Almost all music that isn't church related before the baroque period was Bardic or in some way poetic (don't be confused with that term, most of the bardic stuff I've heard is Turkish/middle eastern rather than norse like people associate). The illiad and oddesey for example are bardic tales that likely would have been sung/spoken with some sort of string instrument accompaniment. There was very little purely instrumental music, as least that we know of, simply because instrumental songs weren't passed down through generations of bards for local/folk entertainment, and areas that didn't have professional bards that learned it as a hereditary trade simply don't have folk music that dates back farther than the Renaissance.

Words prevailed over music, today music prevails over words. But there actually was instrumental music, and I like to think that it was somehow very cool.

Yes its nice, although it kind of is a brush on various eras and forms of greek music. Unfortunately most ancient music is a rough reconstruction at best, not necessarily exactly what was intended. Also, like early Gregorian chants, most early music was non-metric, so its unclear how it sounded even if the notes were right.

right, most surviving music was dedicated to the gods or a king/legendary figure. It was written down simply for such dedication rather than posterity, so the instrumental music that existed went extinct with its culture.
