This kinda sounds retarded but he rise of ""meme culture"" is probably to blame. Things don't organically pop up and last anymore; a shitty joke is posted here, then 4 hours later it's reposted on twitter, /r/4chan, and tumblr with 12,000 retweets/notes/upboats and an article on kym. Jokes are run into the ground as soon as they come up.
