First Act ME4018

This guitar is oddly rare btw. I've only found one of these with two pickups online, and I've never seen one in pink besides this. As far as I know they're the only ones with the headstock pictured.

With the work I've put into it it plays like a dream... if it weren't for the neck whip. For a while I was thinking of putting a jaguar scale and radius neck on it, but I have a desire to downsize to one electric guitar, and the tele wins. I'll probably sell it or give it away. Fun project though.

Pic is stock. Honestly I don't think I improved the looks with all the black, but oh well. It looks a lot more generic now, but less like a children's guitar.

Depends on where you live, how much it costs to ship it to your place and import tax and stuff.

I played one before, and I felt that they were pretty different from your American or Mexican strats. The neck is thicker, frets smaller and rounder fretboard. I didn't have time to take note of build quality but I was generally pleased with how they play.

>>
>>65173836
Hmm, yeah, I think it could look ugly. I think it might help that the one I'm putting in is cream and black. That should reinforce the color scheme, and give it an interesting look with alternating black/cream coils. Well anyways, I want the tone of an anlico II humbucker without buying a les paul. Hah, I could always put it under the pickguard. That'll mess with people pretty hard.
>>

The best value for your money as a beginner will be a cheaper guitar and a professional fret leveling + setup. The key is to get a guitar with a sturdy neck. Some guitars have "neck whip" like this: https://youtu.be/g8o5wv1Y69I

You can worry about tone when your ears improve.

I have this 25.3" scale acoustic guitar with .13 Tony Rice monel strings tuned to E standard. My fingers hurt and barre chords buzz, just like it was when I first started playing. Will my fingers get stronger and used to it or should I just go back to my comfort zone by detuning it and to eventually switch back to lighter gauge strings?

Get a set of 12s or even 11s, there's no point punishing yourself - yes your fingers will get stronger eventually, but don't injure yourself trying to get there too fast.

Depending on the guitar, too much tension may even choke the sound of the instrument.

I use 11s on my Martin and it sounds just fine, although I use it almost exclusively for fingerstyle.

I have 12s on my Ovation which needs a little extra tension to make it work properly.

>>
>>65174266
don't do that, the guitar is just going to feel weird. you will have to reverse the nut because the small nut string slots won't fit the lower strings, and if you want to stand up and play with a strap you will have to drill a strap button hole on the other fin of the body, you won't be able to use the regular one, i guess you could tie the strap around the neck and go full acoustic mode but that looks literally retarded

don't bother. i'm sure there's someone out there making jimi hendrix right handed guitars that are more comfortable than just buying a left handed guitar and flipping it around.

thats a les paul recording guitar

les paul designed it to be used in the studio to deal with studio problem shit, it had some funky EQ shaping abilities and was super low noise, I think theres a transformer in it or some shit to drive the super low output pickups so it wouldn't distort the front end of an amp, stereo output

The thing about acoustics is when they were down they warp faster, and the bridge lifts faster. When your bridge lifts, at some point the guitar will become useless.

Don't listen to that guy (>>65177765) either. SGs are prone to having tuning issues (it's called neck whip) because of their neck joint location. Gibson is notorious for using rubbery mahogany for necks and it effects the SG model the worst because of the way the neck is set at the 19th fret.

If you can find one that stays in tune, you're good. The ones that actually stay in tune are hard to come by though.

Alright let's hope I'm not too confusing, the image is seen as if you were looking at your strings from the bridge.
I also keep my thumb always on the back of the neck, and use my right hand's palm to mute the top strings.
It's also worth noting that absolutely nothing on this diagram is to scale, and you don't need your fingers to be red or purple.
>>
>>65179055
Neck whip means it goes out of tune when you apply normal pressure to the neck. You fret a couple of chords (for example) and it's out of tune. Most people don't seem to be able to tell when they're out of tune anyway, you might fall into that category.

You're on the right track wanting an LP. It's got humbuckers those give the heavy tone you're talking about. Les Pauls aren't the only guitars with humbuckers though. I usually recommend for beginners to get a guitar with more than one of the basic pickup types(humbucker, single coil, p90) in it. In your case, I recommend getting one with a humbucker in the bridge position.

The les paul specifically is a heavy guitar with lots of sustain. It's also a shorter scale. These factors make it good for lead playing, but maybe a bit less suited for rhythm playing.

The main factor when choosing a body type of your first guitar should be what you like the look of, so I can't really recommend against the les paul. However, if you were to put looks aside, I would recommend a lighter guitar, that has more than one pickup type. Les pauls are almost always two humbucker guitars. If you're handy, you can swap out the neck pickup for something else, though. They're fine guitars, possibly not the absolute best for a beginner though. Like I said, I can't strongly recommend against them, these factors aren't anything that'll hold you back much.

When you buy your first guitar, I recommend buying a cheap one. You don't want your guitar to make you feel guilty about not practicing enough or not being good enough. It can easily suck the enjoyment out of guitar for a beginner.

What cheap means to you is going to be different than other people, that's fine. Buy a cheap one by your own standards.

Also, avoid tremolos. A beginner will have a much better time with what's called a "hard tail". That means there's no whammy bar.

Now, I love cheap guitars. I like working on and modding guitars. I'd be happy to recommend stuff, but the general look and configuration of the guitar should be decided by you. It's tougher for a beginner to choose something on the basis of tone, but if you can get a categorical idea that can help you make a decision.
>>
>>65179264
It's not exactly the same thing. Neck whip is a vibrato effect caused by pressure on the neck, but it's not only caused by thin necks. It can also be caused by a very thin neck pocket. A thinner neck requires more adjustment for temperature than a thicker one. Some people just get used to this.
>>
>>65179264
It means the neck isn't stiff enough to function properly. Gibson could remedy the problem by using quartersawn Mahogany (or maple) for their SG necks.
>>65179450
>vibrato effect
That's not what it is. Vibrato would mean it would return to the original note after going out of tune, bad SGs definitely don't do that.
>>
>>65179339
Thanks for the advice!
This guitar would be my second one, and I'm planning on it to be an SG. I played some single coil guitars friends have but I generally like a humbucker more.
LPs are pretty nice I think but I wouldn't be able to play with it a lot because of my back problems, an SG would be less painful to carry around.

Who knows I might mod it a little bit at some point in the future, and I'll come here for advice!
>>
>>65179588
Vibrato is the best way I can describe it. It does not necessarily cause the guitar to go out of tune, same as a whammy bar does not necessarily cause it to go out of tune. The reason it goes out of tune is that the strings end up moving back and forth over the nut, and depending on your bridge design, the saddles. If neck whip causes your guitar to go out of tune, the nut may require attention, and less likely the tuners.

Lube is often enough, otherwise slot work is necessary. In general 3+3 headstocks need more care to get the nut right.

>>65179830
SGs are still solid mahogany. If you can find something basswood that doesn't offend you I'd go with that. Anyways, mahogany is pretty much the heaviest body wood. Keep that in mind, and go buy a neotech strap. Sucks to have back pain.
>>
>>65179866
Or... you could avoid that kind of frustrating shit altogether and stay away from an SG. That would be my advice at least.

And it works! I basically have a normal "overdrive" sound from my fuzz, this thing is more versatile than I had thought.

Try pulling upwards on the string so they lift just slightly off the bridge saddles, then tune up again and see if the problem persists. Also, post a close up of your bridge, including the stop bar. I didn't think grover made bad tuners, but considering their popularity I wouldn't be that surprised if they had lower end versions.

What strings are you using? How old? Might as well post a pic of your headstock while you're at it, I might notice something.

its better to wrap the treble strings like that and leave the bass strings normally strung

The tension over the saddles doesn't change the tension between the bridge and the saddle. I'm not sure what you mean by "farted out" but if you're saying the sound is different you're wrong.

you can add some tube screamers especially the older models to beef up your tube amp if you do get one

i'll also suggest picking up Black Arts Toneworks Quantum Mystic the guitarist from YOB had a hand in developing the tone… Matt Pike has Destroyer and Oath pedals check out their site anon
http://www.blackartstoneworks.com

you'll need loads of fuzz pedals and you can't go wrong with a Big Muff wink wink nudge nudge hear the Russians ones might be more suited for the sound you're looking for and after that you can start adding other fuzz pedals like Earthbound Audio Supercollider Fuzz or Black Cat Pedal Super Fuzz it's up to you

a Pro Co Rat for distortion (the old ones have the LM308 chip which is sweet) and a Analog Man Beano Boost (which happens to be modeled after Tony Iommi's modified Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster)

if you want that Orange EQ without buying an actual Orange amp you can get the Orange Bax Bangeetar and if yo want that Sunn sound a EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold could boost that guitar

slap a Boss OC-2 Super Octave and some sort of compression pedal or rig box and you'll do wonders Matt has used MXR Custom Compressor if you were curious

They are. It was perfect until I started messing around with the factory setup. It's a beautiful guitar. Definitely would recommend it, but try before you buy

playing with a ~300$ yamaha 120H strat for some years now and this thing is amazing. The ergonomic shape of a Strat is about as comfy as it can be. I also like the thin untreated neck, H-H, coil split etc. on the yamaha. I suck though

I still bust a nut I just save it for later. Sex drive and motivation are very related man, but I'm not opposed to the idea that it affects people differently.
