Americans have some sort of problems with people looking like metalheads. I'm from Finland myself and here I can wear pic related on public and nobody gives a shit. However, when I was visiting Freedomland around two years ago and was wearing my De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas t-shirt, I felt like everyone was watching me on the subway. I definitely got some judgemental looks from strangers. Maybe USA is so full of sheeple that they can't stand it when someone doesn't wear "mainstream" clothes, or maybe they're just so religious that they thought I was some hardcore satanist and apparently that was an issue. Who knows?

When I studied in America, I too had long hair and a viking beard, also wearing metal shirts. People thought it a novelty and that we all dressed like this. However, Americans who tried to pull over metal looks were autistic lardasses wearing Metallica, Pantera and Ozzy shirts. They were also vehemently opposed to anything not metal. At least I talked to MILFs about Gretta Garbo and ABBA and also talked to 19 year old sluts about Jennifer Lawerence and Adele. You can still be metal as fuck, but you can't live under a rock and dismiss everything. Why does the "scene/hardcore/xcore" crowd still have cultural relevancy? Not on a huge scale, but it seems that there is all these bands popping up making awful music that no one cares about (on a large scale) and they just keep cropping up. I'm talking brocore all breakdowns, wimpy acoustic whine fest stuff, and generally poppy metal appropriation. People still think it's "cool", but only a select few. Why? I saw some local band with decent musicians but atrocious songwriting and a very poppy take on metal posting live shows with like 4 people in the crowd. Why is it that this type of music is so huge yet so minuscule at the same time?

There's still a pretty large metacore/etc scene out there. It just largely doesn't overlap with the metal one much anymore.
Small local bands, without a bigger name up top to bring the crowd, often play to tiny crowds regardless of the genre. Especially if they're bad at promotion - this sometimes even screws much larger acts. I've seen Grave play an international show to like twenty people.
