Bring your levels WAY UP dude. It's possible to be quiet and comfy while simultaneously being audible. Oh, and kill the strings they wouldn't fit even if they were well executed. I'm hearing either a single-note meddling fiddle or some slow woodwinds resonating in the background. You have a good start, now it's time to really go to work.

>>65132195
Needs about 4 more layers and a melody until it's actually interesting. Right now it's pretty naked composure-wise. Not a bad attempt at FH, it's just intolerable after about 20 seconds due to redundancy.

>>65132853
I can see what style you're shooting for, however you failed at it by being predictable and familiar texturally. You're so desperately trying to be unique yet sadly shot way under the mark. You'll get there one day, just keep experimenting.
>>
>>65134072
You can choose them randomly tho. Scroll to a random bit, copy paste everythin in a word processor and pick a random page, pick the one that matches your last digits on your 4chan post, etc

Scrolling to a random bit excludes the first and the last genres of the page ,with wrod processor it would take way too much time,no idea how the 4chan would work and i dont want to shit the thread.

How do bitcrush/sample rate reduction algorithms work?

I just got an OT last Tuesday and the "lo-fi" effect absolutely dominates abletons redux. On redux the sample rate reduction just seems to add some grain + high frequencies, the OT one is like an aliased digital distortion. The bitcrusher is way better too. The ableton version just adds noise or makes the sound unusable, but the OT one is kinda like a really hard leveler.
>>
>>65140370
it's a decent run of the mill mini keyboard, i dont get why people are always asking questions about them on here... there's not a lot to know

Octatrack. It's an 8 track sampler/sequencer.
>>
Sup /prod/,

Made some meme music today, how'd I do?

https://clyp.it/wacgzjg0
>>
>>65140735

to compare it to a digital image,

sample rate reduction is like making an image pixelated, lowering the resolution

bit rate reduction is like lowering the color depth (if you remember 256 color and before that, 16 color and then even monochrome)

but there are different algorithms that do a combination of the two, or combine with some kind of distortion or waveshaping, etc.
>>
>>65141110

I'd add to this that sample rate reduction is usually a product of resampling of the original pitch at the reduced sample rate, while strict sample rate reduction (ie, playing the original pitch back at a reduced sample rate) results in a reduction in pitch too - it's how a lot of crude tape emulations do their wow and flutter thing.

>>65137799
Dude you're so close musically. Unfortunately there's a lot of melodic dissonance going on resulting in the whole piece sounding very cluttered. Focus on one of these segments (about 8 bars) and expand on it. The mix is horrid, but that will come in due time. For now, I'd worry about songwriting. An instrument track is like hot sauce, a little can go a long way.

>>
>>65145924
Its not that there isnt enough bass, it seems like theres too much chaotic. I think if you cleaned up the low end on some of the sounds it would be much clearer. Then again, all depends on how you want it to sound.
>>
>>65145892
wow it's bad.

lower those highs, grating

no good low end, add bass

pan stuff, stereo widen.
>>
>>65145892
It's very easy to fool yourself into thinking that what you done with with eq, compression, panning, volume, reverb etc. is a positive change because it is a change

make sure whenever you apply any of these things you bypass the effect and listen to both until you are sure it is a good change

make sure also to listen to tracks in and out of a full mix - for instance a certain eq may sound horrendously tinny and unpleasant when you listen to the single track it is applied to, but when it sits in the full mix it will not be unpleasant and will help that element cut through

probably the most obvious thing many people new producers fuck up is they don't eliminate unnecessary bass frequencies on tracks which need no bass presence - this inevitably creates a muddy, indecipherable mix

but the biggest key to hearing the mix fresh again is just to take time away and come back with fresh ears - good mixes take time, keep at it

Prediction does not equal bad. And I doubt that's true, and even if it is, I could say the same about a lot of boards of Canada songs. They do a lot of the same shit over and over and yet it's good, because of the soundscaping and modulation.

Anyways, who cares, it's a demo. Again, I just wish people would stop posting utter shit that's not worth even criticism.

>>
>>65146018
listening back to the highs, you're right gotta lower em.
Idk about the bass dude, I feel like its already pretty thick. I think the stereo field sounds fine, unless I'm grossly overlooking something.
>>
>>65146495
Not that guy but your bass is almost non existent on my monitors. I mean it's there but it's pingy. Add a proper lower mid, like an actual bass progression. 4th is a good place for that
>>
>>65146515
Hmm ok gotta do some fixing then. Its weird cause I really only have 1 synth in the low end to give the song a thick foundation, with the main pad also hanging a bit into the low mids.
>>
>>65144347
I have the Monotron delay. I fucking love the dirty sound of that thing and use it a lot for sending synths and drums through it. It's really gritty sounding so if that's your thing then I'd highly recommend it.

You suffer from what most people here suffer from. Lack of a definite rhythm. It's not bad but you def want a concrete rhythm first and then go off it in spurts.

Also, boost it up an octave for a nicer timbre. I find 3 and 4 are the best. 2 makes it too quite and grungy.
>>
>>65144062
it's cool, you dropped the drums differently than I expected. I would have mixed the drums differently but that's your expression. Well produced. Good stuff.
>>
>>65147118
There are no drums in that track. It's percussive elements. I am gonna add some drum beat later though. I'm going for mellow field recording stuff, hence the perc ellements and water droplets reversed.

Ty
>>
>>65147029
3 or 4 really? Idk I like 2, its think and feels very deep, which is the sound I like to go for. Interestingly enough I think Logic's octving system places things 1 below what they should be.
Also, you didnt think it was groovin haha damn this track is supposed to be an evolving dance track. Idk i think the groove in the middle section during and after the synth solo are pretty hopin.
>>
>>65147191
I meant the bass rhythm. If you're here tmrw I can show you a bass rhythm that's simple but works.

Hint, use gross beat.
>>

Anything else? I feel like I need another instrument to cut through all the slog. Then again it's meant to be a hip-hop beat so maybe it's ok.
>>
>>65147396
maybe, that's really your decision. It's a lot about your own creative decisions here. Like personally, I wouldn't have put that snap on the AND, and probably just had it on the twos and fours. It's a little swingy which is cool, and it sounds like you're pretty new to this stuff. The melody was okay, the synth sound was ehhh. It sounded like a default FL studio plugin, maybe that Wasp XT or whatever it's called? You can make these sounds interesting, but in this song you just were kind of straightforward. Keep on trying, maybe add a kick in there and a more driving rhythm. It sounds like a beat that is starting to go somewhere but never does. This is all feedback and I hope it doesn't discourage you from making more music, because this is what it's about; trial and error. Keep pushing yourself to be better and you will be

separate the sounds, mix each into its own unique position in the stereo field. Cut the highs on sounds you want to hang in the background so one or two are the focus of the track. Add some light overdrive to enhance the harmonics in each track. I would also recommend mixing binaurally if you could. Radiohead's music (especially the most recent few records) are the perfect example of this sound. It would be a creative choice though so it's up to you.
>>
>>65147592
Most stuff here does have some sort of bit crushing going on. It's a secret I learned to add harmonics when I made pop music. As for the stereo field, it all is very panned out and sitting on its own, so idk about that.

I already have added more bass notes (again old demo) tho.

If you're shooting for background game music you fuckin nailed it. This is industry-tier imo. I would not be surprised to hear this on some sidescroller's cloud level. Dick-sucking aside, if I'm expected to intently listen to this as a "song," you definitely need more stuff going on, or else you'll lose attention. The mix is perfect for this style, I wouldn't change much of anything in that regards.

I'm sorry that I haven't fulfilled your ideal expectations as an anonymous online critic.

I obviously left "need more stuff" open for interpretation since I have no fucking clue what direction you want to take the track. If it's background music, leave it be; it's great! If this is going on an album, add things (triggered yet?).

I dig the bassline and the rhythms going on, BUT I kept waiting for it to break into some heavy kick and snare! The compression on this makes me feel like I'm on a roller coaster, just bobbing up and down.

The biggest thing for me is the drum beat, it's kinda like that lounge/house beat don't take this the wrong way but sounds a little generic, for this style what really grabs my attention is adding little funky breaks in the beats, it's kinda like OH SHIT they put some badass breaks in there. Any advice on recording guitar? I plug into an audio interface and then into Ableton, using VSTs in there and Guitar Rig, etc. I'm more so wondering about recording, the stereo field, etc. I know each case is different, but just in general...

Let's say I have a rhythm guitar line and lead melody (or two). Am I good to just record those each once? Or is it better to, for the rhythm, record two different takes and put them on top of each other (each panned to a different side - or one track processed a bit differently than the first)? Also if I should do this double-tracking (idk what it's called), should I also be doing the same for the lead guitar lines/melodies? Or should I just do that if I really want those melodies to be the focus of the track?

Also the same question goes for synths and what not. If I have a prominent synth rhythm in a song, should I just record one instance of it and process it to my liking? Or should I do two takes and pan them left and right? I'm pretty oblivious to how to make things sound fleshed out, utilize the stereo field, etc. I just kind of think of making music as putting together each separate sound. I know, generally, to keep the bass in the middle/mono. But up into the mid and high frequencies, I'm wondering if I should be doing more than just recording one instance of something. Not sure how many things I should be panning. If I have a lead synth part, not sure if that should sit in the middle, or take up a wide stereo range.
>>
because everyone deserves a (you)

>>65130792
the lead synth is mixed terribly, takes up all the space in the mix. I don't mind the arps, but it's not very inspired.
>>65131298
I like it a lot, but the samples need to be a lot clearer (could be the compressed audio though), and you need to utilise 3d sound a LOT for it to stay interesting. Nice start though
>>65131606
