The opening always makes me think of this album
Why do you guys like OPN? He doesn't know how to "compose," properly speaking. The "great" albums like Replica, R+7, and GoD were compacted by juxtaposition, repetition, or successive superimpositions, procedures clearly of limited bearing. He's a hack.

Album isn't 10/10 for me, but Airbag's intro is my favorite intro for any album in existence.

Properly utilizing structure, harmony, themes to develop a work in a coherent fashion: not juxtaposing random elements next to one another.
>>65257026
I don't see how OPN doesn't do this. Americans is a perfect example.
Morphine - Good
>>65257097
A perfect example of how he'll simply cut away to many discordant samples and lay them on top of each other haphazardly in an attempt to seem like he knows how to compose.

the start of that album is so immediately captivating to me. everything just sounds otherworldly. and that weird ass drum beat. and it doesnt take long for the chanting. at that point was when i knew this album would be a 10. huhh

>A perfect example of how he'll simply cut away to many discordant samples and lay them on top of each other haphazardly in an attempt to seem like he knows how to compose.
I know you're just baiting but that's not even close to what he does.
There are a lot of jarring shifts in his songs, but they all sync up to one of the running polyrhythms and create a lot of melodic interest.
And the actual reason for the shifts isn't some gimmicky jump-scare type thing. It progresses the songs in a cohesive way.
If you're looking purely at the domain of classical composition (pitch + voices + time), then no, perhaps he's not a brilliant composer in the traditional sense. But he's a very good and tasteful arranger (and sound designer etc.). He's one of the few electronic producers I've heard who can make drone-ish and hypnotic music without it ever being boring for a moment. At least in his latest few albums.
>>65255166
FWIW, Dan has joked that he's more or less a hack and said his method for creating his earlier albums up until Returnal was "multi track and lies"
But in terms of being able to compose s feeling or a sense of place he's an expert
