Do you like poetry and classic literature?
Start by reading as much as you can of the old masters. (Ok, just start with one poetry compilation book. I think the first one I read was called something like American Anthology Of Poetry. Or something like that.)
When singing, you will be using poetic license a whole lot to stretch a rhyme or cut down a long bit of prose into something that kind of rhymes.
Also listen to classic rock and roll a whole bunch, if you like rock and roll.
When you write, write from the heart. AKA Write what you know. Go out and live a little to keep your moral and interest up.
