This doesn't have to be exact. You can do it by ear, or if you'd rather, just by eyeballing it and making the pickup level.
>>
>>65454136
Oh, also, when you put the neck pickup back in, make sure it's a decent height. It's fine to approximate this. You want it to have some clearance from the strings to make sure it's not going to come into contact with them while playing. Some people like to put it even lower to avoid string pull from the magnets and get a cleaner tone. I wouldn't worry about that though.

>>65454531
If it were me I would run two cabinets (maybe even two amps) a regular 2x12 and a 1x15 for bassier sound. A 70s Fender head is what I would look for first, bassman ideally.

This will give you good range and definition if you want to include "bassier" sounds since you'll be lacking a bassist.

I was asking you guys about pickups for my strat yesterday and this seems like the best arrangement to me. Does this make sense? I found a HH Phat Cat strat demo on youtube that sounded pretty close to what I'm going for and the middle position seems good for a lipstick since that's roughly where Danelectro puts them on the U1.

Also will I have to do any routing? It's a 2002 Standard MIM and I don't really want to disassemble it right now. This is just for whenever I have the money.

Nice tone, that's good enough for a year. You're getting a grasp of improvising in scales, only suggestion I would have is to try to make your playing more rhythmic, right now it's like you're just playing the notes to play them.

>>
>>65455957
Your biggest issue is inconsistent string muting - lots of things are ringing out when they shouldn't be. Also try to work in some bends and vibrato, it all sounds really flat and awkward when it's completely devoid of it

All in all, not a bad starting point for learning to improvise. Try playing along to backing tracks to get a better feel of how your rhythms and melodies could work in the context of a song

Thanks, if only I knew what I was doing

>>65456219
Yea, it turns out $200 (aus) bullet strats sound pretty decent, and for me at the time I liked how I placed each note in most cases, but yea, it doesn't sound very rhythmic, I wasn't really going for a rhythmic thing this time, I was kind of just trying something new, and I liked it although I think I need to improve in this style a lot more.

>>65456618
>Your biggest issue is inconsistent string muting
Yea, thanks for that, I knew there was something wrong with my playing at times I didn't quite know what. And as for bend and vibrato, I didn't feel like putting in any bends and vibratos mainly because I use them a lot when, like I said to the earlier post, I play more rhythmically styled things. In retrospect it does sound slightly stale without them. I was mainly playing around with kind of more of a classical styled thing for this one. I usually do more blues styled things but I felt as thought I was anchoring my playing too heavily in blues and therefore using that style as a crutch.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

It depends. Google your favorite guitar players' rigs. Usually a good tube amp that's boosted by a Tubescreamer for instance. For cleans it's reverb, delay, chorus (or another modulation) and maybe compression

Look up vocal exercises and warmups, and actually do them, every day. Improving on vocals is almost 100% physical, but you do need to be able to figure out things to work on in isolation.

Sing as much as possible. It can be embarrassing, but sing loudly and enunciate when you practice. I'm not a great singer but I practice a lot. I'd say something you can start work on right away is work on controlling your head/chest voice.

Nah, he does it arbitrarily.
For example the first time he mutes the first few notes but then lets the highers ring, second time he kinda mutes them all besides one or two that he might let ring a bit, and so on.

I learned it a long time after I was already a somewhat ok player, but it you're just starting (or if the riff is giving you trouble, which happens sometimes) I'd say first focus on the groove, then focus on the muting.
Or be really clinical about it, and learn bar by bar. First bar until you have it perfect, then bar one and two until perfect, and so on. Slowly and then catch up.
I'd say that after getting the groove down the song just comes naturally, it's just a blues riff in C, although dunno where the G# comes from (though it sounds pretty cool).

Either Vintage Modified really retain value, or everyone thinks they have a piece of history in their hands because I can't find one well priced (used).
Jazzmaster for 280 and Mustang for 290.
New they are not much more.
Also between a jazzmaster and a mustang which one would you prefer? I play jazz standards, pretty much all kinds of metal (I'm thinking it'd be kinda cute to play lack of comprehension on a mustang), and standard dadrock stuff like fleetwood mac, blondie, rush.
Both are in their standard colours and configuration, mustang is red, jazz is sunburst.

The screwdriver is gimmicky but the onboard disto seems pretty neat. I like the teisco look, and the blue pickguard makes it even better.

The onboard distortion will be...interesting. It's an old soviet model so the electronics are garbage and from what I heard the distortion requires the 5pin jack, as it uses it as a Phantom power source, so I won't be able to change out the input jack.

That being said, most if the info about it is in Russian and I only took 3 years of uni Russian so I'm skeptical of my translation skills.

apparently it's a univox body + fender neck + fender pickups
might be a great deal, go try it out
>>
>>65462379
Try alvarez guitars if you have the chance. They're not cheap though. >>65462667 is right.

Threadly Reminder

Do you guys like visiting your local music store? How are the staff? Knowledgeable?
Do you have good retail stores that aren't large chain stores?

Do you prefer just shopping online?

Every person's different, I tried playing high 6 months after starting guitar and all we did was some really bad, uncoordinated sludge kind of thing.

>Do you guys like visiting your local music store?
They've got a decent amount of guitars you can try, I love going there.

>How are the staff? Knowledgeable?
Absolutely not for some. Went there to buy some 10-48, dude thought it didn't exist. It was right behind him. Thankfully they're quite friendly.

>Do you have good retail stores that aren't large chain stores?
The store I'm talking about's rather known in the area but they have only one shop. They also ship rather quickly or you can order online and pick it up at the store, which is really handy in case you want something specific.

Otherwise there's another store in town, but apparently the owner's a complete ass, a friend went there to try a 500€ bass head, it was listed for 900€, and when he asked why it was that high, the owner just replied "well you'll buy it online then". He then asked if he could try it, and the owner replied "well you'll try it online". Seems like a complete ass.

>Do you guys like visiting your local music store?
no. everything's overpriced. you can't return stuff once you buy it unless it's broken (good luck proving it's broken, too). the guitars are usually shit.

>How are the staff? Knowledgeable?
dull and uninformed. looks like they don't pay much.

>Do you have good retail stores that aren't large chain stores?
no. all i have is craigslist-like websites. i deal with people who sell used stuff and that's where all my gear comes from.

>Do you just prefer shopping online?
i have to pay like 60% tax and the shipping rates and prices are crazy so it's not really an option

just fuck my shit straight up fampai

>the amp is more important than the guitar when it comes to how you sound.
This really depends on the amp. The more an amp colors the tone, the less the guitar matters. If your amp is a poweramp into studio monitors, it's pretty safe to say the guitar makes more difference than which poweramp you use.

Mostly this applies to how much gain you use but lots of tube amps color the clean tone a lot too.

Looks interesting, congrats

Just replace the jack and take out the distortion.
>>
>>65462749
Selection's pretty bad in my city, so I don't go often. There used to be one place where I at least liked to check things out and pick up strings, but they shut down a month or two ago. Damn shame, the staff there was some of the nicest people I've ever met.
>>
>>65463048
Great choice. Never sell it. Hell, never buy another guitar, you're done. Just throw in a lipstick or something down the line to cover sweet strat territory a little better.

>>65463413
Later on, when you feel like you want more variety(which with that guitar should be a long time) add a lipstick tube pickup. They have a unique character that pairs well with anything, and solo has a sweet single coil flavor that goes beyond a strat. They have a very vintage tone so their shortcomings are really well compensated for by the p90 and humbucker.
>>65463590
Nope, I'm dead serious. There's no reason to ever upgrade from that guitar.
>>
What's the difference between Jazzmasters and Jaguars, apart from the jag's short scale, switches, and pickup configuration?

>>65463756

That's the only difference. It's not like there's any differences you can't see.

but the yamaha pacifica is the very best beginner guitar there is, that's true

>Do you guys like visiting your local music store? How are the staff? Knowledgeable?
The store, yes actually. Fairly wide variety of stuff and soundproof chambers with different amps and cabs. The staff are assholes though and unwilling to help you. They're also supposed to sell you up on stupid bullshit and to trick newcomers into buying snakeoil. I just go there to test stuff out.
>Do you have good retail stores that aren't large chain stores?
Yes, a few small stores that specialize in setups/repairs, proper luthiers, some small second hand shops with interesting vintage stuff, etc.
>Do you prefer just shopping online?
Yes, once I know what I want I'll just order it online.
>>
>>65463829
I'm not being sarcastic. I wouldn't take a joke this far, it'd be beating a dead horse. If he ever finds the playability lacking he can get it leveled and dressed. There really is no reason to buy another guitar. I understand buying more guitars for more variety, but that guitar's got so much variety you don't really need to, you can just add a pickup.

There's plenty of jazz written around 12 bar blues or blues based progressions, just jazz players tend to add some odd chord changes and embellishments.

The rhythm side of jazz would also give a nice twist to a possibly cliched/bland blues solo.
