Picking up Renoise, reading the manual and digging it so far.

Drawing waveforms and adding effects like chorus and distortion actually sound like I want them to, unlike other DAWs I've tried in the past.

Any tips or things I should know or will I be good with just the manual?

Lol what? With the price of storage these days you have no reason not to get at least a 128 SSD. Actually no, you have no reason not to get a 256 SSD. I mean, a 3TB hard drive costs less than $100, what the fuck man?

For lyrics you have to read and write. And not just lyrics, you have to read actual books. Poetry, you know. Check out William Blake (mind-forg'd manacles), T. S. Eliot (women come and go) and Emily Dickinson (a funeral in my head) for starters.

But most obviously, you have to learn your genre. Trance requires quite a different approach from country, for example. Learn the clichés and mannerisms.

Most importantly, write. And write constantly, every day.

Anyone here use Reaper? I'm new to it but I've loved how well it's worked with EZ Drummer and how quick writing drum parts has been. I'm currently shopping around for audio interfaces (looking for mic connection, as recording from amp-mic), and I keep hearing of people having trouble making some of the better known brands like the Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 working with it. It sounds fine-ish to me. But honestly at this point, you could make a tighter organ riff using one of the various B3 emulations (even vintage organ if you have logic). Give you a bit more control over the thing. I like the tune though, sounds good.
>>
>>65399777
This sounds like its from a spaghetti western on Venus. I would have liked to hear you use some filter automation on that synth riff, could help you transition it. Even something simple like a lowpass filter slowly crawling down until it disappears. Or some automation on a reverb send when you are about to drop the synth out- so it leaves behind a nice trail. Something more than just "oh now its gone". In fact there are a few other parts that give me that impression. You are great at making some cool ambient sound design-y elements, create some to pad your transitions that let the listener know that something is about to arrive or disappear.

Add more reverb to the buzzing/whirring sound as it lacks depth. Also play around with the compression/volume because the entire mix sounds like shit.

So /mu/, is anyone interested with this idea: Someone uploads a raw ableton file (or whatever, i just assume most people here use ableton) and /prod/ mixes the song then uploads it to clyp. Needs more melodic interest. The Arpeggios sound, well, generic and uninteresting.

In electronic music they are most often used to help establish the key/mode of the song, for example when the bass goes on wild wobble rides in DnB or Dubstep. On their own they sound boring.

Add a bassline.
Add more prominent drums.
Add melodic elements.
>>
>>65392203
>https://clyp.it/2yjfc4lp
The lead piano is too "stabby" and adds a percussive element, clashing with the transients of the drums. The chord piano also needs more sustain.

You may think that the organ sample feels forced because it is the only other element except the vocals that is not always there. Add another element to flipflop between that and the organ (call and response style), and it would sit better.

If those are to be the only vocals, then in my opinion they need to be more prominent in the mix. At the moment they have some kind of background vocal feel.
>>
>>65394318
Pretty good, except for the montone "toot" every bar after the intro. That gives me nothing and annoyed me after a while.

Maybe modulate it a bit with filters over the course of the track to make it more interesting, or make it follow the root note of the chords, or put it a bit in the background of the mix with more reverb.

So I don't know if it's just my imagination speaking, or if I have been working on the same track for too long, but I felt like there is some unused degrees of stereo, although I'm doing everything I can to widen the shit out of anything that should be widen, like the bass or the main background rythm synth.

Can someone give me tips on Mastering/Mixing to get wider instruments ? Or if my track ACTUALLY lacks depth ?

I'd brighten the drums a little, with maybe a little amount of reverb (short reverb decay time) to give them some space without turning them into stadium drums.

The reverb alone might be enough to lift the drums but failing that some exciter on the higher frequencies will give your snare some more bite and will help pull the toms a little further to the front too without increasing their level too much - they sound a little sunk back right now.
>>
How do you guys feel about iPad analog synth reproductions? Like Arturia's iMini & iSEM or the iVCS3?

I was listening to Computer Magic's Davos album and I really enjoyed the synths. They are so deep and alive and it got me thinking how she and her crew did it.

One of the synths was very old and expensive. I'm asking why not just use software synths? What makes hardware synths so attractive. Is it very difficult to get similar sounds out of a typical computer?

I know there are emulator synths out there. And I've seen how crazy it is to develop an emulator synth. But I'm talking like brand new from scratch instead.

Thanks!

>Computer Magic's Davos
I wasn't familiar with this group, so I checked it out. Here's the good news. It sounds like their sound very much is built around a 80s synth pop foundation (not saying that is their exact genre).

The synths that fueled that era and sound are mostly first or second generation digital synths, with some exceptions. Digital was the new hotness and you had oddballs like the Yamaha DX7, These are probably the easiest to emulate or imitate with modern software.

I'm also hearing some analog synths, probably Moogs (a lot of these basslines), maybe ARP odyssey, etc.

A lot of what differentiates analog hardware synths from their software counterparts are: chiefly the limitations imposed by their circuit design, the oscillators, the filters. These all have a profound impact on the way they sound, and what patches you can construct. Its hard to perfectly emulate analog synths in software, but in many cases you can get "close enough". There is no denying that the degrees of freedom of software synths blows analog synths out of the water (especially the keyboards). One exception being the large modular synths, the sheer number of experimental and oddball modules can certainly push into "unique" territory. But that's not exactly the point. It becomes a question of novelty, does this synth have a novel tone or character, is it a character you HAVE TO HAVE in your song, or isn't it. Sometimes a digital synth is the right one for the job, sometimes a analog synths is the right one for the job.

That's not to say there's not plenty of instances where its hard to tell the difference between analog and digital software synths. There are. But you can also listen to some Roger Troutman or George Duke and KNOW its a moog or an ARP just from hearing the thing.

At the end of the day, all synths have utility, so long as they bring a degree of novelty and character. Whether its an analog modeling soft synth like Diva, or a roland SH-101.

Not a fan of the chipmunk voices but that's a style people like so not really a negative.

I thought the bass was maybe too intense/compressed? I could feel my ear drums moving on normal listening volumes. It wasn't painful but not comfortable either. I think it should be a little bit less intense since the rest of the track is more smooth/mellow.

I don't know anything about music production so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

>>
>>65419385
alright so there's a knob that you set your gain with right... pick up less or more, quieter or louder smaller or bigger waveform. if it's too loud your recording distorts. too little gain and you can't hear it though. when you record there's an idea volume you want to be hitting with room for dynamics.

thing is with the scarletts is that there's not very much room for variation in volume. as soon as you can hear yourself, if you get a little louder, your recording distorts and you gotta throw it out. the 2i4 has a pad that prevents that i believe but for the same money you could be getting something different without that issue.

you'll hear a lot of people praising the preamps as being "solid" and whatnot but they're weak and comparatively muddy. i mean they are usable if you come across one very cheap it's just there's better out there like the ur22. if you choose to get one stay away from mics that need a lot of gain like the sm57 (you'll be recommended that a lot too) if you plan on plugging in direct... yeah get something else

What flute library? Because many of them use keyswitches to change articulations, and that would solve your problem in a relatively elegant way. If you are using Orchestral Tools Berlin Woodwinds, then you are sorta SOL, because each articulation is separated into a different instrument. What I do (in the case of BWW) is load all the Flutes into one kontakt instrument, and give each their own midi channel.

hey I'm looking for a video that was posted here a while ago of some dude in the studio doing interpolations of full songs anybody knows what I'm talking about? already tried looking for it in the archive
>>
>>65428096
Yep. I have a few folders just filled with synths and bass hits and such that I've made over the years. My workflow is very kontakt-heavy, and I use it much like you would a synth, due to its outstanding modulation capabilities.

What I'll do for dnb basslines, for instance is 'mine' my soft synths for raw, gnarly oscillating tones. Usually pre-filtering. The idea is, you load these guys into kontakt and kontakt does everything filtering and modulation related.

Essentially, using kontakt like a synth, except the difference is you are outsourcing the 'oscillators' to tones from various synths. So basically I have a big ass folder of interesting tones for later manipulation in kontakt.

For percussion, my created samples are usually the product of layering the best bits of various samples, but I have synthesized some simpler stuff like kicks.

>>
>>65428096
recording your own can be cool... resampling from random chaos you make makes sense to me... actually synthesizing kicks is meh. at least not from scratch.

i've only used operator to make a kick once. maybe little bleeps zippy noise and things could be useful but i think doing all your hits is kind of a waste of time... maybe if you need something you can't find elsewhere but otherwise eh.

You gotta ditch these canned loops. They weren't designed with each-other in mind, and it shows. Just when I think we are going to carry on the theme and progress it, we jump to something unrelated.

I can tell you have an ear for what sounds good, but your 20 minute exercise sounds like a 20 minute exercise. Tell me what you are working with here. DAW and nothing else? What are your resources? What tools do you have at your disposal?

I only had GarageBand, I'm still downloading FL Studio (slow net connection here) so I thought I would give it a try before going into FL. But yeah, I see your point. I'm going to try gathering some other samples as well.

I wanted to try doing basic things first, but I also want to do some Nujabes-style things.

>>65428697
Yeah, I'll practice more.
>>
>>65428678
ok thats what i thought. you should stop playing around with that because its not going to teach you anything. download a real DAW like FL or ableton and learn to use them. it may be overwhelming at first but it is what it is. i dont know what kind of hardware you have or what instruments you can play but you can write music easily in both especially FL. watch youtube videos and download a lot of instruments and stuff. listen to some of your favorite music and try to replicate some of the sounds they make if you want. i dont know what kind of music you want to make either.
>>
>>65428732
Alright, thanks anon. Still waiting for FL Studio to finish downloading so I can try it out.
>>
>>65428721
It will take time to develop a thoughtful approach to sampling. You are starting from 0, like everyone does. I'm not the expert on Nujabes. But I know this is an artist, similar to flying lotus, in that they sort of attempt to advance the approach to sampling that 90s hip hop pioneered.

Whats in a sample? My pretentious coffee shop hipster answer would be that a sampled drum break (think: James brown funky drummer), or a sampled bass guitar from some old record represents a historical archive of both performance styles, and recording tech through time.

The guys like Nujabes are somewhere between creating a collage of sampled music and entirely new, novel creations.

If you plotted the musical elements sampled in Nujabes, Flying lotus, J dilla, etc, you would see a dense cluster in the 70s, with less hits sprawling out before and after that chunk of time. But really, this is more representative of the vibe and character that the artists were chasing. The drums from a 1975 funk record just sound different (1-3 mics, tape, analog desk) than those recorded with modern (shit loads of mics, careful corrective EQ, extremely high end converters) techniques The drums, the instrumentation, and the recording methods from each decade are unique, and where you sample absolutely has an influence on how your tunes will sound. Don't just sample 1972 soul because so and so does, sample whatever resonates with you. All of these guys, whether its dr. dre or j dilla or whoever, have a profound knowledge of music. To be a crate digger, a sample hunter, you have to.

This is sort of a DRUNK ramble, but basically, You won't know what the fuck you are doing for awhile, and you won't know what your sound is for awhile yet. You discover it. Explore whosampled.com and learn how your favorite artists have used samples to capture vibes in their tunes. And recognize why this is intrinsically different than using Guitar_Gminor_Loop5.wav from garageband.
>>
>>65429010
Thanks anon, this is really useful. I don't really play any instruments as of now (reasons), so I've always thought about sampling instead. The website you gave me will really help. Hopefully I can make worthy music once I've learned.
>>
>>65429070
The most relevant thing that a proper DAW will bring you is something called a sampler, which lets you manipulate sound files. The simplest example of what a sampler may do is let you play a recorded single note on a piano at different pitches (no doubt you are familiar with this concept), but its capability extends far, far beyond this. Most DAWs (fruity loops, ableton, Logic, whatever) have a half-way decent sampler built in, that has this functionality and a whole lot more. It will take a lot of time to really wrap your head around the full feature set.

But the end product is, sound files become your instrument. They can be manipulated in ways that can make it impossible to recognize the original source, or slight creative changes, and somewhere in between.

Once you have gotten a DAW to play with, learn about the functions of the sampler it came with, and try to research related topics it leads you to.

Personally I'm totally on board with this. Subject matter: could have been better. It has sampling potential. Not sure if its enough on its own. I imagine you on a trajectory that leads you to audio / visual sampling.
