this guy has one of the most beautiful voices i've ever heard on a pop record t b h
>>
>>65411106
Please don't discuss REM here, I don't want them to be ruined by this god forsaken board.
>>
>>65411131
Dude, /mu/ loves REM. I've never seen anybody dislike Murmur and even Automatic gets a fair bit of love (you would think /mu/ would instantly deride it as adult contemporary bullshit or something).

enjoy anon
>>
>>65411151
I rarely see them discussed on here desu, and generally it's a thread with only a few replies.
>>
>>65411106
what album did you choose to start with

>>65411151
i love rem and i only like half of automatic
monster is very underrated though
>>
REM are deity-tier college rock/pop, I agree. Monster was the first record I ever got. I wonder what Stipe is doing these days.
>>
>>65411192
thanks, this is cool

>>65411217
automatic for the people. found a cd of it hanging around the house so i put it on. it's poppy but very pretty, particularly liked "sidewinder"
>>
The first time I decided I had to listen to more REM was when I was in my dad's car, and he had a playlist on shuffle, and Radio Free Europe came up. I pretty much immediately asked him who it was by, and I bought a copy of Murmur before the week was over. Still my favorite album ever, though Fables challenges it for that spot sometimes.

However, I also think Losing My Religion is their best song.
>>
The only R.E.M. song I've heard is Losing My Religion. How should I go about remedying this?
>>
>>65411635
did you like losing my religion? if so what did you like about it
if you didn't like it, start with murmur and you'll probably want to stop after document
>>
>>65411667
>did you like losing my religion
how does one not like that song
>>
>>65411635
Start from Murmur and just keep going. The worst R.E.M. album is Around the Sun and even that's got songs worth listening to.
>>
>>65411692
i don't have a clue, but i had to keep the possibility in mind
>>
>>65411717
This is good advice

Every time I seem REM discussed here, it's usually people who really love them.
>>
>>65411219
He spends his time in NY riding around on a scooter with celebrity chef Mario Batali.

No, I'm actually serious. They've got this cute bromance thing going on where they ride around together, cook, eat, and listen to rock.

Do not start from Murmur, start from Documents/Green/Automatic.

I've seen them live 3 times. It was amazing how they played brand new to very old songs, always keeping a smooth sound.
>>
>>65411934
This is amazing. Thank you. Michael is such a qt.
>>
>>65411667
>>65411692
I did like it, yes. No particular reason that I can recall.

>>65411717
Thanks for the tip anon
>>
Around The Sun is not their worst album, it is quite slow and sad (post 11/9) but there are amazing balaldas in it (Boy in the Well).

The last 2 albums are much worst, pathetic loud rock by 50 years old.
>>
>>65412217
>Boy in the Well
I agree that's my favorite track from Around the Sun.
I thought Collapse into Now was a great end to their career though
>>
>>65412217
>collapse into now
>much worse than
>around the sun

da fuq?
>>
>>65411934
Ugh so he's not straight

That explains a lot, thanks for the info
>>
>>65412217
Yes, this is my opinion. REM are great because of the slow/mid-tempo minor key songs, not because of generic indie pop rock.
>>
>>65412446
This.

>tfw
>try not to breath
>at my most beautiful
>nightswimming
>fall on me
>half a world away
>>
>>65411217
>monster is very underrated though
Monster's an odd album. I think part of the problem with its reputation is that it came immediately after Automatic. Automatic was an 11/10 masterpiece, so they were pretty much setting themselves up for failure with anything else. And like others have said in this thread, their slower ballads were gaining them popularity, and Monster was a much more straight forward rock album than anything else they'd done.
>>
>>65411692
I don't dislike it, but I think it's an overrated song ****for REM's discography.****

If any other band had done it, it could've been their greatest song over. But REM has so many fucking amazing tracks that I think it probably doesn't even make my top 10. Maybe top 20.
>>
>>65412371
>Ugh so he's not straight
...? Really? You didn't know that?
>>
listening to r.e.m. makes me feel good
>>
>>65413087
I actually did not.

REM has a huge cult in US because of the college radio. But outside of it? Mostly famous for "Losing my Religion". That's about it.
>>
>>65413138
>I actually did not.
Yeah, he's always been sorta like David Bowie with his sexuality. Always vaguely bi, depending on his mood. During the late 90's and early 2000's he started performing in dresses with elaborate makeup.
>>
>>65413138
my man R.E.M. is one of the best selling bands of all time
they've sold 85 million records, they're hardly cult status
>>
>>65413109
I like when these threads pop up every once in a while because it reminds me to listen to them. Every time I'm reminded of how fucking amazing they were.
>>
>>65413230
word, R.E.M. has a great fanbase here
>>
>>65413228
Living in Russia never really cared about them for some reason. Looks like they were popular in UK though, maybe the singer's sexual ambiguity played a role for their lack of popularity in my country.
>>
>>65413138
Starting with Out of Time, every single album they released until they broke up started out charting extremely high, usually at No. 1, in every single major market. They are one of the biggest international bands of all time. If you look at their average international chart positions for the 90's and 2000's, they're just below U2.
>>
>>65413369
Yeah, just learned about that now… Weird.

You see, as I said I'm from Russia, and here the market usually copies the UK tastes, for the most part. But I've heard maybe 1 or 2 REM songs in my life before I got into music and learned how much praise they get. Few people know REM here and even fewer like them, which, as I said, is kinda surprising.
>>
>>65413306
>implying russia has any bearing on an artists international popularity
>implying any artist cares about selling albums in russia

Stay gloomy, comrade.
>>
>>65413433
That's your mission: Educate the Russian people about REM.

I'm actually surprised that they're so much of a non-entity in Russia, since they're huge in Germany. I know Germany and Russia have a lot of cultural differences, but I think their similarities being kind of overly dark and serious would give them similar music tastes.
>>
>>65413462
What? I implied neither of those things. Russia is a neck of the woods musically, no one ever gave a fuck about Russia except for very few "big in Japan" acts.
>>
The Smiths are objectively superior in every way to R.E.M. (except longevity and quantity obviously)
>>
>>65413433
You know, I think part of their appeal in the US, especially initially, was how counter-cultural they were. They started out gaining popularity in the early to mid-80's, when the Soviet Union was still in full swing. Countercultural American music probably wouldn't go over big there.

So by the time the USSR collapsed, REM was already massively huge in America, and Russia had essentially missed the boat. I guess part of being in to REM was being here when they were rising to become the huge band they were. The transition between the late 80's and early 90's was massive for them, and Russia probably just had a lot of other things to deal with at that time.
>>
>>65413535
Cool troll, bro. I can't wait until you reply to this post trying to argue that it's true.
>nuh uh! i'm not trolling! the smiths are better! waaaah!
>>
>>65413535
the two are beyond comparison imo
>>
>>65413503
> they're huge in Germany
They are?… Weird.

Russian music taste is a little weird really. E.g., Stairway to Heaven is virtually never played on radio here, any station. Bands like Rush simply don't exist here.

My guess is that they aren't popular here because they play sad depressed US folk. We already have an over-saturation of the market of sad depressed Russian folk here.

>>65413563
I never really got how REM was countercultural. No loud guitars, no wild vocals. Just sad music to drink vodka to
>>
Hot opinion: Up and Reveal are 7-8/10 albums.
>>
>>65413663
What western music is big there?

>>65413687
I think Up is their strongest post-Automatic album. I'm completely okay with rating it at least 7.5. "Daysleeper" is one of my all-time favorite REM tracks.
>>
Any fans of Guadalcanal Diary in here? They're kinda similar to REM in my opinion
>>
>>65413815
Well, old top-40 stuff from UK and universally popular artists like Queen, AC/DC, Sting and so on. Metal has big following, e.g. Iron Maiden. Indie is non-existent here except with a fraction of younger auditory. Alternative had some following but now it's mostly shit metal and post hardcore.
>>
harborcoat is one of the comfiest tracks of all time
>>
>>65411667
>stop after Document
Don't listen to this.
>>
>>65413994
Reckoning is one of the comfiest albums. Camera is the comfiest on there.
>>
why is fables so underrated? second best irs album but nobody talks about it that much

>>65413922
i liked standing in the shadow of the big man and for some reason i have a different one of their albums on cd and have never listened to it

>>65414046
that was if they didn't like losing my religion
if you don't like that song, you probably won't like their major label years
