Top 10 shoegaze albums?
>>
This is Your Bloody Valentine is GOAT
>>
10. Isn't Anything - mbv
9. Heaven Or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins
8. Velocity : Design :Comfort - Sweet Trip
7. Lazer Guided Melodies - Spiritualized
6. Nowhere - Ride
5. Beat - Bowery Electric
4. Mee Eaux - Bethany Curve
3. Recurring - Spacemen 3
2. Just for a day - Slowdive
3. You Made Me Realize EP - mbv
1. Loveless - mbv/God
>>
Shoegaze is a bad genre outside of the canon albums that came out in the early nineties.
>>
>>65226734
This is #1
>>
>>65226865
>10. Isn't Anything
idk

>9. Heaven or Las Vegas
Important, but not shoegaze

>8. V:D:C
Definitely

>7. Lazer Guided Melodies
Underrated as fuck, but Idk if it's top10 worthy

>6. Nowhere
I'd say yes but many would disagree

>5. Beat
Personal favourite tbqh I'd say yes

>4. Meet Eaux
BC are pretty unremarkabl for the most part

>3. Recurring
Their earlier stuff was massively important and Recurring is arguably shoegaze, but it isn't that good

2. Just For A Day
worst Slowdive album

1. Loveless
mandatory no.1 I guess
>>
>>65227025
Most early nineties gaze is derivative rubbish that aged like milk.

Come back when you listen to more gaze
>>
>>65226734
As far as straight up shoegaze, it's not really worth listening to besides Loveless and Souvlaki. Most of the other good shoegaze-related albums are better categorized as Space Rock, Dream Pop or Post-Rock and/or mixed heavily with other genres like Trip Hop.

It's not that interesting as a genre, the early bands kind of perfected it. But the techniques used in shoegaze have been useful insofar as they've influenced artists outside of the genre.
>>
>>65227082
lol

>Not Including spooky by Lush
>>
>>65227162

Why comment on something you clearly don't know shit about?
>>
>>65227233
Why include Lush when you've got Cocteau Twins? Guthrie was the only thing that made them listenable.
>>
>>65227279
I'm talking about non-shoegaze bands that were influenced by shoegaze. There are very few "shoegaze" bands that were influenced by anything other than MBV, besides Bowery Electric. If you're telling me Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Spiritualized is shoegaze, kill yourself.

this or Loveless yeah
>>
>>65227346
Pastel Blue
A Place To Bury Strangers
Bailter Space
Sweet Trip
Pale Saints
early Verve
Kitchens of Distinction
Chapterhouse
Ecstasy of Saint Theresa
Swirlies
loveliescrushing
The Veldt
Xinlisupreme
Curve

All of these weren't influenced by MBV and/or incorporate other, more prominent influences into their sound.
>>
>>65227459
You just listed more generic shoegaze bands, besides Curve. Try again.
>>
>>65227459
>Veldt
>Xinlisupreme
>loveliescrushing
>Sweet Trip
>generic
You have no clue what you're talking about. Gotcha.
>>
Alison's Halo - Eyedazzler 1992-1996

is the best shoegaze album I've ever heard
>>
>>65227573
to >>65227485
>>
>>65227346
Bands like GY!BE and Spiritualized might not be the same songwriting style of the [generic and shitty] early nineties shoegaze, but they take the experimental and textural elements and do something more creatively interesting, which in my opinion is better.

So you want an album that

>was released after 1995
>sounds a bit like shoegaze
>but not too much, or else it would be a shoegaze band

Pic related? M83? MGMT's self-titled? I don't know
>>
>>65227573
Literally all Cocteau Twins and/or MBV worship, or not shoegaze in the case of Veldt and Xinlisupreme.

>>65227611
That's exactly my point. Shoegaze was great because it opened bands outside of the genre up to new ways of approaching texture.
>>
>>65226865
Where's Catherine Wheel
>>
>>65227634
I'll put it this way. Shoegaze is more a technique than a genre. There's only so much you can do musically when 90% of your focus is on effects and texture, and MBV and Slowdive took that to its limit already. However, using those techniques in different contexts opens up new doors for artists outside of the genre.

Most bands today that identify themselves as shoegaze do nothing but focus on the texture and basic pop songwriting that MBV used, and as a result sound almost identical.

Here's mine:
Loop - A Gilded Eternity
SPC ECO - Sirens & Satellites
Engineers - s/t
Lush - Split
Curve - Pubic Fruit
SPC ECO - Big Fat World EP
Cheatahs - s/t
Heavy Ghost - 10,000 Years
Whirr - Distressor EP
LSD & the Search for God EP

"More of a technique than a genre" is a good way to put it, I'm probably going to start describing it that way from now on

>>
>>65227807
You could also argue that I'm being a dick by arguing that bands from outside of the genre that took heavy influence from shoegaze don't count, however there are so many uninspired MBV revival bands around today that I think it's worth making the distinction.
>>
>>65226734
>Implying anyone would listen to more than Souvlaki and Loveless
>>
>>65227649
>not shoegaze
lol
Ask anyone and they tell you those are shoegaze.

You'rebasically saying that any shoegaze band that takes from other genres is no longer shoegaze, then you complain that the genre is stagnant and all MB knockoffs. Basically, you're a dumbass.

>>65227931
The "all shoegaze is MBV copycats" myth is redundant by now, when lots of bands fused shoegaze with many other styles.
>>

I've already spelled this out for you, but I'll do it again. Shoegaze is a set of techniques. The only bands that refer to themselves as shoegaze today are the uninspired bands that copy MBV. The bands from other genres (like metal, hip hop, trip hop or post-rock) that use these techniques are much more interesting, and generally aren't referred to as shoegaze. A lot of the space rock, neo-psychedelia, noise rock and dream pop bands that influenced shoegaze are also a lot more interesting.

The only bands I can think of within shoegaze that take influence from elsewhere are Curve and Bowery Electric.

best loveless rip off record.
>>
>>65228094
Shoegaze with psych and post-rock influences.

It's the prominent sound is shoegaze.

It's not that difficult to draw the line between post-rock and shoegaze.

Take Tokyo Shoegazer, for instance. They're are heavinly influenced by post-rock, yet are clearly a shoegaze band.

Then you have Sigur Rós, who have some shoegazish crescendos but are considered a post-rock band.
>>
>>65228153
That's more like drone metal with shoegaze influences
>>
I actually like new shoegaze fusion better than the classic sound
Alcian Blue
Have a Nice Life
Ambersmoke
The Angelic Process
Planning For Burial

Just For a Day may be my all time favorite though, I will never understand why people think Souvlaki is better
>>
>>65228174
There's no drone involved, it's just really extreme doomy shoegaze
>>
>>65228217
>angelic process

>>
>>65228162
And I already spoonfed you bands that do something original with the genre.

>Veldt
Shoegaze with soul vocals

>loveliescrushing
ambient + shoegaze

>Sweet Trip
glitch + idm + shoegaze

But sure, keep on denying that these aren't shoegaze bands.
>>
>>65228280
Loveliescrushing is literally Cocteau Twins and MBV worship. There was always an element of ambience in early dream pop and shoegaze.

The Veldt is neo-psychedelia, and obviously a precedence has already been set for combining soul and psychedelia. Sweet Trip is not shoegaze.
>>
from what I've heard so far:

1. I Believe in You by Mob
2. Veloctiy:Design:Comfort by Sweet Trip
3. Deserve by Weed
4. Loveless by My Bloody Valentine
5. Blonder Tongue Audio Baton by Swirlies
>>
>>65228359
>denying this hard
loveliescrushing took MBV's wall of sound and made it formless and structurless. That's an original use of shoegaze.

>The Veldt is neo-psychadelia
This is the definition of reaching holy shit.

>Sweet Trip is not shoegaze

I don't don't get why everyone likes Velocity:Design:Comfort so much, YWNKW is so much better and quite possibly my favorite shoegaze type of album

>>
>>65228614
Check out Ride's Coming Up For Hair, it's their full blown improv/psych album and probably their noisiest.

Also check out Pygmalion, but don't expect shoegaze, just minimalistic ambient pop.
>>
>>65226734
Can you yankee mongs stop using this shit label, which was an NME term of abuse for utter shit university groups? Thanks.
>>
No Particular Order, but I like these
Airiel EP
Slowdive-Souvlaki
Brian Jonestown Massacre-Methodrone
Flying Saucer Attack
PinkShinyUltraBlast-Everything Else Matters
Astrobrite-PinkShinyUltraBlast
Ride-Going Blank Again

For me it's something like:

>My Bloody Valentine- Loveless
>My Bloody Valentine- Isn't Anything
>LSD and the Search for God- Heaven is a Place (can swap for s/t)
>Sweet Trip- velocity:design:comfort
>Ride- Going Blank Again (better than Nowhere for sure)
>Have a Nice Life- Deathconsciousness
>The Pains of Being Pure at Heart s/t (not even that /shugazi/ but I find it really memorable for some reason)
>lovesliescrushing- bloweyelashwish
>The Depreciation Guild- In Her Gentle Jaws
>Slowdive- Souvlaki

Honorable mentions that could replace a few of the lower slots:
>Nothing, Whirr, Ringo Deathstarr, M83, The Fauns, Lush

>>65228614
>>65226865
also excellent lists
>>65227756
leaves out a lot of the elder god tier stuff, but still quite good
>>
>>65228699

>>65228815

Absolutely god-tier.
Why do you think Going Blank Again is stronger? It's got their best tracks for sure but Nowhere is a lot more consistent imo and has a perfect atmosphere.

Also, opinions on Glifted? Amazing shoegaze with math-rock influences from the guy of HUM
>>
>>65228575
I enjoy the glitch aspects of it

Personal preference, Nowhere is arguably more consistent but Leave it All Behind is GOAT so I'd pick Going Blank Again. Also, which Fauns album is your favorite?
>>
>>65228944
>Leave it All Behind
probably my fav Ride track tbqh
The drums and bass are simply on point
Ride's drummer is underrated as fuck the man is a beast

Also fav Fauns is this

Sounds like shoegaze Radiohead at times it blew my mind a few years ago.
>>
>>65228575
People here like bleep bloops.
I personally would've liked to see them release an album with the glitch toned down, but not completely absent.

Something like
https://youtu.be/MXec6yYEX1k
>>
>>65228494
If you're going to argue these bands count as shoegaze, tell me what shoegaze is. The term refers solely to a way of using effects pedals, so where do you draw the line? Does Godspeed also count as shoegaze? Or Deafheaven? The only bands that count to me are the original ones that used the effects in the most basic context possible, and the many bands today that continue to make the same tired music. Everything else fits better into a different genre umbrella.
>>
>>65228944
Saw Ride play and the encore was Leave it All Behind
fucking amazing live
>>
Loveless
>>
>>65228699
This is like complaining about the name Krautrock. Yeah it's stupid and derives from an insult, bit no they won't fucking change it.
>>
>>65229067
>heavy use of effects
>wall of sound that drowns the vocals
>emphasis on atmosphere and texture
>heavily modified guitars
>whispered vocals

Godspeed is clearly post-rock. Their crescendos are noisy, but that's it. They don't even modulate the guitars that much,

Deafheaven are heavily black metal influenced with shoegazish tones. They are a tricky one, some consider them shoegaze, some post-rock, some black metal. Blackgaze sounds about right.
>>
>>65228699
>says shoegaze is an inappropriate term because it was originally a derogatory
>calls people yankees

pretty funny

>>65229068
not gonna lie, I'm pretty jealous over here
>>
>>65229220
>heavily modified guitars
>whispered vocals
So how can The Veldt or a large portion of Sweet Trip's songs be shoegaze?
>>
>>65229354
Lots of shoegaze have strong vocals with lots of presence. The Vedt have that early 90's shoegaze sound going on with noisy guitars and lots of effects.

Sweet Trip shit effects and have smooth ass vocals.
>>
>>65228815
>LSD and the Search for God- Heaven is a Place (can swap for s/t)
Will those fucks hurry up and put out an LP?
>>
>>65229584
Again, how can The Veldt be shoegaze if your definition of shoegaze contradicts that choice of vocals? My point about Sweet Trip is that guitars aren't always the focus. They use shoegaze techniques on synthesizers.

It goes back to my point that shoegaze is a set of techniques that can be applied to different genres, and can only be really considered a genre in and of itself when referring to bands that meet all of the original criteria with minimal outside influence.

>>
>>65226755
I agree, but its definitely not shoegaze, its gothic rock and/or post-punk.
>>
>>65229743
What techniques, using effects? Lots of bands use a shit ton of effects and aren't shoegaze.

Also, no reason you can't make shoegaze with synths. Ulrich Schnauss, M83, Aquarelle, etc.

And you don't NECESSARILY have to have whispered vocals or harmonies to be shoegaze. The Verve had prominent vocals in their early days and were labeled as shoegaze.
>>
>>65229970
>Lots of bands use a shit ton of effects and aren't shoegaze.
I'm pointing out the contradictions in seeing shoegaze as a genre. Your definition referred to "heavy use of effects" and "heavily modified guitars." Where is the line drawn on "heavy use of effects" counting as shoegaze if the whispered vocals aren't a necessity either?
>>
I've been listening to a lot of japanese shoegaze bands lately and my favorite album so far has been pic related

Going Blank Again is 10/10.

When you use those in conjugation in a "wall of sound" way to convey a full, "obfuscating" sound.

But if you want better explanations just research definitions on the genre and it's history or something.
