Can we have a thread for comically bad albums? That is, albums that are so bad they've become legendary in their own right.
I don't know why exactly, but I find this phenomenon kinda fascinating. It's amazing listening to this album and imagining the circumstances that allowed this music to not only be recorded in the first place, but then released with major label support. I think it's actually my favourite post-black album metallica because it's the only one that's actually intriguing (even if it's for the wrong reasons)

can someone explain to me why this album is bad? I mean, I get that bad lyrics might be off-putting and the snare drum isn't likable for everyone. But it's the only Metallica album I like. I don't know, it's catchy, punchy, the lack of solos is a plus because it makes space for the rhythmic section to be more aggressive and dynamic. I mean, I also like to make fun of thr Frantic-tic-tic line, but there are so many great moments on this album.

Every song is stitched together out of simplistic riffs that don't mesh well together, they're all so long and repetitive and boring, the production is gratingly bad, James tries to croon and whisper and use his voice in ways that just don't suit him, it's just thoroughly unpleasant to listen to.
I like The Unnamed Feeling and All Within My Hands and that's about it

Before /mu/, I saw contrarianism as just another annoying trait that music snobs had, almost to categorize an artist/genre/etc that has been deemed laughable, or unrelatable to the scene one is a part of. But now, I understand that it's just being ironic for the sake of shock value - in other words, being a fucking hipster who's so scared of their own personal taste being shunned that they just drop any appreciation of the blacklisted music.
I listened to St. Anger at 12 years of age, right after I heard RTL, K'EA, and ...AJFA. I didn't fucking know better, I'd never seen SKOM, I loved Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin and Green Day, and people tend to have a soft spot (or a handful of nostalgia) for the music they grew up with.
Yes, that snare is obnoxious. Yes, SKOM is a cringefest that showcases the very essence of whit musicianship and the decline of Metallica's standing in rock, and it marks their Napster bullshit. But some people like it.
Some people listen to ICP. They genuinely enjoy it, it brings the best out of them, they laugh, they cry just like when a /mu/tant contrarian-ass tryhard tickles his butthole over Car Seat Headrest over tea. It doesn't make them "contrarian", it makes them "Juggalos" if they adopt the lifestyle, or in the case of CSH, "fags".

It's all about context too. A band's image, the scene they come from etc will always play a much larger part in the critical reception to their music than people like to admit. We are shallow creatures at the end of the day and popular music is very much about what's fashionable and what isn't. Of course this doesn't really apply to St. Anger, which is just a shitty album period. But I have this whole theory about how the Black Album is just as important to the 90s revival of rock music as Nevermind was, and musical historians seem really too keen to try and make everyone forget about this. They should be held in similar regard (that is, Nevermind is not as good as people think it is and TBA is better than people think it is). Nirvana brought punk rock into pop music and made it commercially viable with SLTS, but Metallica did the same thing with heavy metal/ Enter Sandman and get basically no credit for it, instead being branded as evil sellouts. And this is ENTIRELY due to the context surrounding each album and nothing to do with the musical quality of either.
