I'm looking to buy a cheap but good electric guitar just to learn and play at home and I'm thinking of an Ibanez Gio, anyone own(ed) one of these? what is it like?
Paul Reed Smith all the way my dude

I've had one and they're fine. I would just spend just the little extra money and get a Fender Squier & amp (or a Ibanez Jumpstart pack in your case) and have it looked at by a guitar technician.
dont go with low end ibanez
especially gio since it sounds like shit
corts are better in the low end section than ibanez

Your budget?

He said cheap family. Budget PRSs are still somewhat pricey

I can spend about $300, I'm looking for something to "melt my fingers" on

Don't listen to anybody but me. Ibanez Gio is garbage.
Squiers and Fenders are decent, but for cheap your best bet is not one of those
You want a Yamaha Pacifica or a Yamaha RGX

can confirm, threw my gio away after a year
didn't like the feeling of the yamahas at all, they felt really heavy and awkward for me, so it's best to try some out somewhere and not order stuff on the internet opie

I've got an Epiphone Dot Studio which is semi-acoustic, great tone and all the guitar you need. I also prefer the finish over the expensive Dot lacquer

For $300, I'd buy a Mexi-Fender off Craigslist

I'll also recommend a mexican fender second hand. They're very good guitars.
Yamaha Pacifica, just google that shit
