This is good; the beautiful and subtle nuances you'd expect in minimalist music are there, but they are a little sparse due to the pattern of repetition. Because of this the music can feel slightly like a chore at some times. Good overall though

I'm listening to Sung Tongs and trying to realise what my overall feelings on Animal Collective are.
When I talk about Animal Collective hear, please note that I'm talking about the band up to 2004, since I'm not experienced with them after that point.
What I'm really thinking is – what is the point of Animal Collective's music? From the albums I have heard from them, I can't discern any objective or aim in their music.
It doesn't seem to strive to be "nice to listen to" (in the way that Kind of Blue is, or a lot of impressionism, or The Beatles). I'm fine with that, since a lot of music I enjoy (noise, drone, death metal) isn't particularly "nice" to listen to. But when a piece of music isn't pleasant to listen to, it redeems itself with interesting experimentation, catharsis or by some other means. Animal Collective, particularly in Sung Tongs because that's what I'm listening to right now, don't seem to have any of these means.
Fair enough, there is some experimentation – "Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished" (their best for me) and "Sung Tongs" include short snippets of noise –but the way the band includes these passages makes it seem like an afterthought to please the avant-garde audience or something. They seem much more comfortable with strumming a guitar and playing around with falsetto vocal melodies, which would be fine ... only it isn't when they do it.
>>65380490
No matter how many times I listen to an early Animal Collective album, I struggle to assign some sort of theme or feeling to it, in the way the "In the Court of the Crimson King" is paranoid yet majestic, or "A Love Supreme" is religious and reverent. This is because all of these early Animal Collective albums seem to consist, for the most part, of messing around on a guitar and dribbling vocal melodies atop of it, with the addition of some noise and some long tracks to seem more "experimental".
Perhaps a fan would justify this lack of direction in their albums by saying it is a technique similar to ambient music. In that case, it is sometimes achieved (on the track "Visiting Friends" for example), but always falls down because of how boring it is done –just as ambient music often falls down in the same way. There is a reason "Music For Airports" is more influential than a paulstretched piano chord sequence.
So yeah, I don't really like Animal Collective (up to 2004). I have a feeling I might like "Merriweather Post Pavilion" though, from hearing the track My Girls.

>Archie Shepp & Niels Pedersen - Looking at Birds
>jazz
Now this is rainy mood jazz. The kind of of soft and smooth jazz that you put on with some scotch on a rainy late afternoon.
The instrumentation is a little odd and minimum, with only the sax (Archie) and bass (Niels) being used. No drums, no piano, it works supremely though. It's warm and spacious, two masters exploring, playing off each other, and give each other their moment to shine with great solo's. The project as whole ends being a very rewarding experience, I'm sure for both the artists and the listeners.

>fishmans - uchu nippon setagaya
really relaxing, steady, long and winding stuff. absolutely love the sense of buildup and progression, pretty much exactly what i wanted from fishmans after listening to long season, except a bit more sleepy (which i personally like). as i mentioned before, this record is going straight to my "late-night city drive home" collection. vs. kuchu camp, i definitely like this record better, considering kuchu camp already grew off me a slight bit. both are still going to be in my rotation for a while, and i'm pretty excited to explore more fishmans.
>sonic youth - daydream nation
pretty damn good rocking stuff, i can see myself jamming out to this for a while to come. consistently banging and exciting. i found it to be a bit overlong though, as i got kind of tired of its sound by the end of it. however, when that's the only complaint i really have, i can tell this record did something right. might grow on me with more spins.

Oh man I am garbage.
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
I'm ashamed of myself. Why am I ashamed of myself you might ask? Well, I dropped this. Sorry.
My reasons for dropping this are simple and stupid. First, the songwriting to me was kinda uninspired and didn't really make me think "Oh wow nice melodies" or some crap like that. Second, this stuff goes on for 1 hour? I'm sorry but I just don't know if I can listen to this for too long. Third, the playing sounded a bit lazy to me and sometimes lazy playing can be okay but it was just not enjoyable here.
What I've heard from this was just okay in my book and I really didn't want to listen to okay music for an hour so there. However, I may revisit this someday if I'm in the mood. Sorry for dropping an album again like a pleb. Dropped/5.
And now for a """"""""""review"""""""""" from the film section of my calendar.
Warning: Possible spoilers ahead(?)
Wong Kar-wai - In the Mood for Love
Very good film. Like in Kar-wai's other film Chungking Express (one of my favorite films), we see a tale of love presented in a great looking way by Kari-wai and his crew. To me, this was not on the level of Chungking Express but was still very good.
Of course, the film looks absolutely wonderful. Wong Kar-wai and Christopher Doyle are an excellent team when it comes to making a film look bloody great. They did it with Chungking Express and they did it here. I absolutely love how color is used in both films and the way some scenes are shot. Excellent job here as expected.
The plot here was interesting. The story took a bunch of twists and turns with love and chance and then hits hard with that ending. It is a sad tale and is told well.
The choice of music was nice. The recurring main theme of the film was enjoyable and I liked how a bunch of old pop music was played in the film. Of course, that is just me because I dunno I have a thing for that stuff.

The acting was good. I don't have much thoughts on it other than "Wow convincing and emotional". They're typical thoughts but I'd say they're true.
Basically I really enjoyed this. It's not Chungking Express tier to me. I'm not really sure why this is. Maybe I have to give it a few rewatches but it could definitely become a favorite of mine sometime.
To sum things up:
Haha cool things. 4/5.

John Fahey - Fare Forward Voyagers:
Fahey's voyage felt like a disassembly of Americana, Folk, and Blues to their rawest elements, exploring the very roots of his inspiration through sprawling tracks ebbing and flowing at his will. Acoustic guitar traditionally breathes nostalgic warmth, but throughout the three pieces it often sounded metallic and influenced by foreign cultures. Lots of dissonance can be heard, especially in the first track, that reminded me of Gamelan from Indonesia in a strange way. Perhaps this is due to the nature of the recording itself. Nonetheless, it provided me a new perspective to guitar picking I have now learned is called American Primitivism (not to be confused with Primitivism(?)- i.e. Stravinsky). I've listened to it about twice now and really enjoy it.

Michio Miyagi - Masterpieces of Koto
[1957]
>japanese classical music
I'm surprised by how clear the production is considering the time in which it was recorded.
Music for the koto, which looks a bit limited but in this compilation Miyagi makes sure the possibilities are stretched out. Not for background listening, every string plucked is important.
Andrew Hill- Black Fire
damn this is so instrumentally tight
the rhythm section is insane, especially Roy Haynes. Hill has a weird half melodic half percussive style that I really like as well, especially in conjunction with Henderson's sax.
I feel like at points this approaches what you would call math jazz, which is something I've been trying to find for a while
this gets a star

Hello! I found another 10 yay!
>Ilk - Zenith
This album is sublime throughout. It starts with a solo of the crystalline organ that we will hear during the whole album. It sounds like the one on Ceaucescu but less ear-piercing. This is the most satisfying Youngs album I've heard so far. The whole album is enchanting, varied and just oozes with ideas. It's one of the best musical representation of an epic journey. I was so overwhelmed by this, especially by the track Labyrinth that I'm giving it the perfect score.
10/10
>Robbie Basho - Zarthus
Now if you're a guy who can create the most epic and beautiful track by playing the piano, why would you stick to the guitar? Rhapsody In Druz was stellar, the sound of the piano reminded me of one of my favourite albums : Luys i Luso. I'm still not fond of his voice but the piano tracks are just too good to ignore.
8/10
>Zeena Parkins and Ikue Mori - Phantom Orchard
Not so much harp but a lot of electroacoustic weirdness. It's not always interesting but the atmosphere is rich and detailed thus it never gets boring. The unique timbre of the harp adds a lot to the overall eeriness.
7/10
