Which state has the best music?
>>
Probably California
>>
Georgia, even if it had nothing but the Athens scene
>>

This, plus we have Deerhunter
>>
Probably a tie between Washington and Oregon.

Absolutely Georgia. In addition to the whole Athens scene, you've got Atlanta, hip-hop and trap capital of the world, and rural Georgia with it's country and Appalachian music.
>>
New York
>>
Not Alabama, that's for sure. Two of the best to come out of here decided to claim they're from another planet rather than be Alabama musicians.
>>
California
New York
Georgia
Washington
Ohio
Louisiana
Tennessee

this makes sense
>>
Nobody's mentioned the state of Austin yet?

What does "California" or "New York" music even sound like? They're just big-ass states with large populations, and hence a lot of musicians. Also, for business reasons, a lot of musicians from other states migrate there.

But Louisiana has a sound so distinct that as soon as you hear it, you know where it's from. Same with Texas swing, Memphis blues, and Muscle Shoals soul.

All American indigenous music originated in the deep South - deal with it.

yeah but georgia has jason aldean

and Jason Isbell

What about city-specific scenes like No Wave? That's definitely a part of the New York sound. You could also argue The Velvet Underground fit in with NYC too. The same exact thing is happening.
>>
Georgia gave the world Ray Charles, James Brown, The Allman Brothers, REM, The B-52s, Pylon, Deerhunter, Neutral Milk Hotel and the whole Elephant Six collective, Mastodon, Drive-By Truckers, Cat Power, The Coathangers, The Black Lips, and Outkast.

Case closed.

Good point. I'll give you No Wave and VU = NYC. John Zorn, too, could have come from nowhere other than New York.

And as long as we're dwelling on the 20th Century, CAli can lay claim to the Laurel Canyon sound (if they're not too embarassed).
>>
The Brooklyn-Austin-Portland triangle of indie music.
>>
>>65280668
>Neutral Milk Hotel
Can we really claim this one though?
>>
are there any actual bands from South Dakota or Wyoming?
>>
Can California lay claim to tbe Beach Boys and the sounds of surf rock? Because that's classic American music right there

Do we have to count them? Their first album is fine, but

Rock Lobster is a perfect song at least
>>

"After the release of Avery Island, Neutral Milk Hotel became a fully-fledged band, as Julian Koster, Scott Spillane and Jeremy Barnes joined Mangum, the band now being based in New York City. Soon after this, they moved to Athens, Georgia, where many of Mangum's friends had begun to settle, and the Elephant 6 had begun to take root." (Wikipedia)

This, and "Live from Jittery Joe's."

Is it even a competition?
It's Wisconsin easy

I prefer Dance This Mess Around, though that first half of their debut is perfect. Unfortunately, everything after that, not so much.
