Think of it like an abstract piece of expressionistic painting, a lofty composition, not a mundane "desktop." That's my desktop, what it's meant to convey. The whole "no icons on the desktop" meme pertains to icons' conventional use: as shortcuts, for opening applications, etc.
I hope you understand why such a rule doesn't apply to me, and that again, my icons serve an aesthetic and artistic purpose, never something so utilitarian as a shortcut.
