No elseq thread?
Autechre ae aeg elseq
>>
I have only listened to 1 and 5. So far, what should I listen to next?
>>
>>65196629
get 2 out of the way since it's the weakest. save 4 for last imo.
>>
>>65196648
I thought 2 was the weakest too. I was wrong, and so are you.
It's the most perplexing and least emotional though.

>>65196629
I'd just go from 1 to 5 since everyone has different favorites. 3 is the best overall I think. Especially mesh cinereaL
>>
>>65196648
But 2 has the best track on it
>>
>>65196700
yes
>>
i still hold that 5 is best tbqh, just because after garbage, the end of augmatic, and treale i've always had a craving for ae's version of dub techno - and alas! thanks rob and sean for making my dreams come true xx
>>
How do you guys listen to it?
I've been taking a walk every evening this week, listening to one album at a time. It's great.

What do you guys think about pic related?
>>
>>65197934
pretty uninteresting. granted i only just skimmed through the album in about 3 seconds
>>
also I really like M62 for some reason, really serene and hypnotic song, sounds like the experience of taking opioids or heavy sedatives
>>
>>65198160
is that their only original track that's 4 on the floor? i think it is. nice juxtaposed against that bittersweet melody.
>>
>>65198193
Not sure if it's their only one, but the constant soft thud is 4/4. I think it's so successful because the melodies laid over it are quite complex and welcoming. I tend to space out on the 4/4 and not even consciously notice it. A lot of people don't seem to like it, but I find it very underrated. It's comfy as fuck
>>
>>65197917
fair enough, it is a good track though, very acidish.
Just an odd choice is all

sometimes I wish they weren't on warp desu. like I know they prob get payed well but...

>>
>>65198686
So what? You don't have to listen to it all in one sitting.
>>
>>65198686
Seriously.
>>
>>65198525
>I know they prob get payed well but...

do labels even pay advances anymore? i imagine ae can command a premier cut of sales though. maybe even more than usual this time around because warp don't really seem to have done very much - ae could have thrown this up on bandcamp, sent out a tweet or two, and maybe another watmm ama. same result imo.

>>65198545
i don't think ae would give a shit either way, but warp are made to look pretty ~plebeian~ by more chinstrokey labels like mego and RN these days.
i mean... rustie/hudmo, battles, !!!, lonelady, grizzly bear, jamie lidell and "future brown"?
i wonder if ae ever wake up some days and wonder wtf they're still doing on warp
>>
>>65198830

anyone else find Draft 7.30 kind of dreamlike? The melody in "Xylin Room" sounds like something to listen to while drifting off into clouds. It's actually one of their smoothest records, most tracks sound like a chill, comfy day in Autechre land.
>>
1 > 2 > 4 > 3 > 5
>>
>>65204933
I disagree. To me the tracks on Draft feel jammed into a space that they want to break out of, damaging themselves in the process.
>>
>>65205217
similar, but;
1 2 4 5 3

I only like mesh from 3, but I can see myself possibly liking eastre in the future.
1 is so good though, def the strongest sequence, only deep tread is skippable for me.
>>
>>65202919
good list anon
>>
Is the mastering really that bad? I'm not "audiophile" but I didn't really notice, except for the fact that it was a little loud.
>>
>>65206426
i heard it more on ae_live than i did elseq. like you said, its def loud at times but its generally fine.

i think rob and sean might have mastered these last two releases themselves and i dunno if they're super experienced in that field.

I don't know how to get familiar with this album, or Exai to be honest.

There are tracks that just fall kind of flat, and other tracks that are phenomenal.

>>
>>65211558
>>65211616

>>
>>65211616
trimming it down would take away most of the impact imo

I respect how unrelenting it is and tbqh I've wanted to know their natural inclinations for years - what would come about if they didn't edit themselves and went totally self indulgent. we got a peak of this with quadrange but those were more like alternative takes.
>>
>>65211713
I can answer that for Exai but I need to take a look in a minute.

>>
>>65213935
What the fuck?

Fermium is fucking insane. Listen to the glitchy clock spasms in the middle. I used to hate it because of the cheesy intro but listen to it a few times and you will be pleasantly surprised. Very ahead of its time in the AE catalog, only saw similar 8 years later with Exai's vekoS
>>

>>
>>65214706
I am the OG anti-Fermium poster and I straight up am a fan of "bnc castl"

Fun, good track

AE fans are too serious and don't like to giggle, they just want their music to be like "GIANT ANTSCRAPERS WITH ROBOT HEADS ON A SPACESHIFT GUIZE!"

guess, what, music has a lot more than that fellas, truss it, truss it m8s

sorry faggots but musik has a long way to go
>>
>>65214781
yah but its like the heart and soul of what Exai is...

its like the huge monolothic weird thing. one of their best moments ever imo
>>
>>65214820
bnc castl sounds like a factory
idk why it's hated or w/e
>>
>>65214781
well, it's not my favorite track but i can see how it could be that anon's favorite. it's a very well crafted track despite it's simplicity - might be one of their finest examples of spatialization in music - creating an architectural sense of space through reverb.

and it's all taste innit? what makes it "less worthy" of being a favorite track? this sort of elitism isn't a good look desu.
>>
>>65214847
nah
they'll never work with reverb better than they did on oversteps
>>
>>65214820
both ae fans and ae haters are 10x more pretentious and serious than sean and rob are about their music

my favorite moment from an interview is when they were talking about browsing the idm forum and reading the theories about confield and being all like: "we have no fuckin clue what they were going on about"
>>
>>65214997
its just hip hop innit
>>
>>65214997
every track on confield has a distinct synesthetic experience to me and when I finally decided to go full autism and do research on the title names, they all played perfectly into what visuals I get

So is this an album?

It seems like a collection of 5 eps of live performances. Is this their new album?
>>
>>65217960
it's not a live album but it was most likely "composed" thru live jamming. whether it's 5 eps or 5 albums: who knows? warp has been very vague abou it's classification (they called it "a collection" in the press release) and ae have been completely silent. the catalogue number seems to suggest an album tho.

>>65218265
I remember when Kevin Barnes wrote a hit piece on pitchfork after their false priest review was negative and had a bunch of misinformation in it. More artists should do that t b h.
>>
>>65218348
nah, i'm glad that r+s don't give a fuck. responding to reviews like that seems petty imo (unless it's just correcting misinformation). i mean, who cares really? it's hardly unexpected - this was mostly a release for hardcore fans. i only wish we got to read philip sherburne's thoughts on it as i always appreciate his insight and he's a proper bloke.
>>
>>65218422
You're right, anon. I'm just a little buttblasted. The fact that ae chose not to do any press at all about this thing is in itself a pretty clear message of their attitude towards the reception and music promotion and journalism in general.
>>
also, since elseq isn't getting a physical release i'm sorta bummed we won't get a boomkat review! they definitely have some of my fav write-ups - descriptive but succinct. they've clearly heard it tho cause they referenced it in that new m.e.s.h. review and i reckon ae being on the front page for the "classics" section is an acknowledgement.

https://boomkat.com/

i understand that it prob comes off that i care too much about reviews too much or w/e but i'm just always fascinated by how ppl respond to ae's new directions - negative and positive!

>>65218492
yeah, but i think they're also sympathetic going by that quietus interview rob did. i mean the current state of online journalism, what with fast-moving social media now a factor, dictates that writers have to get their review out as quickly as possible without having any time to get familiar with the album. plus, there were no promo copies this go around so that makes things even more difficult. of course they'll make more effort for someone like radiohead because they're radiohead and they get those page clicks. it's a total non-issue imo!

anyway, i do love this album! sorry for word salad.
>>
how do I get into quaristice
There's so many versions and shit
>>
>>65218634
quaristice -> quadrange -> (versions) -> digital exclusive ep

good luck, it's a lot of material. v rewarding tho imo.
>>
>>65218634
quaristice, version, quadrange and the digital exclusive ep is all the quaristice stuff right?
>>
>>65218663
Should I even bother with the regular album? I've heard that it's basically a rushed, chopped version of quadrange
>>
>>65218685
yeah, you should. the actual album is underrated and the short vignettes give it a very disorienting and oneiric vibe. desu i like it's set-up more than the eps for this reason, but many ppl hold the opposing opinion.
>>
>>65218616
Are you manic?
>>
>>65218728
This. What Sean said in the AAA about quaristice being a series of dreamy vignettes totally changed my perspective on it and let me see the value in it.
>>
>>65218755
no, i just get very excitted when i talk about autechre and tend to get overly verbose lol. sorry.

>>65218776
yeah, for sure! i've always felt that it flowed really well in all despite being disjointed? it's an album full of contradictions - each track is v insular and inhabits it's own distinct universe, yet it's paramount that the tracks still interact with other. there are some moments that seem underwhelming on their own, but in the broader context they all fit together so well and can't really be divorced. that's why the "make your own playlist" aspect of the quaristice era never really appealed to me, cause i feel rob and sean got it right the first time.

They only review everything in order to keep getting views. They're primarily a site for top 40 pop and hip hop. I advise you to stop reading that site immediately.

It changes constantly bruh

Also the appeal is similar to ambient music.

I think the jamminess of this album is being overstated a little imo. Sure some tracks noodle and wander around a lot, but they still seem well constructed - there are moments when events seem to occur right when they need to, like a snare hit or synth stab. That of course could be directly because of the software they're using, but maybe they just wanted to make stretched out and extended tracks this go around? Spacious tunes for people to explore and walk around in. Exai was quite dense in that regard.

I just think having AE_live and reading interviews about how they can spit out albums so fast have influenced some (some being the operative word) people perceptions. Too me it doesn't sound all that wanky...

Any people that know about sound know how that distortion sound is created at the beginning of spTh? I thought it was maybe FM synthesis with a noise wave modulator but I'm not sure.

ben frost/ae collab when?

besides by the throat and some songs on aurora and theory of machines, I can see where you're coming from though

also that second woman ep was eh, I checked out Belong too and nothing really stood out to me
>>
>>65234283
i love it too, anon. it was always one of my favorite parts of their live show and to have an extended version...wew lad. also i've said this before but it reminds me of their skeng remix and i'd love for them to do stuff in that vein more often.

>>65234353
for ae, i kind of agree. this is why i want rob and sean to adopt another pseudonym (especially since gescom is "on life support" according to sean) to do stuff that doesn't necessarily fit in with the "autechre narrative/trajectory." like they could do more dance-y stuff/remixes or collab with mc's or other experimental artists etc. plus, i don't think warp would own it.
>>
>>65229080
Agreed, people dismissing this as jam sessions doesn't do it justice IMO
>>
I really want to learn Max/MSP and make some really complex music but I feel like I'd just be copying Autechre
>>
>>65234739
do it anyways if you enjoy it
>>
>>65234739
You'll be fine, it's pretty versatile. The times I jammed around with it ended more in Alva Noto ripoffs than anything really.
>>
>>65234450
I think they would do do more side projects but updating and building their new system eats up a lot of their time nowadays. They're probably just too busy.

COLLAB WHEN???
>>
>>65196618
you now realize the cover is an abstract Pepeand that the album is ae trolling
>>
>>65236293
do you think dg are fans of ae?

not sure how a collab would work tho - ae seem pretty constrained to max atm. maybe they could sample zach's drum's or ride's vocals and run it thru their patch. but that may end up being too similar to notm.
>>
>>65236293
hopefully never
>>
Recently getting into Autechre, there is something about their music, i can't explain it in the moment i midly enjoy their works while listening but there is something that keeps me coming back to them.

>>
>>65237552
It's great imo. Very complex melodically. Think about how polyrhythm and off-kilter their beats are but apply that to melody. Spatially its impressive- fantastic use of reverb. At first it's seems too "pretty" on the surface level but further listens reveal a lot of depth.
>>
>>65237618
I like how that sounds. I will keep going chronollogically then :D
>>
>>65237552
oversteps is my favorite. if you loved quaristice you will also love it (I know the same statement held the other way for me). oversteps is like a return to their early work but not, since it's not at all cheesy like incanabula can sometimes be. it reminds me of opn before opn (although i'm sure many of you will disagree with that assessment). they both play with their melodies and fiddle with how they're arranged

i'm taking it slow with how i go through ae's discog. over the past two years ive only listened to like 10 of their albums/eps. they're like the ultimate grower artist, so i'm surprised you're just diving straight in, but hey, if you're loving it, keep going

Most car radios can be replaced, it usually involves removing part of the dash but it's really not difficult. It can give you an audio quality boost without having to get new speakers, definitely recommend.

You can get a descent radio for ~$75 and a wiring harness & mount for ~$30. Some places can install it for you, no idea how much they charge for that. There are plenty of tuts online so you could do it yourself if you have a few tools.
