I used to think like this OP, I can't tell you don't exercise frequently. Just hear what you like and do the activity, it will work out. I lift and listen to James Blake's Lindisfarne I & II exclusively for two weeks now.

actually you should make a playlist of things (preferably that you don't listen to otherwise) and then only ever listen to that. after a few weeks, every time you hear it, your brain will prepare for a workout and you will be more efficient

To run a little over a mile, I just use the one song A Night on the Town by The Dear Hunter. I full on sprint towards the end. But I don't think it would have the same effect on other people.
