I read that book as a male teenager and had somewhat of a "wtf" response to it in my head. I guess because I had so little to relate to, I had no homoerotic tensions and wasn't doing drugs back then. literally so few of the characters and emotions described mirrored what I was experiencing in the slightest.
even the crux of the book, when they go through the tunnel and feel "infinite"....it was like, I could sort've kind've understand what they were saying? but the profound aim didn't hit its target, seemed somewhat ordinary.....drinking wine at golf courses and what not. making little tapes of emotional songs
