Poorfag here. What's a good turntable for ~$100?
I saw this had good reviews but I'm afraid if it's just Crosley-tier quality.
>>
>>65202915
No counterweight so its crosley-tier
>>
>>65202915
There is no such thing as a good turntable under $100.
Your only chance is to find something used but in decent shape for 80 bucks somewhere.
>>
if you're poor, you really shouldn't be buying gear or collecting vinyl. it's a sink of money. only reason you'd want in while not having the resources to support such a hobby is to placate your ego and how you wish to project yourself to others, period.
>>
>>65202932
What counts as the counterweight anyway? I never did get what that was.

>>65202965
Not even the lower Audio-Technica models? That's unfortunate.

>>65203122
It's a mix of being poor and cheap, honestly. But i see your point.
>>
>>65202965
confirmed. My used technics has been pretty stellar, only caveat is I've had to replace the RCA jacks and fiddle with the ground wire. Took a couple of hours but mostly because I'd never worked on a turntable before and had to get my sea legs. If you're the type of person who would be completely lost taking one apart and replacing some basic components, you might not want to risk it on a used table. If you get a belt drive I think having to replace the belt at some point is a likely scenario. Luckily mine is direct drive which I'm pretty happy with anyways because the speed stability is superb.

You also might end up replacing the cart, I'm debating whether to do mine, I think it sounds fine for the most part except a hint of distortion on things like cymbal hits, which I think might be my records since they're used as well. But the needle is definitely old and that's concerning for record maintenance, at least it tracks at 1.5 grams so any damage from a worn stylus can't be too bad.
>>
>>65203152
A counterweight is pretty much what it sounds like : a weight on the tonearm, opposite end to the cartridge.
When buying a turntable, you want to have an adjustable countereight. It is here to make sure the needle does not "dig" into the record, or touchs it enough to follow the groove. without a counterweight your needle will damage the record and will also deteriorate much faster.
A counterweight you can adjust is better than nothing but it might stillbe bad for the needle and records.

The sad thing is not only do you need a decent (500-1000$ at LEAST) record player to play records, you also need a GOOD stereo system to hear it on, which could easily cost more then the record player itself.

If anyone could rec me some good stereo systems that sound decent but also don't cost an arm and a leg, it would be much appreciated.
>>
>>65203365

I go to estate auctions and stuff and I buy high end 70's stereo equipment from Pioneer and Klipsch for next to nothing. Always less than $10 for a pair of speakers and one or two bucks for receivers. Definitely the way to get that stuff imo.

Unfortunately it doesn't extend to TT's due to the vinyl boom. Dealers will bid them up to at least $50 (even shitty ass ones) to resell to dumb college kids. I guess the kids all listen with headphones though because none of the dealers will touch stereo gear.
>>
>>65202915
>Good turntable
>100 USD
Fuck no. 500 usd is the minimal for a decent turntable.
>But oh you can get a turntable used for a quater of that price
Those fucking turntables are old as fuck, have many parts that are deteriorated, and will ruin your records exstenively. Don't even get me started on other cost required to make your setup sound decent at best. Expect to pay at least 900-1500 USD for a medicore setup that wont damage your records and will sound barable. Anything less will sound worse than low quality cds at best.

Either go vintage and buy a new needle, or just get an Audio Technica LP60. It gets a lot of shit from vinylfags but it is a decent start-up turntable and definitely the best for it's price range. It was my first turntable and it worked beautifully.
>>
I feel you anon. Just get spotify premium (student version). 60 bucks a year. You'll have a much larger library to choose from

OP just get an audio technica for your first turntable and promise yourself down the road when you have more cash you'll get a nicer one.
>>

>Anything less will sound worse than low quality cds at best.
You clearly have no understanding of anything you're saying
>>
>>65205088
What the fuck is a "low quality CD"
>>
>>65205792
He may mean putting like 96kbs mp3s onto a CD, but either way, what he said doesn't even relate to low quality vinyl
>>
>>65205690
I hope you know you're literally poor .

I am just telling OP the truth. I know you faggots like to fool yourselves with all this placebo nonesene that a under 500 ISD setup will sound good. get real!
>>
>>65205914
>placebo nonesene that a under 500 ISD setup will sound good

This is an intense brew of projection or total ignorance of what words mean or both. A $2000 system is nothing but placebo. You think it sounds better because it costs more. blindfolded side by side with a system I put together for a couple hundred with second hard components, you couldn't tell which one was which. Period. Most of the stuff I buy for peanuts is better built than flashy new audiophile gear you buy in a fancy showroom today, it just happens to be 30 or 40 years old but its built like the obelisk from 2001. Audio circuits are just inductors, capacitors and transistors, if they're well made they last forever.
>>
>>65206432
>old stuf last forever meme
please anon. stop it. You are making laugh at your patheticness.
>>
I swear, you guys are the kind of idiot to set up a bad low quality setup in a room with bad acoustics and low quality cables from a department store. Don't tell me you guys also buy those awful remastered lps too.
>>
>>65202965
this
>>
>>65203365
>500-1000$ at LEAST
This is fucking nonsense btw. There are some good new $300-$400 turntables, and some amazing used vintage tables for that price
>>
>>65207190
Your fucking nonsense btw. You dont know anything about audio. Then again, this is /mu/ so nobody here has the technical knowledge like I do when it comes to audio ( let alone vinyl).
>>
>>65207236
pro-ject carbon is a perfectly fine beginner turntable. Fuck, you can even get a meme technics SL-1200 for less if you're lucky
>>
>>65207293
Ew NO! Might as well say goodbye to all your vinyls if you are going to play them on that shit.
>>
>>65207312
should've known you were meming
>>
>>65207236
nah bud, you're wrong here. I go to school for this stuff and also work in an archive. You can get relatively inexpensive turntables that won't damage records too much in the short term (read: 50-ish years) and which sound fine. The real quality degradation parts come from speakers, not turntables. Get a turntable which won't fuck up your shit too much, put your records somewhere where they won't get damaged and try to get the best speakers you can. If your turntable is the most expensive part of your audio setup you have fucked up miserably.
>>
>>65206638
They won't last forever but they sure as fuck will outlive you and your kids and still sound fine
>>
>>65202915
At that price go vintage. Get something with a counterweight, and make sure you buy a new cartridge and belt.
>>
>>65202915
OP, turntables are expensive for sure. I got a U-Turn orbit w/ a cue to raise and lower the tonearm for about $350, and that's still the lower end of good here.

For you, honestly, if you plan on upgrading in the future, a low-end turntable like an Audio Technica lp60 is good enough. It'll be incredibly hard to find anything worth fixing up at this price range and you won't find quality, that's for sure, but honestly, the damage these turntables (even those without counterweights) do to your records is vastly overstated. Even Crosley turntables won't obliterate your records like people think (but after a good number of plays you'll definitely get crackling and popping showing up). Just get something like an lp60 that doesn't have wow and flutter and you'll be good to go for now until you upgrade. Honestly.
>>
>>65207847
No. No no no no no no no and absolutely no. The LP60 will rape your records to such a degree that you wont be able to enjoy your muwic without hearing so much distrotion it sounds like an industrial rap song.
>>
>>65207981
so the orbit is fine then?

>>
>>65207990
Its medicore at best. Highly not recommended unless you are a dj.
>>
Don't buy vinyl if you can't afford a good setup
>>
>>65207981
I had a lp60 for two years and those records don't sound any different than my new records on my much better new table
>>
>>65208065
Then your current player is aso shitty. I can tell when a record has been played on a sub 500 dollar player. Its blantently clear.
>>
>>65208150
Technics SL1200 mk. II
>>
>>65208018
What's your setup montie?
>>
>>65208150
Dust particles and dirt in the groves affect the sound much more than wear from a $300 table
>>
>>65208234
A 300 usd is going to have inferiro wiring and parts. As a result, its not only going to sound really shitty but its also going to make your records shit. Do yourself a favor and do more research before posting.
