Emo is the lowest common denominator in music. Using the same opening tuning every song and yelling edgy teen angst lyrics doesn't make you an intellectual... it makes you a twat.

Whereas Screamo bands took emo and made it as extreme they could, AmFo basically went the other way and made it as "soft" as possible.
If you take a song like Indian Summer's "Angry Son" and take out the screaming/punk parts you basically have the mold for AmFo. The band Strictly Ballroom coukd also be considered a precursor to them.
Not much else completely like them within the genre, so maybe you should look into Math Rock. TTNG and Toe might be up your alley.
I feel like by this point with generic bands like Modern Baseball being popular, you would assume people would have more of a grasp of what "emo" music is.
