Why were the 1960's so based and will it ever happen again in popular music?

Studio fuckery was just getting big so people went crazy with it, also drugs. Lots and lots of drugs

You dummy.

'60s were the beginning of the modern era of music. Huge money could be made there. The competition was smaller. Amplifier/guitar technology became just good enough to make stadium concerts. Tons of good ideas were on the surface. It was new, fresh, it was part of the zeitgeist.

No wonder so many great musicians happened at that time. It was later that appearance started playing much bigger role in music, there were thousands upon thousands of bands on the market, and record labels realized progressive music != good sales.

To add to this.

For comparison, take the '80s. The market had changed significantly. Labels lost interest in prog rock. MTV has spawned acts relying heavily on image, like glam metal, and so on. The progressive music didn't sell as well, but still the record sales were at all time high. So many musical ideas from that time came from underground acts, like the punk scene, and people with enough cred to survive making progressive music (Eno).

Take 2010s. Record sales are at all time low. Streaming meme is the last of hope of recording industry which shrunk ~3 times since the 1990s. Labels won't spend money on production and bands' cocaine. The last resort of music is tracks made on laptops with minimal expenses. Pop music is completely dominated by singers-models. Album is dead, rock is dead.

Which times? That's pretty interesting that you can narrow it down to just 3 events.
