currently between these two cables, fender is cheaper
which one should i get? should i just go for a fender california series?
>>
>>65264785
I've had the Fender tweed one for a few years now and it's held up pretty well.
>>
>>65264785
At the lengths you're looking at there is no difference in terms of sound, the resistance/capacitance and also the shielding on both of these cables will be virtually identical. Don't fall for the marketing in that regard. Now it's just up to build quality and maybe warranty. In any case I'd just get a sturdy cable that has an easy to open connector so you can repair it if anything fails at some point. I like cordial, neutrik jacks and just overall very solid.

>BASS
Serious question, how do bassists stay motivated? What does a bedroom bassist even play "for fun"? I appreciate bassists, I really do, but I can't imagine anyone sitting at home playing a bassline and seriously enjoying themselves. Is that why we have so many "bass soloists" and ERB wankery? Or am I missing something?
>>
>>65263172
>those pickups
>>
>>65265364
not a bassist but i think all bassists want to play in a band since being a "bedroom bassist" would get pretty boring, just a theory
>>
>>65265364
There's no such thing as a "bedroom bassist" since they are in such high demand.
>>
>>65265364
My rhythm guy is a lot better than me, but wants to stay on rhythm because of how it drives the music and how he has to always be on point. I think bass is similar. Bassist's have to be smooth as fuck, and when you star r paying attention, there are a lot of cool walks and counter melodies in a popular songs.

That said, my bassist does groan a lot about certain"E E E E" bass songs we like to play.

I hear similar shit from the drummer on songs with meg white drum parts. I feel it too on simpler songs without a bunch of lead. Stand around for 16 bars and just try to add a little something without being overbearing before my solo.

Variety is the key. We all get to pick songs with parts we like to play, even if they don't make it to real set lists.

Comments on my playing (started roughly 1 year ago) are also appreciated.
>>
>>65265857
String tree. It holds the strings at an angle (higher or lower, can't remember) but it keeps tune better when using the whammy bar.
>>
>>65265957
Nice, me and my bassist friend are trying to figure out a way to have a rehearsal space for both of our places. I'm primarily a drummer/guitarist and while he has around 15 guitars/bassists, he won't convert a bass/guitar for me since I'm a lefty.

So whenever we jam, one of us has to haul the stuff that we want to jam with to somebody's place (either me+my drums+my guitar stuff) or (him+his bass/guitar stuff).

Where are you located? I'm in Louisville, Kentucky, lol.
>>
>>65264785

>>

>>65265534
Bedroom bassist here, there are fun basslines, so I play these mostly. Also still trying to improve as much as possible before I start playing with other people. Yes, pure rhythm practice is boring as hell but I still do it for at least 30 minutes every day, just need to turn it into a routine.
>>65265686
Also this. I find even "boring" or simple basslines rewarding, because actually nailing them is really hard and you're still doing a really important job.
>>
>>65265881
Does he play too?

You really want a guitar that you only half own?

They're very nice guitars though. Though I don't like satin necks as much
>>

>he fell for the seagull meme
>>
>>65265881
No, he's just going to give me money for half. He doesn't play, he's just encouraging me.

>>65266033
I feel your pain. I've really learned to value convenience. It saves so much time and makes jamming easier on everyone. Even little things, like making sure every mic stand has pick and drink holders, every amp has it's own tuning pedal, having all kinds of different length cables to keep things clean.

I live in Cincy

>>65266088
>actually nailing them is really hard
yep. it's less forgiving than people think and it calls for different approaches, fingerings, positions.

>you're still doing a really important job
precisely. it makes the rest of the music more than the sum of it's parts.
>>
>>65266312
>He fell for the Seagull meme meme
>>
>>65265364
I have a bass guitar, i just play guitar stuff on it. Like some of the same riffs and licks and shit. Then play anesthesia/pulling teeth a few times. Get bored, go guitar weedly weedly instead.
>>
>>65264785
I usually go with store brands with lifetime warranties.

Just tell them GC or Sam Ash has it cheaper and they'll usually discount a lot (I got 3 15ft XLR cables for $15 last time). If you ever get a grounding issue or otherwise fuck the cable up, just take it in the next time you're there.

It's been worth the convenience for me.

Fender tweeds are nice, though. Braiding helps prevent it getting hung up and tangled.
>>
>>65265881
I'd rather get a standard over an elite, I prefer the standard series pickups over the noiseless
That being said I would get it
>>
>>65266326
Cincinnati? Damn dude, we're pretty close. What all do you play?

Me and my friend tend shift our jams from noisy things to slow droney psychedelic stuff usually.
>>
>>65265957
Holy shit, I have that exact same acoustic. Don't have pics right now (mobilefag)
>>
>>65266550
we'll play anything we think we can pull of reasonably well.

ends up being a lot of sublime, black keys, radiohead, chilli pepper, phish, etc

basically 90's and 00's alternative rock.

some funk, too. older beastie boys or bill whithers type shit. and random jams.
>>
>>65266674
Not bad! We tend to jam to original stuff. I'll lay down a beat or he'll loop a bassline and we sculpt around that.

>>
>>65266312
Sorry, seagull meme? Not sure what you mean. The guitar I bought was about $300 and is (in my eyes) comparable if not superior in sound and playability to $800+ Martin & Breedlove guitars, so it was a no brainer to me.
>>
>>65266985
I use the blues driver all the time. Probably more than any other pedal. The ones on top are things that I don't use all the time and don't fit on the pedal board, so I'll swap them out when needed.
>>
i want an ibanez jet king with p 90s but nobody fucking sells them, only the first version and the one with humbuckers
>>
>>65267441
Not that guy, but seagulls sound a little brittle to me. Martin overcharges for their non-standard models(D-18, 28, etc.) though, so I wouldn't be surprised if your seagull sounded better. I prefer yamaha's in that price range but for $300 you can't go wrong.

Terrible. The best you could get is a shitty tone knob rolled off type of sound, like in >>65264602

or you could go twangy like Bill Frisell, which is a cool sound but hard to pull off without biting his sytle. Really though a Jaguar is probably the last guitar I would get for Jazz, almost anything else is better.

I got a trade offer straight across on craigslist, wanting to trade my fender frontman 212r for a bogner alchemist 112, and I need someone to redpill me on Bogner amps. I wanted to originally sell it and get a vox ac15, or a blackstar ht 20, and was wondering if it would be a good choice instead of those.
>>
>>65269297
YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO TRADE A SHITTY FENDER FRONTMAN FOR A BOGNER ALCHEMIST???

Doitdoitdoitdoit.

The Alchemist series amps are literally 10X better than any of the other amps you listed. They sound amazing, are constructed beautifully, and are great in the studio or in a live setting. My old band's recording engineer swore by them.

In terms of sound, it's a different kind of clean from the AC15. The Alchemist won't break up as easily but will also respond better to higher levels of gain from pedals. Also, the AC15 is much more limited in terms of volume output compared to the Alchemist. The Blackstar WISHES it could be a Bogner.

Get the fucking Bogner you knob.

>>
>>65269545
It's a versatile modern amp. Just take care of it and you shouldn't have any major issues. You'd have just as many issues with the Blackstar and Vox, or with most other tube amps under $800 anyway. Make sure you sit down and play with it before making the trade so you can do some early troubleshooting.

It's literally by far the best amp of the ones you're considering. Even if it is a budget amp, it sounds like something twice as expensive.
>>
>>65269635

>>
>>65269608
Same guy.

Find out what year the amp was made, let it warm up a couple minutes before releasing the standby mode, check the EQ knobs for any scratching sounds coming through the amp (the scratching indicates that some dirt has gotten into the wiring and will need to be cleaned), turn it up and pay attention to any sudden drops in volume (indicates that a tube needs replacement), sniff the air near the amp after a several minutes (a strong burning chemical smell could indicate that the output transformer is about to crap out, which will cost at least a couple hundred dollars to replace; a subtle woody smell is fine and is just the result of the hot tubes warming the interior of the tolex, wood, and glue), listen for any risidual ringing coming from the amp (could indicate a faulty tube).

bass is an integral component of all popular forms of music. every guitarist i know plays bass. bass players seem to fall into 2 categories: musicians that just happen to play bass in their current band (meaning they play other instruments as well), or specialists that dig deep and refine their style. upright bass is a thing, and takes a lot of time and effort to master. so does jazz-funk wankery, to give it some credit. working up a really nice bass part for a recorded song is satisfying as fuck. noodling can be fun but you're right about it not being nearly as sustainable as with a guitar

>>65264512
that's a remarkably healthy looking basement. does it get cold? any issues with moisture? my board has a few dead channels due to winter condensation at my old place

>>65270645
also, transcribe more than songs. write down all the exercises or routines you do, progressions you jam on, and licks that pop out at you while noodling. it will only become a part of your musicianship if you actively engage with it

It's very common to put a 10-band EQ before the fuzz. The higher a band is pushed the more it distorts. Lower a band to keep it clean. The synergy and control is huge.

It gets called a blend knob and when the selector is in the middle you use it to adjust the volume of the neck pickup as compared to the bridge pickup.
And when only a single pickup is in use it acts like a master volume.

I'm hearing a bass guitar layer and maybe a synth layer for sine wave subs. Heavy heavy compression. That throaty guitar sound could be any number of things. I'm not sure if it's speakers or DI. My 4003 has a similar voicing naturally right out of the pickups.

Bassist here looking to upgrade my first bass. What would you guys use if price didn't matter?
>5 string
>soapbar P pickup
Tone wise I'm looking for a big bottom end, tasteful hint of distortion, and some growl. Think Rex Brown or Dug Pinnick with a touch less OD and a bit more bottom end.
>Potentiometers
What rating should I go for? Not sure what's in it right now but I'd like to bring out a little more brightness. It's a very bass and low-mid pumping machine.
>bridge and tuners
Looking for the most stable types of bridge and tuners. Don't really care about anything else but tuning/intonation stability.

What else would you get checked out on it? I want to make people think it's a boutique level instrument if at all possible.
>>
>>65271921
I can say I recently switched out the original bridge on the 4003 for a hipshot replacement and was surprised by how much of a difference it made. The original was a real pain the in the ass to intonate and lacked individual string height control. Being able to easily intonante and set the action without loosening strings was more than worth the cost.
>>
>>65271556
Pls respond. It didn't use to have that much hum until recently. My zakk wylde signature wah has much less hum, but is not versatile
>>
>>65272053
>It didn't use to have that much hum until recently.
Check the wiring, especially on the jacks. Wahs are very simple circuits, any failure is likely to be mechanical rather than a bad part.
>>
>>65272043
My stock bridge has it but it's a pain in the ass. There's 2 screws for each that sit in a little groove. That's it. The low B intonation is also a pain in the ass. It warbles in and out of tune for some reason. I don't know if it's my tuner struggling with the slower frequencies or if the saddle is moving.
>>
>>65272124
>I don't know if it's my tuner struggling
Ah yea, tuners always do that on low stuff. Fuck the meter. It's only out of tune if it sounds out of tune.

Also, I personally recommend Ibanez starter packs, they hold rather well, a friend of mine still plays with his. Squiers have terrible bridges and dig into your palm (or used to) but they are fine too (had one), plus around the cheapest and have the classic strat look if you like that.
What's your budget, we can put you together a better deal or better gear around your budget.

My mother after she told me I had to quit drums and start guitar because she wouldn't let me play drums at home due to the loudness (jokes on her, I jammed shitty bedroom metal all the time through a shitty metal zoned 15w peavy up to 11 all the time).

Guitar inspirations after that, David Gilmour, Santana, Lindsey Buckingham, Judas Priest duo, Cannibal Corpse duos (I forgot which one first), and the original Black Dahlia Murder duo (Eschbach-Kempanien).
>>
>>65272776
isnt their some guy always saying ibanez are terrible? the gios i think?

also budget is upper limit of around $400
>>
>>65272842
It's easy to say that any starter pack are shitty, and since a lot of people here are biased towards fender like stuff they dismiss it.
In my opinion it's good because:
Neck is thin, comfortable, action (string height) can be set to be pretty flat if you want (lighter to play).
The trem holds well if you leave it, but can take a bombing here and there.
Body is light and comfortable sitting down and standing.
Another plus (but this comes with all strat like starters) is that you can reach the electronics through the front plate so it's pretty easy to swap and fix shit, so great for modding after you graduate to something higher.
I'm talking about the jumpstart ibanez packs, not buying a stand alone gio guitar, a gio stand alone is not worth it indeed.

400 gets you something nice imo.
Depends on some stuff you might want to do or not.
For example:
You can get a focusrite scarlett 2i2 or smaller for 100-150
And get a nice 300 guitar, which is where they start to hit the good value for money spot.
If you like rock guitars, there's Squier Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe series (they are between 300-400 new, easy to find used I think).
There's some Epiphones that are worth it too, like the epiphone dot, sg-400, and lp standard.
Ibanez has some nice models like the RG421 for 300ish too.
Jackson has the entry level line for around that price and they are nice too.

This might stretch your budget if bought at outright msrp price you see, but with some looking and deals/sales you'll stay under 400 and the scarlett interface plus nice guitar gives you:

Ability to play with Guitar Rig in computer (which has tons of effects and amps, tuner, metronome, recording plug in, etc.) or directly record shit with software, plus a nice guitar.

Continued next post with other options.
>>
>>65272778

A friend suggested learning guitar and taught me some basic chords. Then I digged further myself, but my inspiration was mainly SRV back then.
>>

elliott smith
i still love elliott but that influence is long gone. i ended up coming to love playing repetitive, droney stuff all in open tunings.
>>
>>65272842
>>65272979
If you can't stretch your budget at all and prefer a simple amp rather than playing through the pc (which in the past made sense, today not so much, you can always rent or buy a shitty amp later if you start to jam with people) I'd still go for a 300 ish guitar and a simple small amp. Like a 5 to 20 watt Fender, Blackstar, Marshall, Orange, etc.

To put it this way, look for 250-350 worth of guitar, and then add either a basic basic amp or an interface for the computer.
A basic bedroom amp is between 30 and 80 bucks, they sound clean and normal, nothing special but for practice you don't need anything else. I don't like more expensive Line 6 spiders (aka amps with software for sound and effects) because although they have effects and different sounds, they don't sound nice with pedals and they don't have any benefit of playing through a computer.

I'd go with the interface though, because you can play along with music more easily, experiment with effects and sounds, record yourself easily, etc. That said, if you suck at computers it might scare you but it's really simple to use.

Here I'm giving the impression that the guitar is more important than the amp, but it's the other way round actually, but it only applies once you're an experienced guitarist (like, what would you do with a boutique 300 bucks valve amp and a 60 buck guitar?) because the guitar will become irrelevant to good playing and the amp will be relevant for good sound.
But this comes way later in your life as a guitarist.
Buying a nice guitar over a nice amp for a starter has the benefits of:
Resale value if you give up (still, expect to lose money... but don't give up! it's super fun).
Motivation to play a nice looking thing you like to hold.
It feels nice on the hands and you like to play it.
>>
>>65272778
K-ON and BECK inspired me to. but watching Eric Clapton's Crossroads fest on youtube (specially the part where he and BB jammed) really made it for me, I also discovered John Mayer on that fest which has become my main influence alongside those two.

Summary:

Look around for guitars around 250-350~, look at them and hold them, see if you simply like them. Then ask here if someone has experience with them to know if they won't be a nightmare to own. Don't let store employees try to impress you or push a product on you, fuck 'em.

Depending on what you want of a guitar, use the rest for the guitar to pc interface or amp, plus extras, examples:
Interface + cable: 100-150~
Amp + cable + tuner: 60-100~ bucks.

Strings will cost you like 5 bucks a pack, I recommend nickel types because they feel soft. Some people change them until break, or every month or so.
Guitar picks cost like cents or like 2 bucks a pack of 10-20. I recommend Dunlop Tortex or Jazz III, between .6 (soft) and 1.0 (hard).

i know that im just saying a 12 string isnt easily versatile for a lot of songs since when playing chords you will always have the jangly tone and when plucking you must be a mute god because the string will ring out into the others. Its just a meh.

That's bullshit, muting technique is the same, you rest your hand on the strings you don't play and that's it. That's how it works for every stringed instrument, regardless of how much strings it has.

>>
>>65274861
If you have 6 extra strings that are an octave higher you will always get a more jangly sound no matter what you do with your tone knob, second its a simple fact with the more strings you have the more you need to mute since the sound will bleed in to the other strings.
>>
Yp, hipster bedroom playe rnerds have you ever heard of the kemper or the axe-fx ? Didn't think so.

Go on talking about your pricey stompboxes and valve amps that you will never use unless you have a studio or a professional gigging musician .
>>
>>65274932
I think it's obvious that if you have a 12s electric, and you need some to not be doubled, you take them out. If you don't feel like using the 12 at all after a while but like the shape and so on, just use it as a 6, nothing wrong with it.

I personally enjoy 12s acoustics because they fill rather well when doing a single voice + guitar session. And for electrics, I wouldn't double the 5th and 6th.

>>65274983
I know this is a joke obviously but I've had heard this irl before
>pricey stompboxes and valve amps
The fucking axe is like 2k or something isn't it?
Also, what made me dislike the profiling amps wasn't the misha mansoor circlejerk and videos or the hype, but rather when I saw a video of the product being shilled by Trivium, and they just play that live through the PAs... it's so clinically clean and boring... damn man.
Even bands that use shit like that do have a box or something on stage for stage sound and live feeling, but going PA only is just... weird.
When I saw a band do that live it was boring as fuck, you had to stay behind the middle of the area so that you wouldn't see them acting and playing but the sound comming from the PAs on top, kinda as if it was a Lip Synch.
>>
>>65274983
>axe-fx

that doesnt make any sense the bedroom fags here actually own those.

You may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself: "Well, how did I get here?"

>the more strings you have the more you need to mute since the sound will bleed in to the other strings.
That already happens on a 6 string, which is exactly why you're supposed to always mute everything that's not played. As much as I can understand having too much jangle on a 12, muting is not an issue on them.

>>65275066
I've seen them go for 1k, even had one with a power amp and FRFR cab for 1,5k.
Playing it through a PA is using it the wrong way imo, you should use it through an amp, and then mic that amp through the PA, I've seen a few bands do that and they sounded good.
I don't think there's much of a point buying an axe fx/kemper when all you're going to do is boring metal like trivium though.

I'm this guy>>65274575

I'm more of a rhythm player and I like shoegaze. My brother is in my band and he's good at coming up with stuff to go over my rhythm.

I was looking at one of those in store not long ago, ended getting another six string but one day I'll get a twelve string.

For me profiling amps will be forever bedroom/studio gear.
When I'm outside, playing, drinking, etc. I just want an amp that can be fixed and is reliable. The fact that they are software based would just make me anxious.
The most I have done digitally is use a borrowed (high end) multi-fx, run it through a poweramp and box, mic'ed. It gets the job done, but I disliked having to spend a whole week setting up the multi-fx.
>>
>>65275180
An axe fx and an ss poweramp is a lot lighter than an all tube head, which is a big advantage when doing big tours
>>
>>65275229
I've never gigged at big venues.
But the ones I've been I've arranged for them to have an amp ready or we share one with the other small time bands.
If not, that's when I run a full SS set up.
I haven't played live since 2012 though, so I have no idea what's up these days.
A friend runs a small bugera mic'ed, he plays black metal.
Another uses one of those high end PODs, which I guess it's not too far from a profiler + power amp combo.

Anything from CME or Wildwood really

you're playing a bad chord progression

don't use G B D# because augmented chords are especially gross
>>
Is there any idea in "upgrading" your bridge on a bass guitar?

I just bought a BadAss and a BadAss II off Ebay just in case.
>>
>>65276027
If you have a shitty bridge sure.
I want to replace the one in mine because the saddles don't stay in tune properly, I think they are badly matched with their set up screws, but I can't find screws that fit properly.

WAYY overpriced for Korean guitars. Nice though
>>
So with an axl badwater and an axl headliner, is the extra pickup on the headliner worth it? Apart from that ate they pretty much the same? Does the extra pickup juat let you distort more?

The tube one? I'd say go for a DRRI if you're in that territory. Do you guys use a lot of pedals?

Epi, I'm debating on keeping it or selling since the pups are garbage. I also might respray it Surf if I keep it and upgrade the pups.
