She's not 'pretending' to be a girl, but to answer your question, when somebody belongs to a marginalised group, then their art does tend to attract more attention when it reaches the mainstream. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is debatable, but I would hope people judge the art rather than the person. I didn't personally like the album.

'Acclaimed' just gives my point more credence, acclaimed meaning all critics adored it, and was highly publicized for standing on not just musical merits but pure social politics, which now that period is over, probably due to waning popularly. Antony doubles down even further and creates an entirely political album about the environment, war, race and any other easy bait because the mere mention of those topics gains hits.
I didn't like them then, and I think they're worse now.
