Smooth jazz is vastly misunderstood and gets a very bad name due to it's use for TV soundtracks and as elevator music, but some of it actually was a reaction to jazz becoming more and more experimental and disattached to the listener who could not involve himself into the technicality of the music. so some musicians decided to go the opposite route and focus more on creating an immersive experience any listener could get into, which opened to floodgate to bland, easy-listening music.
